Here's what I know.
Hasbro first made the Transformers toys.
These were based on the Machine Robo popularity. Hasbro saw potential in transforming robots and made their own.
They licensed the designs to European toy companies. From here the Japanese made knockoffs of the toys and marketed it as Diaclone. Hasbro also realized how to sell their toys with a cartoon series.
They wanted to sue Takara at first but realized how partnering with a Japanese toy company could be better in the long run. They settled with Takara and that was how Transformers got legit in Japan.

Its crazy how Transfans can manage to make nostalgia goggles for anything as recent as 4 years ago. Thundertron was an awful, awful figure. Alpha Trion isn't great but even with the concessions made to his lion mode it still looks much better.
