There is only one main character alive and still "themselves" at the end of the novels: Tyrion. Dany dies in Childbirth. Jon and Sansa kill each other over the right to rule the North (Catlyn's black blood being passed on to her kids is the reason Winter returned, but Jon has the Stark blood without the Hoare taint.)
At the end of the novels there is no Hoare descendant in Winterfell, but neither is there a Stark. The child Dany dies giving birth to is Jon's, so he's a valid Stark (magic doesn't care about bastardy or patrilineage) so there's hope he'll be able to drive back the Others in the future... a Dream of Spring (and our bittersweet ending)

The point is they've been heavily foreshadowing that Ramsay's reckless and psychopathic behavior would cause problems for him. Roose told him as such, they showed that the Umbers knew he was a kinslayer and are ONLY working with him to fight the wildlings, Davos' line, Jon's little line right before the battle, and a bunch of other shit I've probably forgotten about.
None of this happens and his men die like lemmings. He literally teamkills his entire cavalry and nobody bats an eyelash.

No, the book actually has a lot of great scenes with very little plot holes, and the battles are just a plus to that.
The show (especially season 6) is FILLED with glaring plotholes and inconsistencies (like davos character doing a 180 about everything this season) and a big action scene doesn't make up for that.
I know bookfags have a rep of whining about everything that isn't like the books, and that's probably deserved, but this season the show doesn't make sense WITH ITSELF.
