These 2 I actually kinda believe cause I heard this from people during some tfcon panels a few years back.

Not my pic I posted (obviously), but I own the black Universe version and I agree.

I actually popped all the mammoth pieces off the ball joints from the delicious robotty center, but the center wasn't all that delicious. Kinda scrawny looking, really.

Posed well, it's a pretty imposing figure, though.

Thats just the entire BW line more or less. The upside being they had good articulation for their time, downside being 99% of them were shellformers.

I have a massive soft spot for Transformers and not much else in terms of action figures. I'm looking to start a small collection of my favorite figures, both from childhood and through the ages. (I have the original G1 figures in my parent's basement somewhere, so that's mostly covered)

Is $5000 a good amount to start?

On my list is about 7 MP figures, most expensive being OP (both MP10 & MP4) and Starscream. I have a dozen CHUG figures, the 3 RID brothers, the top tier movie figures from each toy line (trilogy only) and Generations Metroplex as a nice figure to tower over the others and center the collection sort of. I'm thinking of getting about 50 figures, currently at 39. That means I can spend an average of $100 on each figure.

I'd also love suggestions, I've taken interest in the more recent figures (CW, Generations, etc.)
>>
>>5785281
Main reason I knew about most of the TR shit months before even Wave 2 was revealed was cause I talked to this guy during a small toy show that knew a guy from the production teams and he was given the prototype slides and he was just showing it to everybody around. I was just scared to ask for the slides or face any legal consequences if I felt like leaking them myself if I did get them.

>small collection

Ha ha holy fucking shit dude, $5000 will buy you fucking anything thats not completely retarded.

You might want to look in the 3P thread too and ask about stuff, particularly any favorites you might have.

Also, Generations Springer should be the first thing you buy. He's cheap as Hell still ($20-30 tops) and an amazing figure.

I'd personally recommend MP-28 and Generations Arcee too, because they're both great figures.
>>
>>5785287
$5k is more than enough unless you're crazy enough to hunt them with boxes. Also with that 5k you should have just spent like $500 and went to TFcon this year and spent the remaining on the actual toys you want.
>>
>>5785293
>Generations Springer
seconded
>>
>>5785295

I don't think my entire collection is worth 5k and I've got a good amount of 3P figures. 5k is serious fucking bank to be spending on toys.
>>
>>5785293
This, if you've got a budget like that you should look into 3P. Also seconding the gen Springer.
>>
>>5785239
Something red?
>>
>>5785307
To clarify, I'm not totally sure how much of a complimentary color this is but it'd help make a nice sentai esque color team, with onslaught being blue, brawl being green, swindle yellow, etc.
>>
Why do I like Pretenders so much?

Idiosyncratic, lanky robots with oversized heads that transform into the least coherent vehicle modes ever, and the bulky, inarticulate shells. And yet something about them makes me feel giddy.

>>5785295
I'll make sure to check out TFcon next year, looks promising.

>>5785301
Haha yeah, I wasn't sure how much would be sufficient, but if I have a lot left over I'll consider expanding my collection.

>>5785303
I'll look into 3P, there will probably be some figures ill be dropping (movie specifically) if the 3P has more fulfilling accuracy, or just overall better than Hasbro/Takara.
>>
>>5785321

Funny thing about Gen. Arcee, is that is her first official figure ever to boot. It was made by a fan turned designer who got picked up because he made a garage kit Arcee that got HasTak's attention.

The Takara version has a more cartoon accurate color if that matters to you, I only own the Gen. version.
>>
>>5785321

Wait for the Titans Return figure to come out this year instead of buying the old one. It's incredibly dated.

At least, I hope he's talking about MP28. MP28 is amazing.

I almost feel bad I use him as the butt of 90% of the dumb shit I post here.
>>
>>5785329
I would argue that Generations Hot Rod is still a pretty solid figure, dated or not.

Still, with money to burn, why not get whichever appeals to him? The TR one will be a headmaster, of course. Not really accurate to anything.
>>
>>5785321
Honestly I think you're better off with one of the Prime bike Arcees, since budget isn't an issue. Just make sure to get the 1st edition and not the later PRID release.
>>
>>5785301
Some of my stuff personally are already $150~500 per pop(realistically if I go by second market prices that people are actually willing to pay that much for--for the same condition I have them in right now), but I rarely pay full price for anything cause I got middlemen that find me stuff for dirt cheap locally in Japan or if its local to my area I usually look for people who want to get rid of their collections through craigslist/kijiji cause that is also an easy place to find stuff that I wouldn't pay for on ebay or any place else just cause they would cost an arm and a leg from those places.
>>

Thanks a lot, John "Beyond G1 Mistakes Abound" Warden, you fucking faggot.
>>
>>5785321
Get the Takara Arcee since that's closer to her cartoon/anime apperance and comes in a collectible box that looks really nice, also that Arcee is literally the first G1 Arcee we got that only took about 30 years before it actually got made.
>>

>>5785329
>>5785335
Yeah, I was talking about MP28, though there's something about his classics mold that I like. I think it's just the neutrality of it.

>>5785338
I loved the Prime series but I'm not a big fan of the style of the figures, with some of the decepticons as an exception.
>>
>>5785351
Why are you assuming it's 3p? My G1 reissue fortmax is easily $300~450 easily now and I do own an SDCC Metroplex and Devastators that also floats around $250~350 as well and I got a bunch of G1 stuff and G1 Reissues and I also collect vintage Sentai Mechas on top of all of that.
>>
>>5785359

To give you an idea of how much you probably overbudgeted, those 3 MP figures in your pic probably won't cost more than $250 altogether, and that might be stretching it.

Well, unless you get interested in 3P combiners. Those fuckers weigh in at around $600 a pop for a full team.
>>

Shop around! Any online seller you can imagine. For most MP's, well, they don't have US releases, just Japanese ones, so check Japanese sellers like amiami or HLJ first, you'll probably save yourself some dosh that way.

Always check eBay and Amazon just in case, but! Beware knockoff's, if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

It also never hurts to check Big Bad Toy Store, or TF Source, or Chosen Prime, or Toy Dojo, or...Etc. Like for example, Gen. Arcee a lot of people sell for $30 because "Fuck you, thats why". On BBTS you should still be able to get her in a 2-pack with Chromia for $30. Same price, but you're getting 2 figures, and Chromia ain't bad at all.

>>
>>5785371

Oh, and just to let you know, if you want an MP Soundwave, it's gonna be costly. He was one of the most scalped MP figures by a long shot.

And if you want a G1 gun style MP Megatron, you'll probably have to nab the 3P Apolloyon figure or wait a while for a new 3P gun Megs, since the official MP Megs is pretty shitty and old, and Apollon is...A good try, but a very finicky to transform figure.
>>
>>5785381
He and onslaught are the only ones I want from that set just for their colors. Hasbro vortex is being used for my galvatronus, but the takara version would probably work better.
>>
>>5785395
I haven't even opened all the LG fembots I own and I own 4. I've been itching to open them but I really don't want to since they all look so nice in their boxes.
>>
>>5785371

Oh, and one thing to remember: Outside of the MP line starting at MP-10, very little in Transformers scales properly. The MP line from MP10 onward is trying hard to be in proper scale (and still doesn't quite nail it at times because toys aren't made out of magic and nanomachines).

If you're bothered by not having accurate scale, Transformers is gonna send you into fits because very few figures scale with one another in canon appropriate ways.
>>
>>5785399
I leave them MISB because I only get the high from buying them. I stop giving a shit afterwards. It sucks, but that's the way I turned out.

I don't even transform the loose toys I get anymore. I'm just like "yay, I got it." and then I throw it in my box and forget about it.

The MISB and meme stuff are the ones I don't really buy to play with but buy to get and just throw in my shelf after transforming it once or twice or for the MISB put in my closet till I can get a new shelf to display them. Personally I don't feel the need to constantly play with them like a 5 year old to appreciate them.

Here's a scenario for you guys. There's a new, completely original Transformers series coming out, and for some reason you've been tasked with picking Megatron's alt mode. The only limitations are that it must be at least based on a real thing, it cannot be a man-portable gun (for obvious reasons) or a traditional tank (because HasTak feels it's been done too much). What do you choose?

I'd pick a Hind gunship myself. It's big, it's brutal looking, it's Russian and it's practically a flying tank in and of itself.

>>
>>5785850
There is a lazy but safe way of doing it, you may leave out the first step if what it'll do bothers you

>use a can of model paint in CLEAR GLOSS over the head
>use a pot of clear acrylic red paint and a very small brush apply over the section to make it a visor
>dot it on until safe
>because its very small thinning isn't necessary unless you want to repaint the entire body
>spray again in clear gloss

Alternative method

>using a sharpy in red/gundam marker in metallic red (GM16) color in that section until happy
>for best results in gundam marker test on paper until ink flows so you don't splash the entire face

And the best method

>buy the legends version

Either way it'll cost money and buying a 3p accessory for something an official version does seems still when the item will no doubt cost too much and shipping is always a factor.

Your call anon

The whole line between either is shitty, from all I'm aware of it got the ball rolling with the whole toy repaint thing.

Hasbro's are cheaper on the deco side but they homage g1 toys, they're aimed for the domestic market under the assumption kids are going to play with them with little sprinkles of nostalgia for their parents who may recognize the characters.

Takara's are more lavish in deco side and (usually) homage the cartoons/anime with retools done in the sake of japanese autism since its expected adults are going to leap onto these (I mean shit legends nightbird, you can't sell something with that much paint to a child).

The sad fact is QC issues are shared between them since they do use the same factories, I used to bitch on about how shitty hasbro is (hasbro mp's having crap transformation qc, paint apps being lazier, then the toys with fuck all deco) but after my experiences with takara they're exactly the same, its just opinions on deco and remolds that decide what we end up going for.

The sad part is takara's cost more due to exportation and thus cop alot of unnecessary flak, the native audience would of already kicked the shit with UW bruticus, and ours gets little flak due to opinions on deco/japanese thinking our one sucks shit because lack of paint

Therefore we're in a shit "hobby" and should quit, but we won't because we're exactly what either company wants

Another tip is to cover the parts you don't want painted with tape, just in case you slip with the brush.

I might try this out, or just wait for the upcoming Krok retool.
>>
>>5785867
Tape works but with the smallest of brushes you don't need it.

Sticky tack works too, I've had less bleed that way, but in terms of effectiveness it can be subjective (I prefer to mess with a pliable substance over something I need to keep cutting until I get it right)

Your call otherwise, I'm not familiar with krok but who knows, he might look great

I just love how the truck mode looks. With all the solar panels, ludicrously oversized fuel tanks, rocket boosters and the cannon mounted as some kind of crazy engine he looks like he was designed in the 90s. EXTREEEEEEME. What's not quite so cool is the worrying crack in the trailer hitch (where the gun plugs in) but it's not like it's a load-bearing piece (like a combiner port or a hip joint) so with careful handling it should be fine.
