Had to stop playing cuz wife was complaining I was playing all the time.
This game has "chests" and "premium currency" in which give you troops and get enough troops, and upgrade them.

I've been playing Boom Beach, which is Super Cell's other strategic game, a lot for the almost a year now and I'm almost at the end game stage of it. Its similar to CoC but its not a re-skin and it does cater to more "older" people to.
Its pretty satisfying to play, for a mobile game it is pretty advanced in terms of strategy and provides both a decent defend gameplay and a good attack gameplay.
Haven't touched CoC or any other popular mobile games though, but CoC was definitively very popular among kids back when I repaired iPads for schools and about 90% of them had it installed.

Thats one of the main problems with the game. You will eventually hit an "equilibrium point" where the amount of gold/elixir you lose to raids and the amount you can bring in will prevent you from really going above a certain amount of resources. So the expensive upgrades, like in the 5+ million range, become near impossible to upgrade without letting gems fill the gap. And gem income for non paying players is way too low to get much in the way of upgrades done.

You haven't even begun to see. Upgrades start costing 7 million plus at town hall 9. Its literally impossible to upgrade them without gems.
The game is friendly enough to non paying players below Town Hall 8, more or less, but once you hit that level, good fucking luck actually bringing in enough to matter.
And walls are expensive but at least the cost for each segment is doable.
Better to spend gold and elixir making your base harder to break than just let it sit and lose it to raids anyway.

Anyone here play KH: Unchained X? It's actually pretty fair in terms of getting free gems, and the whole thing is pretty simple to play, you can actually just play without spending a whole bunch, leveling up even refills the "wait" gauge.

Very few people I know of actually enjoy mobile games. They are the worlds most excensive slightly enjoyable time sink. Nobody is having discussions about clash of clans strategy, or at least if they are they have very little to discuss.
I played both Clash of Clans and Boom Beach for over a year before quitting and spent five dollars on each.
I'm playing Clash Royale and have spent nothing.
You can do well enough without spending money and it'll take a few months before you hit a p2w wall.
If my brother and nephew weren't playing, I wouldn't be either.
They're fun diversions to blow ten minutes on here and there. Like in the bathroom at work.
You set some timer, like a chest opening, and then go about your business you were going to do anyway and you get rewarded later.
These games work because they make you feel a sense of progression even while not playing it. Thats what WoW wanted to emulate with their Garrison but thats not on a phone so you can't easily drop in and out.
