>>71883714
Why would it be weirder to watch in 2015 than 1981?
>>71883808
I guess because Adric would be over the age of consent now.
Too old for cats.
>>71883808
Maybe because JNT's biography came out around then, apparently with some kind of gay/scandalous stuff in?
>>71883916
Weirdly, he was 20 or thereabouts when playing Adric (born 1961) but I had to look it up so can see why you'd think that
>>71883407Tennant > Colon Baker
>>71883808
Not him, but maybe back then it would seem more innocent? Simpler times and all? I don't think parents back then would have raised an eyebrow. For instance now you'd be hard pressed to find a parent that would allow their children to be alone with a catholic priest, back then it probably would have been encouraged. Sexual preditory things and what not are more a part of the cultural zeitgeist now I'd think.

>>71887860
Not really, he's been reluctant to talk about it or name names - most we've got is something about the "culture that'd grown up around the series". People think it was probably Keith Boak he argued with, but that's just a guess

Favorite Nu-Who Doctor
1st. War Doctor (thought John Hurt was masterful in his redition of the world weary doctor.
2nd. Tenth Doctor. While I originally wasn't a huge fan of his character, I love the idea of this Doctor having one of the shortest life spans (7-10 years) in combination with being one of the most human. Only Doctor to waste a regeneration to maintain his form.
3rd. Ninth Doctor - Underrated and taken too soon from this world. Absolutely fantastic.
4th. Tweflth Doctor - A great throwback to the cantakerous old man. Wasn't the biggest fan of his relationship with Clara.
5th. 11th Doctor comes in last, which isn't to say he's a character, just my least favorite version. He knew he was on his last regeneration and decided that he wanted to spend his final life being adored (hence the youth) and "forgetful" of the Time War because he didn't want to spend the remainder of his life with the regrets of the tenth doctor hanging over him.

>>71890852
It's only been recent that Ten usurped 12 (and it's only because he's one of the more flawed regenerations) as well as Capaldi still having another season to go. 12 is still fucking phonomenal and I'd argue that he was one of the few Doctor iterations capable of surving the confession dial in in the manner he did in Heaven Sent. I can see the 1st, 4th, 6th, 8th, Ward, and 9th being the ones to survive while the others (especially 10, 11) would probably perish.

>>71892372
I actually haven't heard those yet. I was referring to the (very good) fan anthology, up on the Faction Paradox mega.

>>71892764
Yes. However there are gaggles of people roaming the streets playing. There were easily 20 of them that I could see from my window last night. I'll have to wake up super early to avoid them. There were reports of muggings a couple of towns over, but I figure that's BS.
I guess it just became available for my cheap ass phone, because I checked the past two nights. I want that little blue tooth wristband that vibrates too.

>There were reports of muggings a couple of towns over, but I figure that's BS.
Why? I mean, muggings are something that really happens.
>>71893165
There's alot of fear mongering around here in general. Like razor blades in halloween candy. It's facebook clickbait stuff. >>71893336

It's probably the phone or tablet the child would be using that would be the item stolen presumably. Iphones are pretty snazzy pieces of equipment.
Favorite Nu-Who Stories V2
>Series 1
The Empty Child - The Doctor Dances (I was legitly terrified of this episode's concept the first time I watched it.
>Series 2
The Girl in the Fireplace (time travel, check. interesting premise and smoking hottie madame de pompador. Terrifying clockword villains with body harvesting themes. Total awesome.
>Series 3
Utopia - Sound of Drums - Last of the timelords. While this story drags a little, Jon Simm as the Master steals every scene he's in. Like him more than Missy.
>Series 4
Silence in the Library - Forest of the Dead
>Series 4 Specials
The Next Doctor - Not as epic as Waters of Mars of End or End of Time, but I found it super fun.
>Series 5
Vincent and the Doctor (brought me to tears).
>Series 6

>Series 7
Angels take Manhattan (not my favorite weeping angel story, but a great send off to the ponds).
>Series 8
Mummy on the Orient Express
>Series 9
Under the Lake - Before the Flood (claustrophic underwater ghosts with time travel).
Favorite Nu-Who Doctor
1st. 9th Doctor - Absolutely fantastic.
2nd. 12th Doctor - Pragmatic, self doubting, fiercly witty, and constantly questioning if he's a good man.
3rd. 11th Doctor - The madman in a box. One of the more cruel iterations. Old man in young body that had progressed to the natural end of his life before receiving new regeneration cycle.
4th. War Doctor - A Doctor that has seen too much and was willing to sacrifice his morality for the universe.
5th. 10h Doctor comes in last, which isn't to say he's a bad character. Vain, egotistical, he declared himself the "winner", Time Lord Victorious, and realized he had done what he had feared and "lived to long".

>>71893720
I like Missy more than Simm, but I agree that that story is crazy underrated. Everyone hates it but I think it's probably Davies' second-best finale, even if it steals the plot of No Future a bit.
>>71894863
>Rose isn't written quite right
What's wrong with Rose in that episode?
I want to rewatch Press Gang. What a good show.
>>71894944
The stuff with her in Jack's ship just doesn't feel like Rose to me. I feel like Rose is much more direct and straightforward than she is there.
>>71895017
Shrug i've never really noticed.
>>71894944
Not that guy but Rose was a complete mess throughout Series 1, I know in that episode she swooned pretty hard for Jack right away, after ditching her boyfriend to travel with the Doctor and then sort of falling for yet another guy kind of makes her a cunt.I mean obviously anybody would swoon for Jack but still.
>>71887012
I let out a hearty laugh at this
>>71895351
Thank you, I was afraid it was a bit too obvious.
Five Underrate Nu-Who Episodes
>Series 1
The Long Game (I love the idea of the worm in Sattelite 5).
Bad Wolf (while extremely dated, I loved the doctor's melancholic temperment while in the big brother house. Also set up for a fantastic season finale.
>Series 4
Planet of the Ood (fucking creeptastic ending that is nightmare fuel).
>Series 5
Beast Below (Amy's first offical outing in space/time, unique enough plot that starts insidious and ends sentimental.) Also demonstrates why Amy is a good companion.
>Series 9
Into the Dalek. While probably not going to be on anyon's top five or even top ten list, Capaldi's first outing where he's not suffering from regeneration sickness was a fantastic introduction to the Doctor's character that starts him down the path of character devleopment that is season 8.
Also grungy/blazer/hoody Capaldi is the best look ever.
>>71882303
My fav Davison story and one of the BOATest of Classic Who. The whole thing is just full of great ideas (although admittedly one or two may just be ripped off from The War Games).

>>71900075
Eh, I know Cartmel felt that way after the fact but in a way it makes the Brig even more of a bloody legend - by all rights he *should* be dead on the battlefield, but he defies narrative convention to peacefully "fade away" like he wanted to.

It's not a grudge. I'm happy that Dr Who is popular once again. If fact if anything it's more popular now than it ever was before at least in my lifetime. I've just come to accept that the modern show is not to my tastes but it's not like I hate it or wish for cancellation. That would be silly.
Re-watched s8's Into the Dalek earlier.
I'd honestly forgotten how good it was. Much under-rated episode imho. And Journey Blue would've been a gr8 companion.
>>71912276
That episode is seriously great, the director who's name I've forgotten did a really bang up job with it.
>>71912241
Capaldi's seasons are closest in 'feel' to the old Who that I grew up with.

He's shite now but everyone loved him at the time. We have him partly to thank that the show is still on air.
>>71912742
I liked s9 overall. The only clunker was Sleep some More.
Even Hell Bent was never boring, althoClara should've bravely gone back to Trap Street at the end, after 'healing' the Doctor of his post-Heaven Sent PTSD.
Was anyone else really bum bothered when it was revealed that The Doctor left Gallifrey because of the hybrid legend? I feel like through out nuwho its been implied that The Doctor left Gallifrey because of some type of heavy loss or something with the whole "I made a promise" speech hes done a few times but then out of nowhere we find out that the real reason was because he heard a sp00ky story and couldn't handle how 2deep4u it was and ran away.
>>71913070
I have a feeling people's opinion of the RTD era will go up over time. You could also argue that Classic Who hasn't aged very well, but it's far enough in the past that it's easier to view it and appreciate it as a product of its times.
>>71913417
That and it shits all over Lungbarrow, yeah.
>>71913468
Anon, everything shits all over Lungbarrow.
>>71913417
A little. However, there's wiggle room there--you can easily say that the Doctor was exaggerating his fear, in order to figure out the Veil's plan. Also, to survive.
>>71913417
>it was revealed that The Doctor left Gallifrey because of the hybrid legend?
Was it?
>>71913417
That doesn’t seem to me to erode the mystery in any significant way. Indeed, the idea that he is “scared” with regards to his his “vast and terrible” reasons for doing what he does rather fails to qualify as a revelation at all. We still don’t know what he was scared of. Some revelation, perhaps involving the hybrid, but notably the episode makes it clear that even the Doctor doesn’t actually remember the revelation he got in the Cloisters. The question of why he ran would literally seem to be a mystery even to himself.
There have been a lot of explanations offered for why the Doctor left Gallifrey but I think "he was scared" actually fits the onscreen 1st Doctor a lot better than "he was bored" or "he left because of some political drama" or "something something untempered schism".

I always preferred the theory that he ran after witnessing the corruptness of the council and/or Rassilon and vowed to never become like them
>>71913909
Or that he wanted to return to Earth to raise his granddaughter because he is half human
>>71913417
>implying the existence of a reliable narrator in Who
>>71913417
I have long since gratanted complete indifference to Moffat canon. Whatever he writes, it passes like throw me as if I was dying of diarrhoea.
>>71913417
>we find out that the real reason was because he heard a sp00ky story and couldn't handle how 2deep4u it was and ran away.
We didn't really find that out. Didn't that happen when he was a child anyway?
There's so much room for strange and unfathomable shit to have happened between then and his leaving Gallifrey. It's still basically open to the imagination and if anything Moffat has made the mystery more complicated, not less.
I always liked to imagine it as the Doctor rejecting Gallifrey because of problems with the culture and the system. "I ran because I was scared" still fits that.
The one universal thing that The Hybrid can be described as, in the context of the Doctor's past, is the combination of Time Lord with something foreign, perverting it. That doesn't even have to be a half-human child or a human companion or a half-Dalek weapon. It could even be a Time Lord with ideals and beliefs that go against accepted Time Lord culture. Or a Time Lord that knew a secret so terrible that it would unravel the very concept of the Time Lords' existence.
Maybe the Doctor was scared of the consequences that would face him and Susan if he stayed within that culture.

Careful m8 he'll get you erased

I’m neutral on it - I don’t think they’ve reduced the mysteries as such. A complete blank isn’t a mystery. None of them have answered questions that had previously been asked and flagged as terribly significant, and all of them have raised new questions. It’s not something I get hugely excited about as a storytelling choice, but I don’t think it’s done any harm at all.
The Doctor is a hybrid of Time Lord and self-aware metafiction. He is part fictional and part real. The secret he keeps from everyone around him is the truth of their own fictionality, the truth that would make the Time Lords redundant and reconfigure all of reality.

Fuck off Phil.

Cannot understand why anyone takes an interest in politics.
The election result that Murdoch supports always wins in the UK anyway.
There's no point to it. Anyone with any good ideas is exterminated.
>>71914629
>Murdoch
All the artists, actors and assorted creative people who've died in 2016, and that malevolent little shit keeps going...
Its a shame the Timelord and Gallifrey stories are almost always written poorly because we really need more characters that can be equals of The Doctor in nuwho. with how 10 was depicted as "The Doctor: A Punished God" or how 11 was depicted as "The Doctor: War God, Bringer of Destruction" I feel like there's only a matter of time before The Doctor is actually nailed to the cross to regenerate for our sins and I have no real problem with all of this it's just that I don't think his own race should be seeing him in the same light as us humans do, among beings like the High Council or Rassilon The Doctor should seem like a minor greek god around The Olympians in my opinion.

Why does the tardis sometimes have some black rectangles in the window while other time it does not? Is it some kind of deepu symbolism for The Doctor's mood or just prop mistakes?
>>71915249
I was a viewer beforehand but it was Remembrance of the Daleks that made me a fan.
>>71915249
The Eleventh Hour.
>>71915249
Dalek I think. Or Bad Wolf.
Those were two things I remembered when I first saw the show before years later I thought "There was that show I liked. Turns out it's called Doctor Who. Should watch"
>>71915249
For about 2 years I watched and rewatched NuWho blissfully ignorant of the fanbase.
2010 rolls around and I join reddit/r/doctorwho and still rather enjoyed myself.
By 2013 I realized I was in the company of children and imbeciles.
I'm not certain why I'm here now.
>>71915560
You are a child or an imbecile. Personally, I'm an imbecile.

Imbecile. Every time, sir.

Because /who/ is GOAT that's why.

Yeah. I like you jerks.
>>71915249
Always been a fan, but re-watching the Caves of Androzani over 30 yrs after the original broadcast was my pivotal moment. Damn that was a good story.
After that, I wanted to watch it all, good or bad.

It's alright. I'm pretty sure most of us know what it looks like.

Sometimes it has stained glass in only some of the windows, chalk it up to the Chameleon Curcuit being an idiot

>>71917121
She's far from the worst actress they've had. It's the bad American accent that's the problem.
>>71917169
Agreed. The actress that played Dodo is the worst.
>>71915249
Dalek, then I realised how cancerous Doctor Who had become with "Let's Kill Hitler". Dropped it and never been back
>>71917169
Yeah, she was far from being as CBBC tier as a certain actress who shall remain unnamed.Said CBBC tier actress is still one of my faves.
>>71917258
>not watching capaldi
>>71917169
it's not even just her american accent, she trembles and stutters like a rape victim all the time
>>71917350
to be fair she was often the target of attempted rapists
>>71917410
My favourite potential Peri rapist was Richard Bucket.
>And where are you from, miss? If you don't mind me asking.
>A long way away. I just sort of hitched a lift with this man. I didn't even think about it. I don't even know who he is. He's a complete stranger.
>Where's home?
>It's a long way away. I didn't really think. I just followed the Doctor and they don't even know where I am, my mum and dad. If I died here, they'd never know.
>>71917314
that Clara thing kept me away, which is a shame because I love Peter Capaldi. I'm reliably told by someone who hates Doctor Who but has self-admitted Stockholm Syndrome about it that I haven't missed much
>>71917563
How did Clara keep you away if you dropped it at Let's Kill Hitler?
