It's similar to Ingress, in which you can pay real money for more poke balls, incense to attract more Pokémon, eggs, and other shit. However, if you walk around and travel to enough pokestops, you really don't need to spend any money.
Never paid a cent on Ingress so I don't see myself doing that here. Plus, you get more Pikeville every time you level up.

As someone who has played this game in beta, I assure you that every pokemon you catch in early game is a trashmon with garbage CP.
You don't get to the good shit until you're at least trainer level 5. Also, before you mention it, strengthening your mons is a waste of time unless it is:
1) The final evolution in the line
2) A mon that is rare or hard to find
Otherwise you will just catch better versions of that pokemon naturally as you level up and you would be wasting your candy and dust.

CP of caught pokemon increases with trainer level at a rate of roughly 100 CPxtrainer level, though occasionally you will encounter a pokemon that is up to 100CP or so stronger than this, those are the good ones.
The ideal pokemon is a pokemon with high CP and good moves. However since moves can not be changed they are more important. The fast move is more important than the charge move as it gets used more often.
Use Pokeballs for EVERY pokemon other than those rare high strength ones or pokemon that you have not caught yet. This rule only applies at later levels, at early levels use pokeballs for everything. Only use Ultra Balls on truly strong, hard to catch and rare pokemon as they are very, very rare compared to great balls and pokeballs.
If you want to farm pokestops for items go to a university, they tend to have a ton of them from people marking off every little statue, plaque and monument as a cultural landmark and universities have a ton of those. The place I go to has like 20 pokestops and 3 gyms on the main campus alone.
To farm XP, catch every pokemon you come across, use pokeballs, catch even the ones that are really common to level up as fast as possible but focus on ones you haven't caught yet as they grant the most xp.
Oh and don't put weak pokemon on gyms. You can't remove them until they get beaten by an opposing team so your weak, shitty 30cp mon will be shitting up a gym and making it easier to take for your opponents. Wait until you can put something decent up there.
Finally, try to capture gyms that are in the middle of nowhere or are in an awkward place to access. There were some gyms in the beta that I saw every day that no one ever even tried to put a pokemon (not even me) because it was just too much of a pain to get to them and do it. If you capture one of those you should be able to keep it for a very long time without contest.

The coin allow you to purchase pokeballs, storage, Lucky Eggs(x2 exp), incubators for eggs, and items to help lure pokemon.
Playing without these makes this game pure garbage. 2500 coins a day made the game playable and "fun" to an extent.

I've played numerous freemium games and I've never spent any money on them, because it all comes down to how good you can get at them or how much time are you willing to wait for rewards, instead of taking the fast way and paying for them.

I had tons of left over cash from getting that much every day.
1000 coins a day would have been enough to make the game playable. 2500 made it so you could buy any item whenever you wanted in pretty much any quantity.
I had over 50 000 coins spare at the end of the beta without even trying to save them.
Not condoning those prices though. Still needs about 10 dollars a day to be fun (1000 coins).

Lets look at the prices for items
First you start with
2 Incense which last 30 minutes each so 1 hour total
50 pokeballs which is an alright amount. Make sure you don't miss though since these will last 1 - 3 days depending on how active you are.
The above point is moot if you live near plenty of Poke'Stops assuming they didn't nerf the rewards or the time between rotations(was 5 minutes)
1 permanent egg incubator. If the pokemon stops are ANYTHING like the beta you will be swimming in eggs and need quite a few of them.
Okay not onto the prices

20 - 100 gold
100 - 460 gold
200 - 800 gold
Incense/Lucky Eggs
1 - 80 gold
8 - 500 gold
25 - 1250 gold
Incubators - 150 gold
Lures - 100 Gold each / 680 Gold for 8
Space - 200 gold per upgrade
Now go look at the prices for gold again.
Mind you Lucky Eggs are immensely useful in this game since you only get max XP for a capture on the first capture and Lucky Eggs double the XP.
Levels in this game limit how powerful your pokemon are and how powerful the pokemon you find in the wild are. Levels also limit the kind of items you can get from pokestops.
