Will they ever remove the Sonic Screwdriver/Shades for a series?

It seems like an obvious thing to do, they've done it before, it opens up new writing challenges, and the last episodes proves that Dr Who can use his ingenuity to work around problems rather than zapping a magic wand at them.

Is it just forever a part of Doctor Who now (with the odd variation here and there), or is it something that can be removed for a while? I mean, they keep forgetting the psychic paper exists (even though it has just as much OP potential).

"I think Doctor Who is a corkingly brilliant idea. The recasting idea is brilliant. I think the actual structure, the actual format is as good as anything that's ever been done. His character, his TARDIS, all that stuff is so good it can even stand being done not terribly well - as one has to concede it was done. I simply mean the basic principles of it some of the moments or ideas are so great they can dupe you into believing the program was better than it really was. It was actually pretty shabby a lot of the time, which is a shame. There was some very good stuff over twenty five years, but there wasn't enough. Doctor Who was not limited merely by the limitations of the times or the styles that were prevalent then. It was limited by the relatively meager talent of the people who were working on it. Mostly they were middle-of-the-range hacks who were not going to go on to do much else. The hit rate for the 26 years is not high enough... There are people who have worked on Doctor Who who have gone on to great things, who are great talents, like Douglas Adams. I just think most of the people thought this was going to be the big moment of their lives which is a shame. As a television format: Doctor Who equals anything. Unless I chose my episodes very carefully, I couldn't sit anybody I work with in television down in front of Doctor Who and say 'watch this, this is a great show."

Strange how a lot of this still applies today now that he's running it.

I don't think its that great of an idea anyways. I always hear so many arguments about how destroying the Sonic will improve the writing so much but...did it? I mean, Davison's season after the sonic was destroyed sucked, the next season was alright but only Caves and Turlough were truly standout ideas, a bunch of Colin's first season was dreck(and this is coming from someone who legitimately enjoys about 70% of it).

I mean, did the writers rise to the occasion by destroying the Sonic? The only other mutually loved decision from that series afterwards was killing Adric, and one could argue killing off Adric was a much better idea than ditching the Sonic.

Shit writing is gonna be shit no matter what happens, but at least with it we can wave away some of the technobabble and just get on with a show. Besides, is it really more exciting to watch the Doctor rewire an electronic door while the monster of the week stumbles towards them? Arguably i like the idea of having the doctor fucking around with his infallible sonic because he can't get the setting right until the last second rather than watching him be as mundane as an elevator repair man for exactly the same amount of time.

The more people outside the BBC (fans, media etc) who support Capaldi and the fact that he is a lifelong fan he may decide to throw his weight around if he wants it. Now that will be great for the show but not for the BBC they will loose some control and and don't think they will let that happen. In my view anyway
>>
>>63299197
Listen to the audio reconstructions and he is right - you can hear the fluffing of the lines etc
But they were put out at such a rate it's no surprise - the difference is old soap episodes dot get rerun the same way
Interesting what if - what if yellow arc of fragrance (which was recently recorded by BF but never actually done in the series itself) had been the 2nd serial as planned? It's way more esoteric than most of the cod monster serials
>>

The proposed second story wasn't The Fragile Yellow Arc of Fragrance, it was The Masters of Luxor.
If it had been the second story, the characters might have developed a bit differently; apparently, it originally had a big religous subtext, and the Doctor was clearly presented as a believer. It's a pity Big Finish removed it from their version, I should probably read the scripts one day.
Fragile Yellow Arc was never even seriously considered for production, as far as I know.

so that half-human thing.

I don't really care for it I'd rather keep the Doctor fully alien. at this point I don't think I would mind if they went that way.

There's an interpretation of canon that has a stance that something is the case until its retconed/explained later. So I guess he is half human, whether I like it or not.

I think it might be an interesting twist to establish that his mother is human but not really, she something else.
>>
>>63303544
good point, I can only guess that UNIT showed up and sorted it out and did that accepting Rigsy wouldn't tell them the truth.
>>
>>63303790
What if he's half time Lord half some other alien?

>>63303840
I like that but now i'm thinking if his mother is something even more alien than Gallifreyian it might go into the Messianic territory.

Will they ever touch on this?

I mean as forgetful or procrastinating as the Doctor is, he's gotta show up at some point to break the news even if he has to lie.

I feel like dealing with the aftermath of a companion death in such a way by taking a whole episode to deal with it could be a fun idea. Not like The Snowmen with the Emo Doctor, but with him trying to decide what to tell people and how to go about it and where to go from there.

Lads, that was probably the best episode of NuWho, and one of the best in the show's entire run. I was kind of giving up hope on Moffat as a showrunner. But damn. That episode was something else. I know this week's episode could never top last week's. Moffat would have to pull another Blink, Girl in the Fireplace, or Heaven Sent out of his ass to compete. This is the biggest problem with Doctor Who finales and Moffat finales especially. The first part is always better than the second part. I'm hoping that while Hell Bent might be a step down, it's not disappointing like Death in Heaven was.

Still, the Christmas special afterwards is already shaping up to be one of the worst of the Moffat era, and I'm betting it will be as bad as The Doctor The Widow and The Wardrobe

I recently started dating a girl that's really into this show, but I've only seen like 3 episodes. It seems good, but there's just so many seasons and it has such a big following that getting into it seems a little overwhelming. Where should I star, what season is best for a newfag to get into it without getting lost with all the backstories and stuff?

>tldr: want to start watching, where is the best place to begging?
>>

Season 5, The Eleventh Hour. It was a soft reboot with an entirely new main cast and new showrunner, which makes it a good entry position

If you want to start with the current main actor Peter Capaldi you could start with Deep Breath, but it's nowhere near as forgiving to new viewers
>>
>>63304325
1) Go into the show assuming that every episode you watch will be shit. This way you're not disappointed and you will be very pleasantly surprised often enough.

2) This show is shit and I say this as one of its biggest fans.

3) By this point you might as well not bother starting in 2005 or 1963 or any other point. There are a few options now that will get you all caught up to the main story. First option is to start in 2011 with "The Eleventh Hour" and work your way to the present. There's several seasons and specials to get through so it will take a bit to catch up and you have to get through Series 6 and 7 which /who/ doesn't really like that much.

Another option is to start with "The Name of the Doctor" and continue on which is much more recent. This is kind of a rocky option but it gives you backstory while getting you to the new stuff. You'll be tossed into the end of a story arc which leads into the new one. You also get to see many different Doctors in this period. 8th, War Doctor, 10th, 11th and 12th.

Maybe but there is a stark difference. While on a whole, virgin watchers will be able to adjust to watching it from 2005. While asking them to start watching a sci-fi show from 1963 is a huge culture shock. 60's/70's/80's Sci-fi is not for everyone. That and show has a almost complete opposite pace.

That anon was put off by how many seasons there are. The Eleventh Hour is the most recent jumping-off episode. Five and a half seasons is still longer than many TV shows last, there's enough to catch up with without slapping the four and a half seasons that came before on top of it.
The best thing about that episode being almost a reboot is that you can watch from The Eleventh Hour to Heaven Sent without getting too many spoilers about what came before, so you can always go back and start from Hartnell, or Pertwee, or McGann, or Eccleston if you're interested.
>>
Moff's making it sound like S10 is going to become the new jumping off episode
I wonder how much things will change
>>
>>63305903
The answers aren't too bad. The suggested

The Three Doctors > The Deadly Assassin > The Invasion of Time > The Arc of Infinity > The Five Doctors

is as good of a Gallifrey crash course you could hope for from Classic Who. Honestly you could just do The Deadly Assassin > The Five Doctors; the Omega stuff is ancillary. The Brain of Morbius would be good but made most sense before The Night of the Doctor; by now people get Karn in NewWho.
>>
>>63305953
And also running the risk of getting your mind warped.. If the seasons were 26 episodes long I would agree with you but they re not. Otherwise I would've said start fro Hartnell or Pertwee with their serials lasting between 45-20 episode per season. 13 episodes per season is nothing to be put off by and is not an excuse in my eyes.

As for The Eleventh hour being a "re-boot" well ideally it shouldn't have been. But there was a change of Doctor, a change of showrunner and a change of direction and that is just how it went. I hate the lack of references between the 10th and 11th most of the continuity was lost. The whole thing is not natural and doesn't sit right.

I still think the only place you should start from in Nu-Who is Season One.
>>

M8, for most of Classic Who episode were about half as long as NuWho ones. 26 episodes of Pertwee is pretty much the same as 13 episodes of Eccleston. And the seasons only get shorter as it goes on, a season of McCoy is about as long as Series 6A.
The RTD era is 60 episodes long, and Moffat will reach 70 with the next Christmas special. It's not as long as some other shows, but it's nothing to scoff at.

Eh. I really strongly feel like it's a bad starting point. Series 5 is an awful introduction to the Daleks, Time War, regeneration, etc. Series 1 is a much better intro.
>>
>>63306628
because life gets in the way of fiddling with devices

>>
>>63305374

Nope. Watching from Ecclestone is watching from where Doctor Who began its current form. Yes it's canon from 1963 but the current pacing, story arcs and so on run from Ecclestone. The Time War, referenced again in the coming episode, was mentioned by Ecclestone right the way back at the start of Rose. Also what the other anon said - watching from 2005 is far more achievable than watching from 1963. Finally, I'm always nonplussed when fans recommend wiping out the ninth and tenth doctors. They were brilliant. The seasons aren't that long so it's not that big a deal to watch it from 2005.

I would argue that the beginning of the moff era is where doctor who began its most current form. The execution and tone of the RTD and moff eras are significantly different
>>
>>63307070
>The execution and tone of the RTD and moff eras are significantly different

Superficially. It's clearly the same show. It uses the same structure, etc. The mythology is laid out from Series 1, not series 5. Try using Victory of the Daleks as the introduction of Daleks for a newbie, go on. You honestly think it works better than Dalek? Series 5 doesn't even set up the Time War, a huge part of NewWho.
>>
>>63307087

I don't disagree with you about those, I'm just questioning the use of 'current form'

But I definitely see where you're coming from and agree that RTDwho does a better job of establishing lore
>>
Here's what's Moffat is scared of having changed.

When the Doctor was young, when he looked into the Untempered Schism, he saw Clara telling him: "Run, run you clever boy and remember". That's just it. No big deal.
>>
>>63307087
My friend used Victory as an introduction to Who.

She thinks we're all retarded.
>>
>>63307105
Fair enough anon. I do agree that Series 5 is a good starting point (certainly better than Series 7 or somethijng), I just really think Series 1 works better :)

>>63307109
That would be a bit lame but fine

>>63307111
Doesn't surprise me, it's awful and such a terrible introduction for the daleks. If someone insists with starting on Series 5 they should at least watch Eccleston's Dalek for an introduction to them (the finale is also a great dalek ep).
>>
>>63307109

oh fuck

>>
>>63307151
It's a decent first Dalek episode, but Dalek is literally a 10/10 and much better. Deep Breath is also a terrible first episode. Starting with Series 8 is bad idea.
>>
>>63306936
>Nope. Watching from Ecclestone is watching from where Doctor Who began its current form. Yes it's canon from 1963 but the current pacing, story arcs and so on run from Ecclestone. That isn't what you said though. You said that watching from 2010 is discounting Tennant and Eccleston (and it isn't, as I said it's very easy to go back and catch up with the earlier seasons).
So, either watching from 2005 is discounting the Doctors from Hartnell to McGann or watching from 2010 is not discounting the previous NuWho Doctors.
We can argue on exactly how good S5 is as a starting point, but starting from there does not mean throwing the whole of the RTD era in the trash.
>>
>>63307201
Everything has its time anon, eventually it will just be a distant memory. I'm sorry that happened for you.

>>63307237
NewWho isn't Classic Who; jumping around doesn't make as much sense (I'm not the guy you're talking to but chiming in). There's a natural development from Series 1 to 4, 5 to 7, and 8 to 9; it's not like Classic Who where companions leaving was pretty much the only contijnuity sstuff

>up until now we only ever see him from behind, this continues
>he walks home, his walking isn't a drunk style, but he seems distracted
>pauses outside an old junkyard, means against the gate to catch his breath
>as he gets up, a flashing light inside the junkyard
>he slightly turns towards it, still can't see his face, but he walks away from it
>tardis noise starts, the old man stops completely
>cautiously approaches the junkyard, still a behind shot
>it's now him standing in front of the tardis, then the door opens, and capaldi steps out, clearly upset (clothes rumpled, hair messed up, bags under eyes, etc.)
>“hello chesterfield”, he says as he tears up
>close up of a hug between them, both crying
>at the same time they say “she's gone”, Ian meaning barb, 12 meaning Clara

Don't look at me man, I made the three posts previous to you.

What do I want? To be surprised, which The Moff is generally good at doing. Even Gatiss has started to almost surprise me these days by turning out decent scripts; I liked Sleep No More on second viewing a hell of a lot more, you should try it again.

So I'm writing this script about the Doctor, Clara and Missy being pursued by a woman who claims she has Intel that someone is going to put a bounty on their heads and she's hunting them before the bounty is announced so she can get them first. He'd be thinking of ways to block such searches and how to trace them back to who was tracing him. Is that the sort of tracing you mean?
