That's not really what DaS2's throwbacks did, though. It wasn't suggesting anything new about the old items or NPCs, it only told us what we already knew from DaS1 and threw on a tagline of how all that happened a long time ago.
Whereas DaS3 hints at and in some cases shows what has actually happened to those old things since the time of DaS1, like the imprisoned Darkwraith in Lothric or the spot where you find the Quelana Pyromancy Tome.

Literally the only reason I'm even doing it now is because I've never even attempted to invade in previous games.
All you get are piss all for souls, an ember (which are easier to get just plopping your sign at a boss), and more trouble than either of these are worth.

So, the area right after Onionbro helped me kill the fire demon thing I noticed one of those body bags hanging with an item. Right as I swung my sword to knock it down I noticed the bodybag squirming around like the person inside was still alive. Then it fell and I got a north something or other armor set. Did I just accidentally kill an NPC or was there no way not to kill it?

Had to fight that fucker twice because he bugged on out my first time since I got summoned to defend the swamp. Came back from the summon and he was just standing in the middle of the room with no boss hp bar. The adds still spawned and final form cutscene triggered but he still just stood there. Bone'd outta there because I wasn't down to cheese him out like that.
