Ramsay's downfall this season was out of character, when he could have easily won the battle.
Ramsay suggests storming Castle Black to get back Sansa. He and Lord Karstark conspire to murder Roose because he is unwilling to murder the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, for fear of uniting every house in the North again them.
Ramsay instead sends a threatening letter to Jon in the aftermath, asking for Sansa back.
He lets Jon and co. travel all over the North to rally houses to his cause.
Jon and co. set up camp in the same location where Stannis had camped.
Ramsay and 20 good men inexplicably found said camp in the middle of a fucking frozen wasteland that's barricaded by mountains. Camp, food, horses, and siege equipment are burned.
Ramsay doesn't send his 20 good men this time to burn Jon and co.'s camp, which is numerically smaller than was Stannis's forces and is led by a less capable commander.
Ramsay allows Jon and co. to travel all the way to Winterfell before the hostile engagement ensues.
