>Bard gets charmed by a Dryad
>he starts acting kind of nutty because the Dryad told him that she absolutely needs two of the items in the party's possession
>Dryad eventually has to run
>No one trusts the bard because he's acting crazy

Fast forward 2 hours in-game

>Bard is still scheming to get the items out of the Cleric's bag of holding
>Roll a positive encounter on my random encounter table
>Pixies show up to play with the party, really like Bard's music
>Pixie casts fly on the bard and lifts him up really high
>Bard: PUT ME DOWN!
>Pixie ends concentration
>Bard rolls a nat 1 on acrobatics
>Bard is bleeding out
>Party is considering their options out loud, like stabilizing the bard and dragging him along with them (but not reviving)
>Bard rolls a 4 on a death save
>Party continues squabbling
>Announce that he's going to roll another death save
>He rolls privately and gets a nat 1 (2 more fails, is now dead)
>Party uses the Bard's own potion on him
"No effect."
>Druid casts Cure Wounds
"No effect."
>Pixies look horrified
>Bard player is laughing so hard
"Well, you aren't charmed anymore."

He wasn't even mad because it was the dumbest death ever. Good thing he was only level 3.

I've had a similar situation.

>Pathfinder
>Party is on important mission with NPC they like, one PC even has a romance with her
>They're near the end of the keep they're storming, NPC gets hit hard with a fireball and goes down hard
>Party has limited resources and are arguing what to do
>They decide to finish the combat first, hoping she'll last until then
>They finish combat about 5 rounds later
>They give her a potion of healing
>No response
>They check her pulse
>Nothing
>Heal check reveals she died 3-4 rounds ago
>players freak the fuck out
>player with romance destroyed
>mfw

I mean, she had some good coconuts.

>Finish combat in 5 rounds
>NPC dies in 1-2 rounds

So 6 seconds from impact to death? Seems a bit harsh but you're the GM.
>>
>>46643449
So... is this thread about stupid player character deaths?
>>
>>46644824
I dunno man, getting hit hard with a fireball sounds like it could go quick. Maybe he rolled for it?
>>
>>46645606
>>46644824
It's in the standard rules. GM just didn't OOC tell them how exactly deep into negatives the girl was.
>>
>>46645623
Ah, I wouldn't know, I don't play D&D only DH. So, I mean, instant death is a thing if you don't hug cover like it was your lost lover and get some armor.

And grenades.

And suppressive fire.

The holy trinity.
>>

It's more of a, physical charming.

>positive encounter
>involves supernatural horrors lifting characters to fatal heights
I'd hate to see what you call a negative encounter, jesus.
>>
>>46643570
Do people seriously do this? The bitch just got dunked by a fireball, is safe to assume if they have at least 10 INT they'd know she's in peril.

The party I've been with in the same campaign actually goes fast and wife out of their way to stabilize and our cleric has two casts of Breath of Life to boot.

I wouldn't be mad so much as I would be baffled that they'd think a downed ally would be safe while dying.
>>
>>46643449
>Roll a positive encounter
How was that positive?
>>
>>46646441
Because it wasn't trying to murder them like 70% of normal encounters. The other 29% are social.
>>
>>46646485
The murdered bard suggests the first part of your post isn't entirely true.

We were once in a fight with a Beholder in a room which had some anomaly going on with planes. The area was split in two, with a 10 foot rift dividing them.
Surges of magic would scramble up the floor or cause hazards and teleporting every now and then, so dealing with the rift was an occasional issue. A fairly simple athletics check or some innovation was enough to get across, but the fear of failure was still pretty strong, moreso because of the consequences.

Our Monk got their shit slapped over the rift, not in too much of a bind, but they had to get back over if they wanted to punch the Beholder. They use an ability which lets them move their speed as if flying. She tells the DM "I fly down into the rift."

After some confusion about how far, what her speed was, where she intended to land etc, DM finally clicks.
"You want to move your speed straight down into the rift?"
"Yes."
"Are you...are you absolutely sure?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm giving you one last dex save to catch the edge"
"Why? I'm flying past the edge"
"The flight ends once you stop moving, and you fall if you haven't landed..."
"I know."
"Well. You're dead."

You might've thought it was character suicide, but no. She was somewhat upset (but declined offers of taking it back). Said she wanted to see what was down there. In the rift between planes...

She also had a habit of getting her characters killed in stupid ways (Deciding to run straight through a pack of stirges even after having Opportunity re-explained to her was another), but that one was probably the worst.

>Faeries not taking a request literally, especially when it can fuck someone.
What kind of faeries do you play with?
>>
>>46643449
>Dryad eventually has to run

WHERE IS THAT BITCH GOING TO GO? SHE'S A DRYAD!
>>
>>46649421
Maybe she's the spirit of some kind of fantastical ambulatory tree, that wouldn't be too farfetched in a world of magic and shit.
>>

>Bard rolls a nat 1 on acrobatics
great quote mate

I CAST COUNTERFIST
>>
>>46649370
That's not literal. It would be if it was "Let me go". but not "Put me down".

>group investigates dungeon
>finds it odd it's squeaky clean, no enemies

>lol shit Spot checks
>necromancer engulfed by gelatinous cube
>they don't know about paralysis
>warblade gets engulfed
>sorcerer decides to cast Fireball now
>allow the engulfed reflex saves because I didn't expect that idiotic a move
>necromancer dies anyway

That sorcerer was a very stupid player.

My philosophy has always been that an entertaining death is a good death, period. That bard died a good death and he died well.
