I always wanted to try this game but it was way too overpriced to me. I looked into the F2P version and apparently previous owners get all the monsters, hunters, and exclusive items. I played the game a shitload and not only did it suffer from balance problems, where they broke the game in half every single time they tried to update it, but also because of how little content their was for the price tag.
There's no way to deny that a $30 - $60 buy in plus the $30 for the two season passes that doubled the content in the game because it was so skimpy on release, wasn't daunting to players as the game moved forward from release.
It enjoyed a longer lifespan on consoles because they were starved for games, especially on Xbone.

Look, Evolve is an asymmetrical, competitive, online multiplayer FPS. It requires lots of meta knowledge, good twitch/aim skills, and on Hunter side a large amount of coordination and teamwork.
It's not a game that appeals to a general audience. The kind of game that appeals to a general audience is Call of Duty. This is the kind of game that appeals to a dedicated niche crowd, and the model they're using does NOT fit that crowd. It fits a general audience.
Not only that, the crowd it does appeal to abandoned it because they demand balance at a high level and either 2K or TRS was more interested in pub balance.
Personally I quit when they said they were keeping the Kraken flight bug (Aftershock and Lightning Strike were intended to slow Kraken while he used them. In an update they changed Kraken's reaction to tranquilizers to make him fall instead of get slowed, but they programmed this in a lazy way that stopped ALL slow effects in the air instead of just ones applied by tranqs, so the slow while using lightning strike and aftershock no longer applied) because despite being the 100% pick in competitive play and absolutely dominating with ease at a high level its pub win rate was still reasonably close to 50.
