There is nothing to indicate that OoT Link wasted his life or anything, people just like to make up an edgy life story. It's confirmed that he had children, and that TP Link is his descendant.
It's much more reasonable to assume he went back home after MM, had a family, did some minor heroic efforts he's remembered by in TP, and died in peace, with lingering regret that his heroic destiny sort of fizzled out thanks to time travel fuckery.
