Words: The Old, The True, The Brave
House Velaryon was a vassal house of House Targaryen before the Ruin of Valyria. The two houses frequently intermarried, and both settled across the Narrow Sea, around the fortress now called Dragonstone.
After the Ruin, when Aegon the Conqueror and his two sister-wives began their conquest of Westeros, the Velaryon seahorse was often below the Taragaryen dragon in battle. As vassals, the Velaryons (a pidgin bastardization of Valyrian) supported the Targaryen efforts, coming to a point in 0 AC, during the unification of the Seven Kingdoms.
House Velaryon flourished during the reign of the early Targaryen kings, wielding power and riches from old Valyria. They were second only to the Targaryens themselves, and were often husbands or wives of the royal family. Unfortunately, with the death of King Viserys I, House Velaryon's prospects entered stormy waters.
Queen Rhaenyra I, the disputed but rightful heir to Viserys, was usurped by her nephew Aegon II. This led to a civil war of never-before-seen and indeed never-again-seen proportions.
Rhaenyra and Aegon were both dragonriders, with many other dragonriders forming the backbone of the Blacks (those loyal to Rhaenyra) and the Greens (those loyal to Aegon). In fiery battle after battle, dragons proved just how dangerous they could be, as armies could not stand before them in the field. The relative peace of 130 years was incinerated by dragonfire.
House Velaryon was connected intimately to Rhaenyra. Her husband, though not the father of her children, her uncle, and most of her loyal forces came from the powerful lords of Driftmark and High Tide. So when Rhaenyra arrested Corlys Velaryon, her uncle, House Velaryon suffered a major slight and revoked its now dwindling support. Though Aegon III was crowned not long after by Lord Corlys Velaryon, the house had seen the first of its major defeats.

Disaster struck. The seas and skies both turned against the loyalist forces, smashing their fleet at anchor. The usurper Baratheon sent his brother Stannis to take the island of Dragonstone form the loyalist forces, aware of their ships’ destruction. Willem Darry spirited the children away to Essos with one of the remaining ships, while the crown’s forces prepared to surrender. House Velaryon had once again backed the wrong king.
As former loyalist Targaryen bannermen, the Velaryons were not given special treatment, despite being the blood of old Valyria. For twenty years, House Velaryon (and other Lords of the Narrow Sea such as Celtigar, Sunglass, and Bar Emmon) lived beneath Stannis Baratheon, the heir apparent to the Iron Throne. There was no lost love between the lord and his bannermen, but in 299 AC, when Stannis called his banners, House Velaryon was one of the first to arrive.

Aurane Waters, bastard relative of Monford, has stolen Queen Cersei’s fresh fleet and set himself up as King on the Stepstones like his ancestor Daemon Targaryen once did. While Stannis’ campaign in the North is a longshot, those loyal to him from the beginning will no doubt receive the greatest glory if he is victorious. The Velaryons, while bloodied, are not yet defeated.
“The Old, The True, The Brave”; their words ring true even after three crushing defeats. The house’s Valyrian heritage is still evident in their silver hair and purple eyes. Their history, though bloody, portrays them as a true, honorable house that will loyally support their liege lords. Velaryon knights and lords held no fear of the enemy, whether charging tens of thousands of wildlings in a last-ditch attempt to save the wall, or sailing at the head of the doomed Blackwater fleet. Their house words accurately describe the ancient nobility of House Velaryon.
