They're literally just "updating" the OT for modern audiences. It's not as much about being afraid to try out new ideas, as it is trying to continue selling the same brand all over again with a new coat of paint on it.

It's actually kind of a smart idea, because by carving it into a planet instead of making an artificial one, you don't need that pesky thermal exhaust port that X-Wings keep firing into.

Here's a more original plot, Luke is an old mentor to the kids, he dies fighting Kylo Ren who is trying to drop a meteor on an important planet, In the end the combined will of all the people makes the force pull the meteor back and kylo ren dies while this happens due to the force of the force, everyone else comes to understand each other and there is peace in the galaxy for the rest of eternity and they never make one of these shitty movies again
