They don't matter in the grand scheme. Piracy control is actually not a big concern to the profits of the industry. In fact, they are only so vocal about it because it is a policy to prevent it, but it doens't really matter to them.
I don't pirate since a long time iirc, i have no reason to because games are fucking cheap on Steam but i don't fucking care that people pirate and that argument about pirating a game and playing for a while and then deciding to buy the game is true, i did that with The Witcher 2, Dark Souls 1 and Torchlight.
The best deterrent tp pirates is providing game demos.

I have a fairly low paying job and I can purchase all the games I actually want. I used to pirate all the time but it was literally because it was hard to get copies of what I wanted where I lived. With steam's return policy it kind of eliminated the concept of try before you buy anyway. Most of the games I buy, I like. When I like something, I don't mind paying for it. All of these reasons are my own and I don't really judge people who pirate but something I hate is the reactionary development against it suchas shallow systems that require the game to be always online or whatever. I also know a couple of people who have the mentality that if a game doesn't have multiplayer it should be pirated. While I'm fine with pirates doing whatever they want, this mindset really fucking grinds my gears since good single players are a dying breed.

Pirated DS3 was more stable than non-pirate DaS 3 on launch for example. Its the same thing as pirating movies and not having to sit through 1000 ads before you get to the actual movie.

In my experience, it just doesn't happen. It works fine or it doesn't work at all. I'm inclined to believe just general idiocy is the root cause of those issues.
