While the cut to Pyke suggests they meant Pyke, a good editor/director/whatever could use that to make people think he meant Pyke when he said home, to make it a bit of a surprise when he's suddenly back at Winterfell next time we see him, and to make that more powerful as the viewer realises he's not going home to safety at all.

This is a book thing, but he specifically brings up dishonorable people and a storied past which involves him doing all sorts of crazy shit as a kid and a young knight. He seems well aware of most fighting tactics regardless of honor. Also, this is a guy who fought along the sides of the smiling knight and the sword of the morning and was considered the best in his time.

I wouldn't mind all these changes if they actually had internal consistency like spouting off bullshit that Stannis was burning people in Season 2's introduction or forgetting about Cersei's kid with Robert despite Maggy the Frog's prophecy.
Or how they fucked over the Brotherhood Without Banners and made them into assholes. Edric Dayne provided invaluable insight into Jon's possible parentage to Arya and his faction is going to play a big part.

Ned's death hurt but it made sense, Doran and Roose's death was a complete what the fuck. Ramsay is so fucking boring compared to Roose, why do they think the audience enjoys watching an edgy psychopath?
It was annoying that Roose was reduced from a battlefield commander to some basement dwelling nerd whilst Ramsay got all the action.

Well the first problem is they can't write for shit. The dialogue is just fucking awful.
The second problem is the completely missed the point the character deaths in the series. They weren't done for le ebin twists.
If you look at Tywin, Ned, Robb, Joffery, Renly, etc. their deaths are the logical outcomes to huge build ups that have immediate consequences and impact to the story. Every character for a thousand miles reacts and is affected by those deaths.
When D&D kill characters, nobody gives a shit. There are no repercussions. The characters say ha nobody likes you or they don't say anything at all. Everybody just goes on with their day. It ultimately means nothing. That should give you a clue as to how shallow their writing is.
