In Russia, it's a recent phenomena. Homosexuality is, unfortunately, considered a covert means by which the West is trying to introduce liberal democracy to Russia. Considering how badly Russia was fucked over by a free market system in the 90's, and considering how paranoid of the West it's become due to political leadership, any sort of display of anything associated with the West is despised - literary clubs of Western writers, particular newspapers, particular music and fashion etc. In many ways, it's really the fault of gay groups in Western Europe why homosexuality is disparaged in Russia at the present moment - too quickly they associated homosexuality with Western political ideas, too easily they allowed themselves to become a means by which Western governments could attack track records elsewhere.

Hm, well. I have these few headcanons about how Mercy and D.Va got to know each other, like
