Experimental film making
People praise A New Hope for the experimental film making because they liked the film, but deride the prequels for the same shit

Being experimental only gains you praise if the result turned out good

Its called technology you luddite. Every sane man will defend this. Now get back to touching yourself listening to Plinkett's heavy breathing.

I sure don't

There wasn't anything experimental about the prequels.
TPM had a big mix of practicals and CGI and it holds up very well still.
Lucas did all CGI sets on the sequels not to save money but to reduce the shoot time. They hold up like shit, all the CGI sets look god awful. They looked awful back then too.
The only thing he experimented with was digital film, and you know what, I'm glad he did. It kicked that industry in the ass to get moving to producing better digital cameras for movies. However, the all CGI sets set the effects industry years back. He basically made it ok for big budget movies to want more and more CGI.

Fucking no?
They only look awful due to the better shit that people are now seeing.
Its like gaming console graphics when people think the current generation's graphics is hot shit only to be trumped by the next one.

No, they looked fucking awful back then. People complained about the digital backdrops, they felt it was uncanny valley in many ways. I remember talking to one of my co-workers about how you could see the actors sliding around when the camera would pan in certain angles.
I was working at the time for a small 3D shop and I had been experimenting with virtual sets in 3DS Max. It was amateur shit, I didn't have camera tracking software. It was far too expensive for our studio and there was no free or open source alternatives back then.
Anyway I remember my co-worker laughing and telling me "holy shit and I thought your shitty comps were bad."
Yes they looked like shit back then, they still do now. I am specifically taking about the virtual set pieces, not talking about all of the CGI in general. I think the chase scene is still well done and that has lasted well, but those virtual sets. Fuck no.

I'm guessing you were too young to have been around the internet back then, or too young to remember seeing it when it first came out. Yes people did bitch about those fake backdrops. Just because you were 2 and don't remember shit doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Phantom menace has aged well, technically anyway compared to the others as it was shot on film. Whereas. Attack and revenge were shot on an early digital HD camera

Jar Jar Binks is literally the first CG character (as opposed to creature) integrated into a live action film.
