For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Airbrush noob here, got a pretty nice old double action aztek from a friend for free, now I need some kind of compressor. The thing is my dad has a pretty heavy duty 150 psi compressor for a nail gun (porter-cable brad nailer) so I was wondering if it's possible to use that thing for airbrushing, I know I'd need an adapter and that you ideally want to be doing airbrushing around 10-20 psi but I'm not sure the thing goes that low easily.

He's got some added panels and a visor thing over the eyes. It's the Origin version of the RX-78-1. It dies killing a zaku at side seven at the start of the manga. Basically he hit the Zakus reactor with a beam which caused it to go critical and in Origin that's what blows a hole in the colony.

Kotobukiya has some, and I think Wave Corporation or someone else does too. I've seen them in green, yellow and red at Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera all the time.

But remember Kotobukiya is like somewhere in between 1/144 and 1/100. At the Mandarake in Nakano there's a whole bin of weapon parts, all kinds of beam sabers. If you have a friend in Tokyo they could pick up some for like a dollar. It'd probably be less than that to ship it to you in an envelope.

The point is that it's an easy thing to do for beginners, so they can be eased into more complex things
>>
>>5696032
You can do it; the big problem you might encounter will be what kind of reading you can get off the regulator's gauge more than the reg itself. Noise might or might not be an issue. Look out if it's an oiled compressor (rather tha an oilless one); I think the oil they use for those is supposed to be inert (IE won't react with paint), but could be wrong.
>>
>>5696584
The gauge and regulator on most hardware compressors are notoriously inaccurate, if you're gonna use one you need a proper low pressure regulator that only does like 5-30psi

>>

And the special color baselard.

I hope dalong adds FAG one day.
>>
>>5696792
well, not all acrylic paints are the same medium, some are water based, some alcohol based, some other things. enamels are the same way, not all have the same medium. i assume there is a small number of acrylic paints that use the same or similar medium to enamel paints, so thus the thinners can be used for both.

I'm interested in shopping around for different garage kits for either movie props, or just cool resin models and sculptures

What sites should I be looking at for this sort of thing?
>>
>>5696406
I think he's doing some light weathering on the kit

basically adding in pannel lines as normal, then going over with a thinned out wash before removing the excess paint with the q-tip
>>
>>5696792

are you sure your not getting confused with lacquer thinners? that only works with tamiya acrylic from practice since theyre a synthetic lacquer/acrylic hybrid which is very different to other acrylic brands and tamiya themselves say it makes a harder surface if you thin with lacquer thinners. Try it with something like vallejo though & you end up with a lumpy mess. Never ever heard of a brand of acrylic that works with enamel thinners, but who knows, there may be one out there. Doesnt sound like a good idea to me.

Gunpla is not a very good hobby to try and remedy sudden bursts of melancholy and depression, isnt it? kek
>>
>>5696904

There's not really one site for props and stuff.

So many of those things are many in small batches, by dudes working our of their garages, that it can be pretty hard to find a garage kit you're looking for unless it's of a very popular character/robot, or it just came out.

That said, E2046 seems to have a pretty wide selection of kits, if you don't care about recasting or morals.

I've been straight building Gunpla for over a year now (mostly Iron Blooded Orphans since they look good out of the box). I'm now interested in doing panel washes (Tamiya Panel Line Acccent) but I don't have the means to get a gloss coat to protect the plastic. Can I use it on a matte coat (industrial cans)?

TLDR - Is Tamiya Panel Line Accent on matte coat viable?
>>
>>5697087
Noooooooo

Just wash on bare plastic and coat with matte

If you need to know why, the surface imperfections will cause the wash to spread like a spiderweb in all directions since you've just given it channels to flow through at the micro level
>>
>>5697087
No. The purpose of a gloss before a wash isn't just to protect the plastic. It helps the wash flow smoother and wipe off easier for cleaning it up.

A matt coat is going to soak up a wash like a sponge and smear during cleaning.
>>

gloss is smooth so it creates a shine, matte isn't so the light isn't reflected as much. Which means it's bad for putting decals on, panel linning, or panel washing.

your local hobby shop will help you

>>
Why does Vallejo have both "Thinner medium" and "airbrush thinner"
>>
>>5697712
Because they're two totally different things? One is for thinning airbrush paints, the other is an artist's medium.
>>
Everyone freaking out about markers on bare plastic, keep in mind an important fact:

Not all plastics are the same.
The one you have to worry about is ABS, which is sometimes used for inner frames. ABS can be damaged by the pour type markers.
That said, the vast majority of gunpla is styrene, and pour type is fine for lining bare styrene.
In case you are extra retarded and need more help, the runners have either PS or ABS on them. PS stands for polystyrene. :^)
>>
>>5697712
For the vallejo brand, thinner medium is acrylic based and meant for handrushing (and airbrushed like shit). Airbrush medium is a stronger solvent iirc intended for airbrushing. I see people suggest using their airbrush CLEANER over the medium a lot for thinning vallejo for airbrushing though.

Wrong.

What do they have in common? Where did the plastic crack?

Correct answer: cracks caused by white spirits will form where plastic is stressed (joints, peg and hole connections, even badly cleaned nubs), type of plastic doesn't matter, painted or bare doesn't matter.

Is the arm joint from the MG Infinite Justice, tree J.
It's ABS. PS and ABS are chemically different, they may react to the same solvents but the magnitude of their reaction is vastly different. A fast evaporating solvent like white spirits won't damage anything except compromised or weak (very small, thin, etc) PS parts because it's gone up in the air before it's had a chance to do serious harm.
>>
So you cant paint abs? Does that mean you can't paint inner frames?
>>
I fucked up and didn't save the pics from that Road to 100 guide that anon posted, can someone else post it again, pls?

Certain types of paints are bad for ABS plastic. Acrylics are generally going to be the safest to use, though some people swear by enamel paints.

Does a spray booth really NEED to be ventilated when working with an airbrush?

I want to invest in a an airbrush setup since the price of sprat cans really starts to ad up, but I wouldn't be able to exhaust that kind of setup through my window without making some serous rearrangements
>>

yeah you need ventilation unless you wanna suffocate or have to wear protective clothing
>>
>>5698210
Depends on how much you value your respiratory health
>>
>>5698210
That's literally the entire point of a spray booth, to funnel and ventilate paint so you're no longer in its presence.

You can try to build a bucket filter to vent into but venting outside is the best.

Handguns are from the kotobukia handgun weapon set. You will need to get two if you want to dual weild the same gun.

How much thinner do you normally ad to paints when hand brushing details?

Would you thin metallic paints the same amount?
>>
>>5699198

There's no set ratio. Just thin it until it's thinned. You're gonna be able to do all the reading you want, telling you every ratio under the sun, but eventually, you're just going to have to get an eye for what thin paint looks like.
>>

>>

>>
>>5698049
I think I see another part of your problem, I am assuming when you said that, that you don't fully realize that the markers being discussed are paint markers and thus not 'weaker then paint' since it is paint.
>>
>>5698521
Try going to the miniature threads on /tg/ too. There are a few different techniques that tend to be used for painting miniatures then scale models that people don't always realize exist.
>>
>>5699198
Metallics I usually do not add the same exact ratio, sometimes they have to have less thinner, sometimes more. And in most cases I do not reccomendation hand painting metallics. It is good for smaller areas and details, but not when you want the full shiny effect. They always come out a bit more dull with hand paint in the best cases, worst cases they just set completely unevenly

With everything in life you're gonna need to find new reasons.
When you start a job you might really be into it and be the first employee to arrive everyday, then a year or so down the line you have to give yourself a peptalk to even get out of your car and clock in.
Same with relationships.
Idk theres something about humans and our ability to adapt, something fun and exciting over time becomes the baseline and seems mundane, nothing has actually changed except our perspective. So sometimes you have to take time or a step back and reexamine the thing and analyze why it matters to you, and see if it is actually still adding value to your life. And sometimes we have to just find new reasons for doing the things we're doing because eventually the old reasons won't be good enough.

Yes. Otherwise the spray gets blown out the back-end of your booth back into your room. Have to have a way to funnel it outside.

Check the manufacturer's website, they all have their own ratios. For handbrushing they all recommend thinned-to-milk but that's such an eyeball measurement I just thin them a little less than their airbrush ratios.

Yeah, I think most hobbyshops may be like that. I've had my HiMo Serpent in the public case at my local Hobbytown for a while.

About to start on a Korchima Spl. I've not done waterslides in at least fifteen years, I'm dreading them all so I'm only going for the console and yellow triangles to match the animation.

I would buy some if I had a middleman. Do they even ship that stuff outside of America?

So I'm thinking of getting the generic ultrasonic cleaner on Amazon for airbrush cleaning, removing paint, and I guess glasses. For stripping paint, do I just add the parts in and use purple power/simple green? I think I remember in a past thread that I may damage the plastic with the cleaner?
>>

For the airbrush, dillute the simple green with water. Don't just go straight simple green, and be sure you rinse the airbrush out completely to flush out soap residue before reassembly and use.

I generally do like 10-15% simple green to water, when clean, rinse out, rinse out cleaner, refill cleaner with just water, blast the parts again, rinse out, leave to dry, reassemble.

Also, be sure to not put your rubber gaskets in with the brush, the simple green will erode at them.

Cons aren't always too overpriced. I almost picked up a MG Zeong for a 80 USD or the MG Perfect Zeong for 100 USD a few weeks ago at one. Really been looking for one of those kits and everywhere online is seriously overpriced.
>>
>>5701015
I've gotten some decent deals from cons.

Heck, even got some discount gunpla from bluefin at one.

Last Anime Expo I went to two years ago I bought maybe 5 kits all below general retail.

At 6000Yen, a 80USD MG Zeong seems like the price importers and distributors would charge, it should more or less be 60USD for a legit bargain.

Pretty sure they are not the only manufacturers of silicone.

Do you have a wargaming community where you live? Movie industry? Any kind of prototyping shops? All of those make silicone molds would know where to get silicone. Ask around relevant forums.

I'd be more worried about metal (if your airbrush is the cheap chinese variety). Degreasers are corrosive and cheap brushes are made from cheap alloys and poorly plated.

Thanks for the advice! I have a Badger Krome if it helps, and looking at the parts list, the rubber gasket you mentioned are the O rings that are RK 83 and 94, right? So I should remove both before trying to clean it with the diluted simple green?
>>5701102
Like mentioned, I'm assuming the Badger wouldn't get ruined by it.

Then again, after looking around to no avail of the particular combination, I saw some stuff of just using dish soap to clean airbrushes in a sonic cleaner. Wouldn't that just be an end all safe alternative? And save more serious stuff like simple green for stripping paint off kits?

Tamiya Panel doesn't destroy plastic. I've used it on bare
plastic with White Spirit and it did absolutly nothing.

After ordering SAL shipments from japan 3-5 times a month for the last 6 years, I can attest the memes are bullshit.

My record for an SAL order not arriving was two months.
