Turns out no, because even if you give your NPCs equipment that makes them invincible to everything, they still don't do as much damage as super high level monsters and their HP pools are so obscene that it doesn't matter if they get hit.
Also you can ride them. You can only ride your spouse out of combat.

Forging is like the biggest part of winning in this game.
Lava Cave is a test, to prepare you to get good already for when shit really gets hard.
Always play in hard mode, or else you won't have a chance when Rune Prana comes around and its like "What, why is this game a thousand times harder now?"
Hard mode prepares you for bullshit, and teaches you to become just as bullshit to overcome it.

Yeah, there's a certain upgrade stone that multiplies the effect of the last item you upgraded the weapon/armor with, so if you for example, increase the range and then apply the x10 (!) multiplier you'll have a ridiculous range.

Upgrading with the same item on the same weapon won't have much effect after the first one.
Get your forging level up
Just upgrade random weapons with grass if you have to, but get your level up. You can get broken shit early on if you figure out some of the secrets, but for now just do it.
