In the past week alone there have been so many Mario N64 developments I'm convinced Nintendo's not behind them.

First it was OP's pic.

Then it was the quantum physicist.

And last night somebody discovered Mozart's grave.

Is there no end in sight? Zelda is getting left behind in the dust and Mario's lore just keeps going and going.

I don't care if you guys think this is autistic, I found it super interesting
I mean the challenge he does I don't care, but the physics behind it are very interesting to know
How many games have hidden glitches/physics/tricks hidden like that that we'll never know about because they're not popular games and no one cares enough to explore them?
>>
>>324307995
This brand of autism is the reason we have jet engines
>>
>>324308876
>don't care if you think this is autistic
Stop mentioning it first then. You're just asking for more imbeciles to come in and say it.

Also, I don't think what he did is all that special. I mean he's probably just using things well-documented in tcrf.net. That's not to say he didn't put hard work into figuring this out, but I think any debugger with enough time could've done this.

I think he should be credited for his ability to explain it though in a way that doesn't drag on and bore the viewer. So to answer your question, I don't think there are many games with physics this deep. Just SM64.

>>324307995
Yeah, this is easily the best thing to come out of 2016 so far. I've been watching his videos all evening.

One of the things I really enjoy about Mario 64 is the lore. You can see all the subtle world building in the levels, and there are so many interesting things to discover. For example Bob omb battlefield, it's so interesting with that war, and the two different bob omb groups against each other. I wish Nintendo would make a proper sequel to 64 with tons of lore hidden.

Imagine if these rules applied to real life. You can't hop onto the parallel universe right next to you, you gotta find one that matches the checking of your space.

Also the further away the PU is the more deviation to the traveling that occurs, that video was super interesting.

Emulate it only if you have a controller (don't use keyboard). Otherwise you're better off playing the DS remake. I'm biased because it's my favorite game of all time, so I recommend it. I'm sure it's aged, but the cartoon style helps a bit.

And the worst of all, you have to find the right slopes in the right place to gain enough speed to travel to those PUs and travel back to the original one. If you miscalculate, you'll be forever lost in a PU, and maybe everything would be invisible.

This is some fucked up JOJO shit, if you ask me.

The parallel universe thing is misleading, he just explains it that way because it's easier to understand and it's what it looks like on camera.
What's actually happening is that Mario becomes invisible while a projected image of Mario is flying all over the place, far away from the stage, but his height and movement always matching the real (but invisible) Mario, and the real Mario is "looping" around the stage (like Pac-Man)

There a way to help him out, but you need to play 4 human players. Mario, Luigi, peach and Toad. You must all have power stars and all be touching the Jail Door. if you all manage to activate your stars at the exact same time, the cage with bust open

If we allow everyone as much prep time as they need, and make them the most powerful they can be, then mario is almost unkillable.
In Mario 64, Mario's forward speed is almost unlimited, programming-wise. The only reason we haven't gone faster than light yet is because the game would CRASH.
here's a video demonstrating just how fast mario can go.

Am I the only person that was stuck on this star forever because I didn't know you could run up walls? Besides these pillars I can't think of a single other instance besides Bowser in the Sky that would let you do this. Does the game ever tell you how?
>>
>>324310761
Mozart is dead there is no way i could live that long anyway.
>>
>>324326472
It took me awhile too, I think I just flew to all of the pillars with the Wing Cap for a long time until I realised you could just walk up them
>>
>>324326472

>>
>>324326654

>>
>>324326472
Initially I used the wingcap, but riding the turtle shell in that level was so fun I think I eventually ended up hiting a pillar and going up I think?
>>
>>324326472
the pillars have slants at the bottom, pretty much tells you to run up them
>>
>>324326772
Yeah, I remember doing that until I got to the final level and could only proceed forward by running up the wall with an arrow. Maybe if the gradient was a bit more like a curve I would've got it easier.

Also when I was younger platforming was fucking hard because when I played Mario 64 at the age of 6 my brain and hand-eye coordination were basically mush, so it was pretty difficult.
>>
>>324326472
Mario 64 has a lot of this clueless level design of shit that you would just have no idea how to do
There's so much shit this game never accurately explains to you that it's mind boggling, like those gravity walls and shit.
I mean, this is just me, but i had no idea Shifting Sand Land had a boss until 3 years ago.
>>
>>324326986
How does that tell you that it's possible to walk straight up a pillar? The star was not difficult by any means, but there was literally no indication beforehand that you could miraculously walk straight up that pillar.

I was replaying OoT and got up to the Dodongo's Cavern, there I took another look at that Eternal Star sign that appears in Mario 64 and OoT. I noticed that it's actually a name under the words "Eternal Star" but I can only figure out the Jr. at the end.

It looks like "Pin Nhyung Jr" or some shit.

it's not a TAS, since watching the video it's obvious that he does this shit for TWELVE FUCKING HOURS

just so he can get a star without pressing the A button more than once (or half of an A-press if you want to encourage his brand of autism)

TASing the game means that they'd be exploiting these glitches as a means to save time and get stars quicker. Here, he's just doing it as a means to play the game in a category that he created, and is literally the only person in both the speedrunning and TAS community that cares.

I'm not saying it has bad level design though. I'm saying that there's shit this game doesn't explain at all, like the pillars, the clock hand stopping in Tick Tock Clock, some secret areas like the peach slide window and such.

I never said I couldn't figure it out- I only replayed SM64 like 3 years ago, which is when I got 110 stars and am planning on getting the last 10 soon.
Games should give you a hint for this kinda stuff- like the light shining in the lobby for the Wing Cap, leading you to look up and be transported into the level, or the peg for the chain chomp being on the opposite of the level from him so you can see that they can be ground-pounded.

These hints range from telling you exactly what to do to being obtuse as fuck.
Let's compare and contrast.
World 1:
Star 1: Big Bob-omb on the Summit
Star 2: Footrace with Koopa the Quick
Star 3: Shoot to the Island in the Sky
Star 4: Find the 8 Red Coins
Star 5: Mario Wings to the Sky
Star 6: Behind Chain Chomp's Gate
World 11
Star 1: Shocking Arrow Lifts!
Star 2: Top O' The Town
Star 3: Secrets in the Shallows & Sky
Star 4: Express Elevators--Hurry Up!
Star 5: Go to Town for Red Coins
Star 6: Quick Race through Downtown

As you can see, the earlier levels basically tell you what to do, and the later levels provide only the most basic of hints. Seriously, what the fuck is Express Elevators- Hurry Up?

Miyamoto here. Let me explain through my translator.

Basically what you're looking at is a tombstone.

"Giant red dodongo. When it sees red, a new way will open."

That is a reference to Mario. We placed hints throughout the game such as the paintings in the courtyard to let the player know that the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule are a shared world. Note: Miyamoto laughs.

What happens is that the Bowser that you fought in Super Mario 64 isn't the original Bowser. He's Bowser Jr. This is because Ocarina of Time happens concurrently with Mario 64, in which Mario had to end Bowser Jr. with the Megaton Hammer. Hence why Darunia couldn't find it. The chronology of the Mario series goes Sunshine, 64, Galaxy, and then finally Luigi's Mansion which takes place 7 years later, right before Link defeats Ganon.

Therefore, the memorial you see in the courtyard is for the original Bowser, and the tombstone you see in Ocarina of Time is for Jr. With his full family name. We can't remember what it says laughs, but we made sure to get the "Jr."

I'm sorry that we never addressed this, but we thought that the player would have fun figuring it out on their own.

It's really fascinating to think that so many pieces of software fail due to some cosmic radiation happening to hit your hardware at an inconvenient moment and temporarily interfering with the circuitry.

Any time a website randomly fails, an application crashes without reason, it could be because some cosmic ray has been travelling for thousands of light years and happened to hit your processor in a precise and inconvenient location and time.

You really are retarded...
In the levels there is an elevator, and if you just wander around trying stuff out of curiosity(that's why the levels are free roam instead of linear, so you can try and test without the need to strictly do what you're told to) you'd find out what activates, and the elevator is timed so that, for a normal player who doesnt know how to exploit all moves to move faster around the level, you have a very small window of time to reach it anduse it to get the star, hence the "Hurry Up".
