Stellaris is a poorly-conceived idea from its root. The 'variety' aspect of it ("what empire will you build?") is meaningless set dressing that has very little impact on the boring and shallow gameplay. It doesn't even have that autism-attracting quality of historical map painters.
Like, congratulations, you defeated your big 'fascist' empire and now the biggest blob on the map is your 'democratic technocracy' blob. What now, asshole? It's just anonymous colors on a bland randomized chartmap.
It took Paradox many many years to make a space game, and they only did this when their company reached casualization critical mass. This leads me to believe they actually had the idea before, but decided against it for the reasons above. Human empire with the same back story I used for gal civ 3, the basic premises: An alternate earth where the left minded seperated from the right minded, the right could not stand it after the apartheid was abolished and as the left governed most of the goverment, the right decided to leave Earth to the left.
