Lawsuits in short. They were sued by TV Tokyo for around 4 mill before they started dubbing the very last season. 4Kids eventually had to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy all because they were supposedly collecting royalties without actually paying the royalties to keep the license. Funimation pretty much said "yeah fuck that let them burn"
It happened again in 2012 and I believe that's why the last season of 5Ds was never dubbed. They had to shut down the UK version of 4Kids and shill out 1 mill to Pokemon over some agreement. From there I believe they merged with Konami to become 4K Media so they never got around to dubbing the last season and went straight onto Zexal and are now working on Arc-V (supposedly).

Just think about that pair duel episode and how he suddenly didn't even have fun with duels anymore. That was the entire point of his duel at the end with Yugi. To get the fun back to dueling.
So yeah. At the end of the series he was finally an okay character. He could have fun with duels without taking them too lightly if lives were on the line or taking them too seriously if they weren't. But we never saw that. The moment he became tolerable the show ended.

Why can't they just make a realistic season of YGO? It's not like the actual card game is boring. Streams getting thousands of viewers prove this.
