Depends on the server, there isn't a ladder system, but there is a personal pvp ranking system.
It's pay2play, and pay for mounts that move at the same speed as free mounts, glamours, and old event costumes.
Endgame is a 4 part hardcore raid, and a new 8man trial of some sort every 3 months.
8man trials are basically just boss fights.

Gladiator(Paladin) and Marauder(Warrior). In Heavensward there's also Dark Knight.
Its a decent game, the only bad thing is it doesnt try anythign super unique so if you like MMOs in general its a safe bet. The content will keep you going for a while + expansion.

GLD/PLD is based on heavy mitigation: you'll be taking 0 damage when other tanks are mashing cooldowns, and rattling off blocks with your shield left and right while keeping the boss debuffed with the only on-demand GCD stun in the game. Lategame they get ally shield and heals.
MRD/WAR ends up being a DPS/TNK hybrid where if they dont actually have to tank they end up dishing out huge amounts of damage, and when they are tanking they deal less damage and are a bit shaky on cooldowns but can keep the boss debuffed permanently to help out everyone else. Also super strong aoe damage/hate.

The only things there that would place you behind if you didn't do them are Scrips and CT weekly if that means capped Tomestone weekly. PVP I guess if you're into that thing. If you're at end-game the only thing to focus on is raising your ilvl, which is done with getting the Lore gear and running Weeping City once a week along with Void ark Once a week for the penny and farthing to upgrade the lore gear.
You make it sound like there's a constant grind and it's awful, but you can literally get everything you need to stay caught up by either grinding it out in a day once a week or at a pleasant pace throughout the week.
Diadem is dead and serves no purpose. weekly challenges serve no purpose outside of leveling. Aquapolis is just a fun side dungeon that drops what used to be super fucking expensive to craft/buy loot. How is Triple Triad a grinding thing in any way? Or Chocobo Racing for that matter?

The awful thing is that the fatsest way to farm for it before, Gordias, is no longer relevant content so it's almost impossible to farm out.
I'm praying that Deep Dugeon gives a way to g the 20/20/20/20 items because it's an even worse grind then when out now, especially since you can't waste Eso on the unidentifiable things now that the 240 step is an even worse Eso grind.

Aurum Vale is still part of a quest line, if not even main story. Palace is one quest to open then running it. It does ot require neither will it tie to any other questline besides references. It's as optional as Diadem.

I tried to get into ff14, but the MSQ was one of the worse gaming experiences of my life. It was fucking awful, running endless "go talk to this guy" quests over and over and over, pressing two buttons because it seems like the combat is garbage until you reach the later levels.
Its a shame, because the endgame looks alright, I just couldn't deal the dullest mmo 1-50 or whatever of all time.

The only difference is in Aurum Vale you get people who are doing their leveling roulette to fill in spots. But because Deep Dungeon has no class restrictions, even if the queue is full of DPS for Deep Dungeon, you will still get a pop.
