I watched a playthrough of it to up until Cassius left after saving Estelle, Joshua, and those kids in that tower at the start of the game, and watched the same amount of the Evo version, and the localization seems pretty damn solid. Story ranges from mediocre to decent, the character are massive cliches, the pacing is terrible (I can't believe how many "go look around the whole area and then return back to the guy that give you the quest to unlock a scene that finally allows you to finish it" parts there are in this shit) and doesn't really get all that exciting until the later chapters and the combat is very dull, repetitive and boring.

The reason I like Trails in the Sky so much is that it writes a lot of detail into otherwise conventional characters, and that goes for NPCs and Liberl/Zemuria as a whole. Great visual style/music and concepts help too. FC and SC both are impressive in many small ways, adding up to a sense of fullness. I wouldn't be surprised if there's something better for me out there, though, so I'm not too attached to this series. Falcom's Gagharv trilogy on Win9x is said to have more subtlety and better pacing.

Honestly, this was probably one of the better localization choices that was made, along with Renne's title becoming "Angel of Slaughter". Direwolf sounds a lot more threatening than "Lanky Wolf", and "Angel of Slaughter" has a more visceral feel to the title that the fan translated titles couldn't capture.
