I actually really like Call of Duty, but I hate games that try to BE like CoD. Call of Duty is a pretty fun multiplayer FPS when you're playing it, it isn't great, but it's fun. Games that modernize and become more and more like CoD though are basically removing the only reason to play them, because if you wanted to play CoD you'd just play CoD. Doom 3 is unironically one of my favourite games of all time. Doom 2 being my favourite.
I think the big issue is this: The guns are designed and balanced for fighting demons, not other players, and that's where things get troublesome.
Take the Super Shotgun. At point blank, it'll one-hit kill weak enemies like Imps. That other enemies like Pinkie Demons take three or so shots at the same range from the same gun tells you "Oh - shit. These are considerably chunkier!". No such distinction exists here.
Also, sniper rifles and rat-a-tat assault rifles in a DOOM game was a horrible idea.

Played it for a little bit and it plays and looks like every other modern fps down to the two weapon scheme, loadouts, unlockable weapons and everything, I guess people are hyped for this game because of the history the name carries and that's about it.
Overrall I can't see your average guy buying this over the newest CoD or Battlefield, there's nothing in this game that other games haven't done before and better since existing FPS franchises had enough time to improve their winning formulas while doom 4 is a newcomer.
I thought Duke Nukem Forever was a good lesson for developers to learn that resurrecting old classic franchises isn't exacly a good idea but I guess some people don't learn.

Just played a few matches of the multiplayer. Seems a bit shallow to me compared to something like UT or quake.
I enjoyed what I played, but I don't see myself spending a lot of time in it.

Doom 3 and RoE were pretty fun in Single player.
and, of course there's those mods - one of the more popular ones being Dark Mod, and then there's Classic Doom 3.
