So lets talk about Hasbro, and a lot of the odd decisions they've been doing. A lot of people are saying Hasbro is lazy for their Computron. but that isn't really true; even if you think their Computron looks worse(because it really does), they still had to put about as much time into production with those retools as takara did. "Lazy" would be just using Takara's remolds.

But why not, though? Why go through all the trouble of engineering a set of completely different remolds from Takara? Keep in mind those hasbro remolds, in all likelihood, HAD to be engineered by takara, unless Hasbro is starting to do things like that entirely in-house; which I doubt. So Takara basically worked on two sets of Technobot remolds. I can't fathom why they decided to go this route and make more work for both themselves.

Did anyone ask about this at the panel at all, or was it wasted on stupid bullshit questions like asking for more Animated toys?

Speaking as someone who doesn't care about G1 accuracy, I don't mind 3/5ths of Hasbro, and I think their car-guy is better than Takara's. Jet-guy is mediocre on both. The Hasbro drilltank is just awful, though. Takara wins by virtue of having a different head sculpt in robot mode, though.

Hasbro, actually.
I had no attachment to the Technobots prior to the set, but Strafe, Scattorshot, Afterburner and New Friend Scrounge look good, and i've been looking for a Streetwise mold for a while so Lightspeed doesn't bother me much. Hasbro Nosecone DOES suffer from the lack of a proper head, but this set otherwise is the one that makes me care about Computron.

I own the Maketoys one.

He comes off as really skinny in profile but from head on he looks fantastic. The individual bots are all fairly solid too and I'm in love with the altmodes of not-scattershot and not-afterburner.

not-lightspeed is probably the weakest of the set since his alt mode is just a car and his robot mode has some kibbly bits around the knees

my favorite Takaradrone thing was when some guy was importing all the Takara Legends figures (the ones that have the RiD app stickers) because "Takara always wins," got them, ripped off the stickers, and found out that they have circular molded indentations.

It was hilarious to watch him justify spending twice as much for an objectively worse toy that he already fucked up. I think he ended up filling the indent with clay and repainting it, lol

1) Rebirth

Does IDW count? I think they have some decent characterizations for Chromedome and Brainstorm and Hardhead as well as Fortress Maximus.
>>
>>5599200

God, Rebirth is utterly terrible
>>
>>5599200
>decent characterizations for Chromedome and Brainstorm
They're both gay
>>
>>5599205
That is only one part of their characterization. Brainstorm is a mad scientist who likes making WMDs and other implausible scientific devices to show everyone how smart he is. Chromedome is a mindreader who has abused his talents for the war and wants a fresh start.
>>
>>5599203
Which goes to show that Headmasters is even worse compared to Rebirth.
>>
>>5599205
Is it really gay if their species doesn't have sexes or genitals. Even the fembots are just a different subgroup like beastformers or gestalts.
>>
>>5599205
That's basically an inevitability when you have so few feminine robots with a fanbase who wants more but bitches about actually getting more of them.

One of my favorite part is that the Timelines (TFCC exclusives) had a comic centered around them where Stylor was a targetmaster, so his synonymous presence with Chromedome meant he was an awkward third wheel in the relationship between him and Rewind.
>>

>>
>>5599253
>It's no wonder this is the last botcon

Right even if you are a fanpub apologist. It's pretty clear Funpub couldn't satisfy either Hasbro and the fans. One wanted them touting the brand and product lines and cracking down on 3ps while holding back on information while the other side wanted more freedom and better exclusives and more information from Hasbro. Either way they couldn't satisfy everyone. And their own selfservinng and cold grasping for a few dollars and cents probably didn't help.

Read the Marvel Headmasters comic (#1-4) and Marvel TF #37-42, 46-51, 54-59, 62, 66, 69-75, and 79.

Marvel Nebulons are the best Nebulons in that there is no Hive bullshit, the Nebulons look just like humans and not a bunch of green skinned geriatrics, and Comic Book Zarak is basically an alien version of US politician John McCain, American Bad-Ass.....
>>
>>5599279
At least they're unique molds with great engineering and design, not to mention multiple options per character.

Unlike FP where you get a bunch of recolored molds that were already released. Since they're based on HasTak designs you know they're already shit too, so at least that's consistent. And don't count on having other options if a character is shit.

They weren't actually breaking any rules.
>>
>>5599276

They were handing out fliers for an entirely different 'con at a different hotel where they could sell 3P stuff.
>>
>>5599302

They did that with the set that completed the G1 seekers. And people complained that they were being forced to spend exclusive prices to get essential characters.

and then Hasbro put them all out at retail anyway.

And even then they still made shit like fucking Headmaster Scorponok and an unreleased Pretender.

so tell me, anon, what's "fan favorite" enough to be good enough to be sold to you as an exclusive, but not something that should be sold at retail? If they can't make toys of obscure characters, and it'd be screwing people over to make "important" characters exclusive, who SHOULD they be making toys of?

and if your pie in the sky dream of all new molds being released at a convention happened, I guarantee you people would riot over the fact that they had to pay 100 dollars for them instead of 10. That price isn't gonna drop, either, because it costs more recoup costs on individual members of a smaller production run than a mass retail one.
>>
Do they have any good TF figure to scale for the Fort Max? I mean little people that could go into small vehicles.
>>
>>5599296
Realistically I think Hasbro knows they can no better go after 3rd party stuff than they can bootlegs. From a manufacturing standpoint they both have the same headache; they can't exactly track down and have the companies/factories make these things shut down that easily. They'd have to have cooperation with the chinese government to do so and even if they managed to shut down one, another would pop up overnight. A waste of legal fees.

The only avenue they really have to combatting 3rd parties is buy closing off retailers from selling them; usually by refusing to do business with them unless they stop selling 3rd parties. Hasbro did this to get KOs out of Big Lots; giving them cheap alternative toys in exchange.

I thin another thing is that we forget that Hasbro's design team is a whole other level from the big business guys atHasbro. The design team is most consciously aware of the 3rd parties, and they try now to combat them by offering alternatives in the mainline. If the bigger business guys at hasbro are aware of it, I think they just see it as a nuisance that doesn't make enough to consider a threat, and since they probably don't collect with toys themselves, they probably just think they're just like bootlegs. Now, if those CEOs, presidents, managers, etc. ever consider 3rd parties to be a significant threat, then I'd see the hammer being brought down; likely by refusing to do business with places like BBTS, TFsource; in otherwords making it impossible to buy 3rd party stuff online outside of sites that don't sell Hasbro or takara toys at all.
>>
>>5599316

They shouldn't bother with con exclusive figures at all. They're usually raw shit and overpriced as fuck.
>>
>>5599316
Just another facet of what is wrong in the TF community. We want new and unique molds but don't want to shell out for the actual production costs so we get recolors and different heads and complain because it's not varied enough.

>>
>>5599308
Probably not. Botcon may change in name and style(because FP bought the actual name), but there'll probably still be conventions, and the fanclub service will likely continue. Hasbro has months to reorganize.
>>
>>5599323

here's the thing

Hasbro actually has no PROBLEM with the third party stuff

The whole "we don't want third party stuff at the convention" thing? It's to maintain plausible deniability. Because if this is snaking around underneath their nose and they acknowledge it, it opens all sorts of nasty legal precedents from the competition they actually fucking care about.

They're trying to disassociate from it to protect themselves AND so the third parties don't end up shooting themselves in the foot. However, TFSource and its fans continuing to wave their asses in their face about everything kind of undermines that, so they're not only showing Hasbro disrespect, they're undermining the thing they're supposed to be fucking supporting. For fans, it's about dickwaving, for TF Source, it's about promoting themselves for the most buck they can make in the moment.

TF Source, for the record, is just as bad as FunPub is, but that's another story.
>>

The only thing missing from takaras to make it perfect is the new hands/feet. Don't know why takara didn't use them and these combiners really could benefit from ankle tilts.

An interesting thought but realistically you can't stop 3P by having Hasbro refuse to sell to online retailers if they don't stop for the simple fact that many online retailers that are used for those types of figures are actually based in China.

What's more, I believe that a gentleman actually owns a few 3P companies as well as a number of factories, effectively allowing him to bypass many hurtles that would cause other businesses trouble.

To combat it, Hasbro would have had to act many years ago. The ship has sailed at this point.
>>
>>5599325
You're moving goal posts everywhere. There's nothing wrong with con-exclusives as an idea. Pretty much every major con does them.

I do think that FP over saturated the market horribly on them, though. The first year few years of them running the con all had decent boxsets. There were some mediocre things but in general, the sets filled holes in collections and it was exciting to get so many toys. the problem is that FP constantly tried to outdo itself with quantity over quality. The prior BC organizers did 2-4 figures a year, most years only 2. But those toys were mostly based on desirable molds, or had great paint apps. Instead of trimming the fat and doing figures that people actually wanted, FP stuck with lofty ideas no one knew what to do with.

So I hop the next con organizers go back to basics. Japanese conventions get Masterpiece redecoes as con exclusives, why can't we? An MP redeco with a new head would be really cool as a con exclusive.
>>
>>5599325

I'm sure once they went that route, everyone in the fandom would react with the calm, reasoned demeanor to which they are accustomed.

and by that I mean, they would fucking riot.
>>
>>5599309
>weren't selling turds

>So I hop the next con organizers go back to basics. Japanese conventions get Masterpiece redecoes as con exclusives, why can't we? An MP redeco with a new head would be really cool as a con exclusive.

there's been like maybe a handfill. Others have been stuff like RID Scourge/Black Convoy, Armada Megatron, ROTF Mindwipe and Skystalker into G2 Dreadwing and Smokescreen, etc.
>>
>>5599364
See, most of those where fantastic and well thought out, though. THAT'S what we need at a con. Not forced themes.
>>
>>5599356
I'd also like more original characters every now and then. One of my most-wanted Botcon figures ever is Antagony, who was completely made up along with the rest of the Botcon BW characters for the convention.
>>
>>5599364

oh, and none of Takara's convention exclusive MPs have had new tooling, by my recollection. That'd be extremely expensive to do for an MP in such small numbers.
>>
>>5599369

dude, I'm pretty sure that if FP did G2 Dreadwing and Smokescreen instead of Takara, they'd be called lazy for it. They're just redecoes.

Hell, FP did their own god damn version of Scourge. Every other Takara convention exclusive is a black repaint, typically.

3H kept it balanced, though. We got Cyclonous, but we also got CatScan and two minibots. We got the G1 lambo twins, but we also got Roulette and shadow striker. Plus at the time, we had no idea we'd ever see a G1 revival, so those characters where in demand. FunPub tried to keep doing that even though Classics became a thing. If you do interesting redecoes and characters, people will come to them. Landshark didn't sell, but nothing that year did well anyway..

Ok, time to post what you'll be buying:

TM:
Brawn, and maybe Hasbro Hardhead for a body (we are never getting a Brawn figure, I have to accept that).

Legends:
Wheelie, Rewind, Rumble

Deluxe:
Hardhead (both Takara, and Hasbro), Skullcruncher (Takara), Brainstorm whenever he comes out, and all of deluxe wave 2.

Voyager:
Galvatron, Astrotrain (Takara)

Leader:
Blaster (has to be on clearance, at least 10-15 dollars less)

Titan:

Nothing, FM shares too much with Metro and something looks off about the design.
