I was told that they would just find some other place for it down the road. But I know that when they eventually make the switch to Maya, everything Monty and I worked so hard to build up will become unusable and therefore be thrown into the garbage.
Almost every account I've read on Poser vs Maya is that Poser is so confusing/difficult to work with, and the only reason Monty was so proficient in it was because he'd learnt literally every cheat and keyboard shortcut possible for it.

After reading it all, it really is a dick move to pull the rug out from under him like that. Everyone knows that people will still watch the next volume, but some with a bitter taste towards it. Not to mention good luck finding people to pay anymore sponsorships for early viewing. Definitely fuck that shit. I was patient for each episode last volume, I can be just as much next time around.

Throwing shit together, no Storyboarding, no layouts vs traditional storyboarding preplanning etc (remember that tweet that gray mentioned how this was the firs time an episode has been fully scripted and storyboarded? Now we know why
Poser vs Maya
Shane admitting that monty and them wanted to take back the rwby IP and form their own studio. if RT got a whiff of that, no wonder they came down on Shane super hard like that, and also explains the super abrupt departure mid volume. I knew something bad went down, just not this bad.
Monty trying to stay completely within his own story/vision and not let anyone else modify/amend/touch it. Granted creative control is an important thing, but not at the expense of shutting out an entire team there to help you.
Overall the whole thing makes everyone look bad, RT most of all due to how they pulled the rug out from him and cut him and Sheena out completely, but also in the way that both parties couldn't adapt for mutual benefit.
Post yfw the actress of your're waifu takes the side of Shane/Sheena and instead of just replacing the VA, they write them out of the show immediately .

The simple fact is that Monty himself was not a good story teller. He created a neat little world, filled it full of characters, but without other people reigning him in, RWBY would be far more convoluted than it already is.
As someone who also wields enough autism to have multiple little worlds in his head, I know how these things work. You have an over-arching theme, a bunch of characters, a super well thought out final boss fight, and nothing of value in between.
Those "20 Volumes" worth of notes? I would bet a testicle that some of those are less than bare bones, especially the ones in the early middle.

And V18-20 take up a composition notebook each. I know:

But the dude was an animator and world-builder first-and foremost. Linking events together was best left to other folks, and despite our hate boner for them, I think M&K may just be capable of that.
Shane was a good guy, and probably got a shit deal, but he's riding Monty's dick so hard he's forgetting that it doesn't matter how epic you're fights are if there's no plot for anyone to give a fuck about.

Yeah, the 2015 section really drives this home. This confirms the scuttlebutt about how Monty doggedly absolutely refused to use maya, going so far as to make "skins" for poser to imitate the Maya toolset with all the new animators they brought in. I don't like how RT handled things, but it's showing more and more like an Oil+Water scenario more than anything else. I imagine if anything newer volumes will probably have a smoother and faster production cycle with everything done the RT way I guess. Whether that leads to an uptick in quality, that I'm not so sure.

When the fine bros controversy erupted Burnie made a comment how if you apologize in social media these days, people seem to attack you more viciously than if you had left it alone. Now granted, this is one of their hottest properties right now and this coming out so soon before RTX, i'm sure it's going to come up. But I bet anything they'll do everything in their power to ignore or deflect any inquiry or comment about this as much as humanly possible or speak in vague platitudes about how they're "committed to honoring Monty's vision" or something and that Shane and Sheena had "creative differences" and they wish them all the best etc.

Nah that was Monty's doing. He always was a workaholic, shane even admits it. Working 36 hour days, no sleep, tons of caffeiene and bad food. Poor guy probably was less than a decade away from a heart attack. Shane's idea of a vacation was to spend an entire weekend at the RT office animating personal projects non-stop. It was only a matter of time before he suffered some major health problem, the allergy thing just sort of happened out of left field really.

That sounds much more to me like a passing conversation that got no real consideration. Getting back an IP like that is a massive undertaking they would likely never pull off, and the quality drop would be hilariously off putting to everyone but the most devoted fans.

Couple of months ago, a big shitstorm errupted with two brothers who run the "react" channel on youtube. They're the guys who put out all those "KIDS REACT TO AN ORIGINAL GAMEBOY AHMAHGERD!!!"
Anyhow they tried to trademark "react" and create a "partnership" program that would basically require you to join their channel/network if you wanted to make any kind of react videos. They backtracked hardcore after the backlash and they discussed it at length on the RT podcast and that's where burnie made the observation when the fine bros made the apology video.

Most people, especially new animators, would find it hard to work without proper storyboarding and direction.
I'm not saying the way RT does things is not bullshit, but we're talking about two extremes here — no direction at all at one side and a fucking mess of a work process on the other.

Yeah you know i've been going through that RT forums thread and the reddit thread and it's echoing what a lot of folks here are saying. After the initial OHMG WTF shock, a lot more folks are coming out and saying that it's not a cut and dry 100% RT are evil thing. The fact taht Shane admitted Monty had "his way" that clashed with RT kinda paints him into a corner of "clashing work ethic" and that's kind of hard to justify when in the end you have to put out something.

But the fights suffered, I remember the outcry once we all realized that vol. 3 had the most and worst instances of reused animation. It wasn't "efficient." It was Lazy as fuck.
Now. Shane sperging out over an old system undoubtedly did hinder things. But so did RT adding a shitload of red tape and ignoring a senior animator, even Monty himself, when it came to the show's content.

It's the other way around man. Shane would do a scene "monty's" way repeatedly ignoring or avoiding the stuff that the other animators wanted to do, then ended up having it either completely scrapped or having it be redone. He's not the grand poobah of a project, his word/desires aren't law, and when you're part of a team, you have to do some give and take to make the team work.
Plus yes Monty's work ethic is actually bad. Working as long as he did and as hard as he did is a surefire recipe for burnout and mental/physical problems. It's why so many companies freak out about work life balance (well they could do more, but they're at least paying lip service to it now) now. Plus the fact he avoided upgrading or working with new tools that the entire rest of the staff was using was bound to come to a head at some point.

Like the frame thing, he did it specifically to help out the editors and give them some room to work with, but the producers made him redo entire scenes so that it was "correct" and they wouldn't need to render those frames later on.

I think the problem is, there was no give. Like if they had forced those kind of changes while Monty was alive, he'd have told them to fuck off and had the pull to have his way. But because Shane didn't have his leeway he couldn't do anything, and the constrictions and changes so soon after Monty's death really kicked him too.

Monty did not want to use a storyboard and plan things? That's stupid. It works for short things, but if you want to do something that runs for many years, you need a storyboard, or you will just create a big mess that is impossible to undo.
