Daily TFA box office update

>UPDATE #1: Disney is estimating Star Wars: The Force Awakens brought in $37.3 million on Tuesday, enough for a new Tuesday record, topping The Amazing Spider-Man's $35 million opening day back in 2012. The film has now crossed $325 million domestically, becoming the fastest to ever do so as it dropped only 7% from its record-breaking Monday. Additionally, it added another $41.3 million internationally bringing its global cume to $689.4 million.

>The 7% drop is a bit off of Avatar's 1.83% Tuesday drop, which does adjust our previous calculations for the rest of the week based on Avatar's dailies. The results, should Star Wars follow Avatar's first week daily drops and increases would now look like this:

>Monday: $40.1 M (33.76% drop) / $288.1 M (actual)
>Tuesday: $37.3 M (7.01% drop) / $325.4 M (estimate)
>——- Wed-Sun projections based on Avatar first week dailies ——-
>Wednesday: $38.1 M (2.23% increase) / $363.5 M
>Thursday: $25.9 M (32.19% drop) / $389.4 M
>Friday: $53.6 M (107.11% increase) / $442.9 M
>Saturday: $65.6 M (22.43% increase) / $508.5 M
>Sunday: $56.2 M (14.24% drop) / $564.7 M ($175.3 M weekend)

Of course it matters you fucking idiots. Even if this movie ends up with a 40/60 split after China, if it makes a lofty $800m domestically that's only $1.2b overseas, not even enough to come close to Titanic's fucking 1997 gross. It was over before it began. Perhaps now you will realise the extent of James Cameron's unparalleled and unchallenged box office dominance.

TFA will never beat Avatar because it was a box office anomaly

>what did you mean by this anon?

Avatar's daily gross actually went up as the time went on. It started with really poor numbers but kept growing for months, something unprecedent.

TFA is literally the most hyped movie of recent history. It had its peak during the premiere last week - which is why it shattered the weekend record. From now on numbers will only go down, imo

>>
>>64013096
>Only reason why Avatar did well in the box office is because it was in theaters for months on end

It was in there that long because it was doing well, not the other way around. They keep a movie until tickets stop selling. People were buying tickets months after release due to word-of-mouth buzz, not a several hundred million dollar ad campaign which leads to great opening numbers then a steep drop off.
>>
>>64011888
They're talking about 7% of the highest grossing Monday on record going into the highest grossing Tuesday on record.

The drops are going to be bigger than Avatar because the money it's making is larger. 5.17% seems big but it's only because there's more places for Star Wars to go.

We need to wait another week to see if Star Wars has staying power, this week is Christmas so it doesn't even count because people will go to see the movie since nothing else is open around Christmas anyway.
>>

I only did it once and it was for Fellowship of the Ring. I was 12 and absolutely obsessed with the movie. I ended up seeing it 15 times in theaters. It's not common among my family and friends but I guess someone goes.

I understand you're accusing me of being "autistic" because you have to label people who don't want to see shitty movies as having disorders in order to justify being a stunted manchild.

Pathetic tBH. You're a mindless literal plebeian to Disney, Apple, Sony, etc. Time to head back to /v/.

>They said Fury Road was a flop when it made back a decent profit
It didn't flop, but it's gross was far from decent

Other than that you're absolutely right, but I don't see TFA beating Avatar. JW almost certainly, Titanic - probably.

Avatar's record is something else. Only 3D tickets (more expensive), massive hype/marketing campaign (not that TFA didn't have it)...

apparently, when you go to a therapist, to see if you're mentally sound, they ask if you and your family are raging plebs who watch kids' movies for fun. Obviously, that's how to diagnose proper mental health.

It needs 800M domestically to break even.

where are you pulling this number? post a source
>>
>>64014184
It actually needs something closer to 900M (450M for production + marketing) so there's no way it won't flop. Most people just don't care for Star Wars honestly, and this is clearly not a unmissable event like Avatar groundbreaking 3D was, that immediately conquered audiences overseas.

It needs to make $900 million worldwide to break even

They have already made everything back from merchandising

Actually it needs about 1.1 billion domestic to break even. I'm an expert on this
>>
>>64013415
True

The Foreign Box Office and The Domestic Box office are 1:1 right now the important thing is that other foreign markets don't drop off to quickly

We can say without a doubt that TFA will sell as many tickets as TPM, that's 700,000,000 dollars adjusted for inflation and today's average ticket price. If it could beat ANH which sold 130,000,000 tickets domestically, that's 1.1 Billion at the Box Office. Of course 77 is a lot different than now, A New Hope was able to be in theaters for 7 months and it had a lot of repeat viewings so who knows if that's possible to recreate.

Looking at China The Force Awakens is tracking better on social media than Fast 7 did(which grossed 390,000,000), despite /tv/ spending all day on a chinese ping-pong flipbook, they aren't the best at predicting box office numbers. "Experts" expect this movie to make more than 100 million dollars its first weekend in China. For reference, Fast 7 only made 70 million dollars its first weekend.

Looking at the Overall foreign gross for Jurassic World, the movie made 1 billion dollars with 200 million from China. This means 800,000,000 is a completely realistic total for SW in the foreign market sans China. This number is also about the same as what Avengers made without China and is consistent with other blockbusters.

Assuming a conservative estimate of somewhere between TPM (90 million tickets) and ANH(130 million tickets), at the average price of movies being $8.12 a ticket, we can expect TFA to make about 900 million dollars domestically. The previous number could be higher because we aren't taking into consideration that most releases of this movie are in IMAX or 3D.

Taking the also conservative foreign box office figure of Jurassic World, that's another 800 million.

Blockbuster in China in recent years always seem to clear about 200 million dollars, so 200 million is a reasonable low number for the box office, at it's best it could outdo fast 7 and make around 400 million
>>
>>64014640
But I'm not even counting that it needs to make 8b to return Disney's investment on LucasFilms.

Face it, flop of the century

Final Figures

(Super Conservative Figures:The film does equal to Phantom Menace): 700,000,000(Dom)+ 200,000,000(C) + 600,000,000(F)=1.5 bil(So like about the same as JW)

(Conservative Figures: Film does Better than TPM and worse than ANH): 900,000,000(Dom)+300,000,000(C) + 700,000,000(F)=1.9 bil(Close to TItanic, probably gonna beat it)

(Unlikely Figures: Film does the same as ANH and beats F7 in China) 1,100,000,000(Dom)+400,000,000(C) + 800,000,000(F) = 2.3 bil

Based on all my math I don't know if Star Wars can dethrone Avatar, SK and Japan were 250,000,000 dollars of Avatar gross and the movie just isn't performing as well there. Essentially Star wars would have to blow China the fuck out completely to take on Cameron. The Asian markets were too important to Avatar, Star Wars is already losing in those South Asian markets it needs.

Essentially this boils down once again to staying power, China is not where we should be looking instead we should focus on the overall foreign box office. That's where Avatar made it's real cash. To win Star Wars needs to keep South Asian And European countries coming back to the theater week after week.

Furious 7 made $182m opening weekend in China.
>>
>>64012002

>>

Avatar is only the 9th highest grossing film in China. Furious 7 is the 2nd highest. I don't think it's impossible to beat.

That's why they're doomed. It's not a go see 3 times movie, maybe twice if you're a 34 year old virgin. Some dumb cartoon will take over by January

Who gives a shit if dog-eating gooks even bother to watch these movies?

Western markets should be all that matter, who gives a damn what those rapists even think.
>>
>>64015015
>Star wars would have to blow China the fuck out
>China is not where we should be looking instead we should focus on the overall foreign box office

Whoops made a mistake here, I didn't look at the Avatar Foreign totals till the end of my post so ignore these two statements together.

The overall foreign market is more important than China

>>64015104
What's number 1? I couldn't figure it out, BOM isn't that intuitive when it comes to looking at foreign totals.

Also that's why I think 300,000,000 is a reasonable estimate, we just can't expect the movie to make 1 billion in China alone, the rest of the Foreign Box Office is crucial here.

>>64015015
Apr. 6–12 1 $63,500,000 - $63,500,000 0
Apr. 13–19 1 $182,400,00

I see the number your referring to, it says that Fast made 182 mil on the general page but when you click on it to see the week by week total the first week says 64 mil. So that's why I have the wrong number there, thanks for the correction.

I mean doomed isn't really the right word, the film will still cross 2 billion dollars easily. It's just not going to beat Avatar.

As >>64012698 said, many people thought this movie would bomb when it's tracking to be the second highest grossing movie of all time.
>>
>>64015362
Monster Hunt/Furious 7 are the highest-grossing film of all time in China. Avatar is #8 and the only western movie in the top 40 all-time highest-grossing in China to be released before 2013, aside from Transformers (2011, #13), Titanic's 3D rerelease (2012, #17), and MI: Ghost Protocol (2012, #38).

It won't even beat Titanic, get your head out of your ass. That movie had half the female population going to see it 5 times.

Hello.

I've got a keen, fresh insight.

I hate TFA. It's an awful glib facsimile

BUT

I want it to beat all the avatarfags.

Anyone else in my boat?

>>64015511
>I mean doomed isn't really the right word, the film will still cross 2 billion dollars easily. It's just not going to beat Avatar.

The only reason it will cross Titanic is if it does exceptionally well in China. Anything above it is already out of the question.
>>
>>64015362
Yes, and considering China is not enthusiastic over Star Wars I can't see it making anything above Fast numbers. It will follow trend of other asian markets and underperform there.

Even Titanic is safe at this point. In the other hand Star Wars flop is inevitable, it has already peaked in performance and there's nothing indicating it'll have good legs like Phantom Menace did.

Realistically it will drop considerably after christmas holiday and make 2B in the least conservative of predictions.

I don't get why you people keep riding on China, Look at Avatar and Titanic. China was a lot of the money for Avatar but the more important factor for both those movies was the overall foreign market. The movies made pretty good money during opening week in every country they premiered in, and week after week they kept making that cash. Consistency is more important than a Chinese blowout, while Star Wars isn't doing amazingly in South Korea and Japan, neither did Avatar on it's release.

Avatar premiered to half of TFA opening weekend in Japan, it made 7 million dollars first weekend and went on to gross 170 million dollars.

We don't have enough data to make remarks on consistency, in two weeks we'll know if people are going to keep coming back and then everyone can scream flop.

>>64015786
>nothing indicating it'll have good legs like Phantom Menace did.

It's broken every single day record for sales except Saturday so far, adjusting for inflation in 5 days TFA is at half the box office for a Phantom Menace. Nearly 45 million people in the United States have seen the movie in 5 days and you think it's a stretch for it to sell 45 million more tickets over the next month and a half it'll probably be in theaters for?

/tv/ armchair analyst people.
