What do we think of the Steamboy / Smach Zero at this point in time?
Can handheld Steam gaming take off? Are you interested? Are you disinterested?
>>
>>344634182
This thing's real?
>>
>>344634182
My own concerns.

Does crossplay between Windows and SteamOS versions of games work? Are the games still able to share save files etc through the cloud?
Can you make it run non-Steam games through Steam and take them on the go, like games from GoG or whatever?
It can take USB, but what about keyboard and mouse? And can you plug in gamepads of your own? And what about gamepads without official drivers such as DS3s?
>>
>>344634182
Who is that thing for?
>>
>>344634395
Why wouldn't crossplay work? A windows and nix version of the game still connect to the same servers.
>>
>portable steamos
mite b cool
compatibility might be the real sticking point, but itd be nice to play stuff on the go

Now that I think of it, the console running on SteamOS would be fantastic. It already has a wide array of games and would give incentive to develop games for Linux.
>>
>>344635513
>and would give incentive to develop games for Linux.
Hopefully. But you're right, this alone leaves me with enough to wish for its success.

This is pure san francisco sjw lunacy that believes ARM cpus can handle x86 games.

>Does crossplay between Windows and SteamOS versions of games work?
Yes.
>Are the games still able to share save files etc through the cloud?
Yes.
>Can you make it run non-Steam games through Steam and take them on the go, like games from GoG or whatever?
Only if they're made to run on Linux. No Windows games will be playable on this device.
>It can take USB, but what about keyboard and mouse?
It will detect KB and Mouse as such, but it beats the purpose of being a handheld mobile device.
>And can you plug in gamepads of your own?
Again: why would you do that?
>And what about gamepads without official drivers such as DS3s?
No drivers, no game. Again: why would you do that?

t. someone who actually has a DIY steambox at home and experiments a lot with the SteamOS.

the vita would be an excellent handheld if it had steam support

search you're feelings, you know it to be true
>>
>>344636672
As I am travelling quite often by plane for work (3+ hours flights) the Vita and my N3DS were the best purchases.
>>
>>344636269
what is that cement daemon?
>>
>>344636506
It would be neat if you could plug in your own controllers if you would like to play fighting games or something when off to a tournament. It would be a whole lot easier to take with you than a laptop or a whole desktop/console.
Then again, I don't really know of any interesting linux compatible fighting games. But it's still an example.
>>
>>344636734
same here. the vita is really nice if you can appreciate dungeon rpgs and actually use it on the go.
>>
>>344636919
Yeah but... your controller would most likely be larger than the screen you're playing your game on. Not sure if that would be an enjoyable experience at all.
>>
>>344636398
Why not just make an x86 handheld? Aren't CPUs small nowadays anyways?
>>
>>344634182
I am interested in the concept but is that thing an actual project? How about the specs? Price? Release date?
>>
>>344637007
I'd be willing to take that just for the added level of portability.
If I could hook it up with HDMIs to an even larger monitor as well then that would be swell. Then it could double as a really tiny little computer that I could just hook everything else up to.
While still being able to play it on the train without having anything hooked up to it.

Probably the motherboard that holds it being too big.

As opposed to SteamOS?
>>
>>344637646
SteamOS isn't that hot at the moment. But SteamOS has potential. Windows 10 is just disgusting.
Still Windows though. So it's not that terrible. Hopefully you can wipe it and install Windows 7 or something on it.
>>
>>344637857
you can install linux if you want.
>>
Will these next gen handheld computers finally kill mobile phone gaming?
>>
I know Wine is far from perfect. But can SteamOS run Wine?
>>
>>344638269
No, phone games can never be killed as long as people still use phones.
>>
>>344634182
>What do we think of the Steamboy / Smach Zero at this point in time?

It's never coming out. The devs have gone silent on it since November.
>>
>>344638395
But if "phones" can run real games, there would be no need for super crappy shit games would there?

>Does crossplay between Windows and SteamOS versions of games work?
Typically it works, there are a few games where it hasn't been enabled yet due to the SteamOS version trailing behind the Windows version, or just due to poor planning by the developer relying on Windows-only stuff that means that MacOS and Linux players can only play against each other. This is more common for pre-release betas though like Arma3 which is still not fully released.

>Are the games still able to share save files etc through the cloud?
Yeah, they can. Its a feature of Steam itself.

>Can you make it run non-Steam games through Steam and take them on the go, like games from GoG or whatever?
Yes, SteamOS is an open platform able to run Linux software from any source with access to the Debian software repositories. You'd just need to add the third party software in like you would on desktop Steam because it IS desktop Steam.

The other questions all seem to be hardware specific and last I knew they had gone back to the drawing board waiting for next-generation SOC hardware that would actually be able to run games. Only AMD can provide one, and AMD hardware for gaming on Linux is only just starting to really be viable thanks to their new open source initiative.

The Pyra is even better
>>
>>344640659
The Pyra is neat, but unfortunately Linux now has the same problem that Windows does in that most games are tied to x86. So the Pyra will be a cool little emulator machine but its library of native games will be kind of limited.

Also what's the graphics hardware in it like? Is its driver open source? Will it have Vulkan support?
>>
>>344640893
No, it's a PowerVR, so by default it's shit unless they use a fuck old linux but apparently they have some guy from TI and another from Imagination helping them keep the driver working with newer stuff.

*raises hand* actual indie dev here, this thing costs too much and is looking to be the GameGear of the portable market, Big Bulky Battery Eating Behemoth.
>>
>>344641426
That's why they put it on hold, to wait for hardware to get better, but portable gaming PCs in this kind of handheld form factor aren't that far from reality.

They haven't happened yet because Intel can't make a GPU to save their lives, Intel+Nvidia is too big, power hungry and expensive to be viable, and AMD's hardware has been stuck on older and more power hungry processes.

Once you have a low power 14nm Zen/Vega SOC this sort of thing might actually work.
>>
So what are some good steamos compatible games?
>>
>>344634182
gonna bet the game will be going to be digital only
100% pass
>>
>>344634182
I'm an adult. So I have no interest in such a thing.
>mobile gaming already controlled by the cellphone market
Ok, Gaben. It's time to know when to fold'em.
>>
>>344642617
There's about 2500 games total now, so its kind of hard to list all the good ones.

Just during the last Steam sale I picked up Tomb Raider (2013), Payday 2, Alien Isolation, Prison Architect, Stellaris, and Shovel Knight if that gives you some idea of the game availability.
>>
The main draw of PC for me is that I can do everything I want on a single machine. I'm not going to buy supplementary gizmos for it.
>>
Im interested in this console if it can emulate everything up to PS2/GC fine, if it can it will be my favourite handled ever

Also playing some games on it must be neat like Dark Souls or GTA IV if it can run them properly

Any info of when will it release other than in 2016?
>>
Dunno what the point is. You need EXCLUSIVE games to draw people in with.

Then again this isn't valve endorsed
>>
>>344645534
If the console can manage it, imagine playing Dark Souls, GTA IV, Metal Gear Rising plus other games on a handled whenever you want plus tons of emulators
>>
>>344644417
Personally the idea of already being able to put my already massive library of games on it sounds very appealing to me. Just too bad that it might take a while before the technology is really there.
>>
>>344645534
Civilization is PC exclusive.
Co-op games like Battleblock Theatre and whatnot will also be considerably more fun if you can easily take your game with you to a friend and play in person.
>>
>>344646286
>>344645624

That's not my point. Have you seen the specs on this shit? 4gb ram and a fucking literally what amd card with a jaguar cpu. You're not running shit well on this at all. Unless you make specific handheld games. Now if Nintendo had this as their new handheld I'd be impressed. Because they make games geared towards the handheld format. But valve does not make games at all let alone handheld one's.
>>
>>344646378
It could run games like Valdis Story and Fortune Summoners just fine.
