The biggest problem with video game localizations and translations is that there's no quality control or any sort of proper criticism involved. And why would there be? The target audience who doesn't understand Japanese or whatever the original language is will never know how hard they're getting duped, and if they do, they'll usually downplay censoring and even outright translation errors out of brand loyalty or other rationalization, because to them something is better than nothing and it's not like they have much of a choice in the matter aside from not buying the game at all. This isn't something that's limited to official localizations either, as fan translations are also often full chock of errors or memespouting in a seek to inflate the translator's e-peen. Many people were defending the first Dangan Ronpa's "おい = oy vey" fan translation.
In addition there are no respectable international vidya critics like there are movie or literary critics who can also talk about localization quality. The notable vidya journalists (who most likely don't know Japanese either) themselves are actually often in favor of self-censorship and removing anything that could be argued to be offensive or disturbing to Western audiences.
If you really care about the matter, your only choice is to vote with your wallet, possibly mail the actual companies and spread the word, or better yet cut the middle-man altogether and just learn Japanese. Talking about the matter on /v/ is also fine as it informs other anons, but in itself doesn't work as any kind of solution.

Come on now. Taro deals in themes and feelings, to him it's MUCH better to have words changed to convey the underlying concept than to remain faithful to the words and lose the concept in translation.
It's not like One Piece, where every word and every background character in every panel becomes relevant years after the fact so accuracy is important to continuity. Taro barely has his OWN conception of canon, which is why Nier is either Yonah's young brother or old father depending on which fucking CONSOLE you played it on.

I honestly thought Korra was pretty good and I'm not even a Platinumdrone. Amazed how much it got shit on considering it was a solid game that ran really well even on the lower end consoles. Worst you could say is that it's a bit short but it's a budget downloadable title anyway.

Most of Franz Kafka's published works have to be altered heavily for content because much of the wordplay and metaphor makes no sense in English. Capturing the "feel" of his stories outside of the native German is an extremely complex process.
This happens all the time in literature.
There's a difference between changes made because the original content is deemed offsensive to the new audience, and because the original content is deemed indecipherable to the new audience.
