Hello, Cloister. 2 questions for Belle:

Does she mind if the horses talk, and did she want the story set in the medieval era? And does she prefer any particular tone (comedic, serious, etc)?

And, do you and Belle mind if I base some characters in the fic off of you too?
>>
>>71875496
Current one is def best one built from filming perspective. They could also change the lighting and the interior a bit and it would probably look quite different.

I agreem although RTD's console room is my fave (probs cos it was my first, and I liked the simplicity of it). The current one, with the Series 8 lighting, is definitely the best so far. I suspect it'll stay for a while longer yet, given how it's a fully built 360 set, suitable for HD and was likely quite expensive.
>>
>>71875496
It has been with us in some form since Christmas 2012, so by the time Chibnall's era begins it will have been here for more than 5 years. I think it will probably be safe to move on by then.

Yeah, definitely. The Smith version feels so basic and cold in comparison. I'm not a fan of the stuck on roundels down the bottom though (which I assume were for Capaldi more than anything). I think it got a bit too darkly lit in S9, so I'd revisit some warmer oranges and yellows maybe, or faded reds.

>>
>>71875892
That's a very pretty picture.

I was looking through the archives the other day, and man, leak /who/ was great. There was an energy in that time, that Doctor Who could do anything. Highs and lows, Series 8 fwlt experimental, like every ep of that series could do anything, be anything. Even Series 9 didn't quite capture that. Say what you want about "Kill the Hype" and "Into the Forest", but even when they were bad, they were bad in interesting ways. What other season would have had the companion tell the Doctor to piss off, or have the Earth be about to burn in flames? And Clara, for all her faults, was a companion who arguably was the most morally complex--I mean, she betrayed the Doctor!

Series 8 was underrated. And so was leak /who/. I still remember watching 12 talk to Rusty in "Into the Dalek", with his final monologue. No music, no special effects. Just 12's voice. It was great.

It felt like watching theater.

Oh, /who/ still likes S8. But I rarely hear people talk about it.

S9 was good. But, it felt like less of a psychological story than S8, and didn't quite have an arc like S8. Series 8 had the running plotline of "How will Clara and the Doctor affect each other? Will she be become like him? Will he leave her? Will she leave him? Why didn't Danny ever learn to SPLINK?".

But Series 9 doesn't really have that. Ther question of the "Hybrid" is never really part of an arc, since neither 12 nor Clara seems to care until the last few episodes. We don't seem to get any continued progression on the 12/Clara relationship until Face the Raven, and most of 12's arc in that series is dealing with Ashildr...which is never really brought into focus, despite several episodes featuring her. The climax of the season doersn't really have anything to do with her--her role in Face the Raven could have been anyone, and her role in HellBent could have (and probably should have) been Ohila, up until the ending with Clara. Clara and Me had almost no interaction post-(Girl Who Died) , so the ending in Face the Raven has no real meaning besides a parallel of Unearthly Child. Clara and Me never got a time to really talk--even one conversation about immortality would have been nice. The ending is great, but doesn't have the resonance of the final hug between 12 and Clara in Dark Water.
>>
>>71877951
The one person who gets an arc is the Doctor. However, his arc doesn't seem as telegraphed as the arc was in Series 8. Not that it wasn't telegraphed, mind you--12 says how much he's devoted to Clara several times in Series 9, especially in the first few eps. But it's just not given enough emphasis.
>>

Another thing is, I can tell you how each episode in Series 8 relates to the ending, and the series themes. Even the naff ones.

>Into the Forest

Clara becoming the Doctor, and how she misinteprets that role (based on mistaken views of 12), plus how the Doctor handles his responsibility to Earth, all come into play.

>Kill the Moon

The ending conversation between 12 and Clara.

And, to pick another ep,

>Flatline
Clara plays at Doctor.

Every single episode in Series 8 has some nod to the theme of the Doctor's role, Clara's relationship to the Doctor and how unhealthy it might be, and why Danny and Clara are perhaps doomed as lovers.

It is much harder to tell you how each episode in Series 9 relates to the ending, and to the theme overall of Series 9. How does, say, Sleep No More relate to the ending? (I could say that it shows how fallible the Doctor is, but it's much more open to intepretation). And the Under the Sea 2-parter? I can not tell you what it has to do with the final eps. Those were good eps, but by the end of it, I'm not sure we got anymore info about the Doctor and Clara than when we started. (There is the nice moment where Clara goes "I know that look", but it's few and far between.)

I know that Series 9 had more 2-parters than Series 8, but S8 still feels like a more thematic, connected whole than S9.

I think my problem with series 9 is that I downloaded the episodes coded in x265.

>Under the Sea 2-parter

The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you looking for

Under the sea
Under the sea
Darlin it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea

I haven't seen these since they aired but iirc one thing that connects them is it shows how 12 gives no fucks if he dies but it's a different matter if clala's life is endangered. I think it's also the first time he tries (kinda fails) to express his worries to her and his duty o' care.

Hilariously, I started actively following Who at Name of the Doctor. So I always knew her fate.

It's funny. Back then, many people were complaining about how Clara was so "nice" and simple. How she had no edges. Then Series 8 happenned, and all those people began praising Clara. While quite a few people who did like her S7B persona were put off by her.

>>
>>71879541
Yeah, that's what I mean. Clara didn't get too much of a presence in Series 9--the whole series was about the Doctor's arc, and I could see why they would want to ease up on dealing with Clara after focusing on her in Series 9.

But that also meant her "death" in Series 9 doesn't have the ummph it needs, and to a certain degree, neither does her ressurection. The skeleton's there, but it feels like we didn't get enough time her.

Actually, I think I'm exxagerating. But I think what we needed was another Doctor-lite episode, with just Clara and Me. That would have given us some needed details about both how they view each other, and how Clara views the Doctor post-Series 9. There's an arc of "Clara is living far too dangerously", which might have been better handled if she had been contrasted with someone who literally can't die.

>But that also meant her "death" in Series 9 doesn't have the ummph it needs

If the series is truly about the Doctor, then Clara's death should be examined primarily through its' effects on the Doctor. And isn't that what the driving force of Hell Bent was? Him going into the confession dial as a direct result of losing Clara?

An entire episode of torture over the loss of a companion surely fits.

/ramble
>>
>>71879887
That's why I said I was exaggerrating. Clara's death was good.

>"Be brave. Be brave. Be brave."

But I still feel the ending with Me would have had more to it, if Clara and Me had more interaction beforehand.

>>71879805
Also, I was used to him when he said "Those people down there. They're never small to me. Don't make assumptions about how far I will go to protect them, because I've already come a very long way. And unlike you, I don't expect to reach the promised land."
>>
>>71879987
True. But that still shortchanges Clara. And there's not enough emphasis on the Doctor to make it work.

However, I may need to rewatch it.

>But I still feel the ending with Me would have had more to it, if Clara and Me had more interaction beforehand.
Everything that was good about The Woman Who Lived could have been done with Clara in the episode. Having a Clara-less episode in S9, especially one that centred on Clara's eventual partner and could have been an opportunity to build their relationship, was a baffling mistake.
Alternatively, Sleep No More could have been scrapped and replaced with literally anything.
>>
I think S9's entire arc boils down to the Doctor's conflict with his moral compass.

>Davros tempting 12 with genocide
>Missy tempting 12 with killing the Dalek who "killed" Clara
>Abandoning young davros on a minefield
>Causing the flood in UtL/BtF
>Breaking his rules and reviving Ashildr
>Stopping Zygella from committing genocide by recounting his own
>Threatening Ashildr with wrath and fury
>Willingly facing death countless times in the confession dial
>Hell Bent

This series played around with tempting the Doctor into doing things he knows are wrong/enduring strife. The whole thing came to a head in Hell Bent when it came to saving Clara and getting what he wants.
>>
>>71880082
No, I think this is a valid critisicm, and part of why I believe series 9 missed the mark. (though I appreciate what it aimed for)
>>
>>71879241
I admit I kind of have a soft spot for S7 despite it's shortcomings for similar reasons. I was losing interest in Who because of the River storyline in S6, and I hadn't watched any classic Who yet. S7 got me interested in watching the classic series.
>>
>>71879778
Didn't he say something in an interview about how Clara's death and/or forgetting her made him think he was right to be all closed off and cynical? Keeping in mind the "trust no one" quote for S8, and "a monster that'll make you think about regeneration in new ways", so massive grain of salt about anything in interviews...

There is an element common to all of these that you haven't mentioned.
>Davros: the Doctor's friend/enemy
>Missy: the Doctor's friend/enemy
>Goes to dangerous lengths in UtL/BtF once he finds out Clara (his friend) is on the death list
>Ashildr ends up being the Doctor's friend/enemy
>Zygella, the Doctor's enemy, whom he ultimately treats as a friend
>HS/HB, goes to dangerous lengths to undo Clara's death
I think the real main theme of S9 is not just the Doctor's moral compass being challenged, but being challenged by a dangerous relationship. The theming is everywhere.

I don't know, but it should be something that feels like the conclusion of the themes from his run.

I like the idea that he's taken it upon himself to fuse with some evil and terrible being (like a hybrid) in order to contain it so it can't hurt others, but it's unbearably painful and the only way to purge it is with the blazing fire of a regeneration.
In both series 8 and 9, we had the idea of not wanting to let someone die even though the alternative was against their wishes.
