How old is this Ork? How long does it take for an Ork to reach 'Adult' size? What's their average life span? I assume with the exception of Warbosses and Warlords, 10 years would be ancient by Ork standards.
>>
>How old is this Ork?
No idea.

>How long does it take for an Ork to reach 'Adult' size?
That's also pretty ambiguous, what do you mean by "adult size"?
The three basic sizes would be boy sized, nob sized, and boss sized.
Orks are born nearly boy sized, orc adolescence and growth is more mental than physical.
Even then, it's mostly a matter of learning and adjusting to ork kultur.

Orks physical growth is purely a matter of fighting.
Older orks have had more opportunity to fight, but younger orks who have fought more will be larger.

>What's their average life span?
No idea. Orks have pretty extreme outliers in both directions.
Assuming the aren't killed in battle they could probably live forever.

>I assume with the exception of Warbosses and Warlords, 10 years would be ancient by Ork standards.
I'm certain they're not counting, but I assume any nob older than that has either become boos (not necessarily a warboss) or been killed by their boss for getting to big.

The largest known ork (and probably the oldest) was The Beast, who was the size of a city block with teef as big as trees.

Also of note, bigger orks have bigger brains.
Most of this is extra motors control (for their larger bodies), but bigger orks (bosses, etc.) tend to be smarter orks (or at least more cunning orks).

Ghazkghull appears to be at least a hundred or so years old, if not older.
>>
>>46613630
orks dont actually have a size limit right?
>>
>>46614441
Right. Just like fish.
But the level of growth decreases over the years. So they grow extremely fast in their youth and the older they get, the slower they grow.
>>
>>46614441
Orks are biologically immortal and grow forever.

I hear they live longer if they have a lot of other orks around, but most orks don't live long enough to die of natural causes (assuming they even can die of natural causes).

I also heard that the oldest known grot was 9 years old before his master sat on him.
>>
>>46614704
It used to be canon (no idea if it's true any more) that once Orks reach the size of a Skarboy (between boy and nob) the next "step" is to start putting on size and muscle to be able to either boss the other orks around, OR to beat the current boss, so there's a kind of "softcap" on ork size that's tied to ambition, and in a way, brains, because once you start putting on inches the current boss or nob is going to notice and try to kick his upcoming riva's teef in, so you have to be brutal AND kunning to rise very far in the ranks.
>>
>>46614595

Nothing that dramatic, but I think it was the 3rd edition codex they talked about some tribes deep in Green space where the average boy was Nob-Sized, so you can only imagine how big the largest Ork warbosses got.

The Beast was actually the size of an actual hab block, and kicked his Dreadnought-sized nobs around for fun

That's because the writer went full retard in order to one up 40k. How the fuck does something that big choke the Emperor? At that size he'd be crushing him between giant green hands

>>
>>46615705
neither Ghazzi nor the Beast are related to a story were E walked the earth, you mean the Waaaaghboss from Ullanor, Urrlak Urruk
>>
>>46615779
Yes, really. He led an enormous WAAAAAAAGH! during 31,544, overran tons of sectors.
He even parked an enormous rok in orbit around Terra.

But instead of a hollowed out asteroid filled with guns and orks, it was a hollowed out planet.
>>
>the Beast is as big as a Titan/hab block
No he isn't. Some Navy rating, that was in the process of shitting himself, described him as such based only on a shitty pict recording.
I know some of you hate BL, but constantly exaggerating BL fluff on purpose is retarded.

It's not the same anon, the emperor loved the primarchs like children and thus held back, the ork has no reason to hold back against terra, unless it turns out the Beast was after sweet emperor booty all along that is.
>>
>>46616294
no one is exaggerating what was literally said.

I am Slaughter, chapter 31:
"that bastard thing is aboard the moon," Heth said. "It's their leader. I think he's the size of a damn hab-block."

take it as you want, but there it is and your only defense is your angsty opinion.
>>
>>46617078
Anon, how are Orks supposed to get stuck in krumping humies if they just go and blow em all to bits from orbit? You're not thinking like an Ork, ya git.
>>
>>46617001
I bet there is so much shit you could have done in your life if viewed by an outside observer thousands of years later, but instead here you are judging a fictional character.
>>
>>46617170
Then what is the purpose of having a deffstar in the first place?
>>
>>46617078
Because orks don't war to win, the war to fight. Terra isn't where the fight is right now.

>>46617176
>anon could have understood that I was mocking the first anon using the same syntax they used to judge a fictional character

>>

I'd hardly class that as a reliable statement of fact. It's clearly the opinion of a man in need of new pants who's exaggerating.
>>
>>46617141
>He indicated one image in particular, and then enlarged it onto a console’s main overhead screen. The image made Maskar blench. It was a pict feed, streamed through some exotic form of image capture system, that was being broadcast directly to them. It was a transmission for their benefit, for the benefit of any victims the orks came upon.
>There was little sense of scale, but Maskar appeared to be looking into the eyes of the most immense ork warboss. The creature was so mature, so vast and bloated, its features were distorted. Broken tusks like tree trunks jutted from the cliff edge of its lower jaw. It was staring right out of the screen with tiny, gleaming yellow eyes, its jaw moving.
>‘That bastard thing is aboard the moon,’ Heth said. ‘It’s their leader. I think he’s the size of a damn ‘That bastard thing is aboard the moon,’ Heth said. ‘It’s their leader. I think he’s the size of a damn hab-block, Maskar. Saints of Terra, there hasn’t been an ork boss that massive since Ullanor. I mean, they just don’t develop to that size any more. Look, look. In the foreground? Those are greenskin warriors. They look like children.’
Both of the guys are losing their shit because they just started a suicide run against an Ork armada that easily destroyed a whole Chapter of SM. And they are viewing Ork recordings/transmission through Imperial pict viewers. Them claiming the Beast is as big as a hab block does not make it as big as a hab block.
>>
>>46617346
and your claim that it isn't holds infinitely less weight. how large is a hab block?
>>
>>46617314
thats your opinion, which I will remind you, will never be canon.

there it is in black and white, written by an author from a character. your position is "he is scared." what does that prove? that you personally would exaggerate when you personally are scared? what does that have to do with words deliberately written by an author?

Fish grow until they get eaten.
Or until they're so big they starve.
>>
>>46618261
A lot of them have life cycles that kill them though, like sea fish that spawn upstream rivers and that die from exhaustion soon after.
Not that it contradicts your point mind, just for that other anon's info.
>>
>>46618341
But there are fish that don't too. Catfish can grow to be big mothafukkas

I wasn't contesting you, just giving context for the anon that was asking that not all have a lifecycle of eat or starve.
>>
>>46618358 You're missing >>46618341's point.
It's not that some fish stop growing, it's that they exhaust themselves and die in their natural environment.
Put any of those fish in a tank and you can get them as big as you'd like.
>>
>>46618261
So why do people's pet goldfish never grow that xboxhueg?
>>
>>46618397
Because that goldfish is smarter at surviving than the people that own them are at keeping them alive.
>>
>>46618397
Small bowls basically. They don't have to not fit in their enviornment for it to be too small to grow. That's why pond goldfish can grow larger than pet ones and why specialist keepers can grow them larger still.
>>
>>46618397
>>46618454
Kept a couple of gold fish in a bowl for years. They grew from maybe an inch when I got them to maybe two inches. For some reason they got moved into a pond. Ended up about six inches.
>>
>>46618454
>>46618519
I see, so they stop growing if they don't have enough space to comfortably grow into.
>>
>>46618454 >>46618519 >>46618553
It's how much food they can get, not how much space they have to live in.
Fish with more space tend to be fish with more access to food.
You can grow big fish in small spaces if you manage their food right.
But do note that fish with too much access to food will die from overeating.

>>
>>46614174
>Assuming the aren't killed in battle they could probably live forever.

I remember reading some fluff where generations of mekboys and orcs died on a planet where they crashed on. Sadly for those orcs they were unable to fight any major fights on a constant basis.
>>
>>46618341
Crocodiles are worse they can grow to 30 foot or more
>>
>>46620682
That doesn't make sense though as Orks fight among themselves if they fail to find proper opponents, thus keeping their eco-system stable.

>>46622634
No it could happen. If the planet had poor enough growing conditions there'd be very low numbers of orcs. In such a case they'd not be able to fight each other much because there's so few and so wouldn't grow or generate enough WAAAGH to get their tech started.

>>46625931
Absolutely right.
Also worth noting is that as much as orcs love dakka, it's getting in with the choppas that really promotes growth of the group. Warbands that use more dakka and less stompin are smaller on average.
But to address your point; the more a warband fights, the bigger the orcs get on average and the bigger the nobs and bosses will be. Because the nobs and bosses will be getting stuck in with da boys and so will keep growing too. But if they aren't fighting so much then the younger boys won't grow as fast and so as the older orcs die the average size will decrease.

Why dont 2 orks just go to space to krump each other for 100 years and then come back as super orks ?
>>
Orks don't die of natural causes. Their lifestyle is built so that they all eventually die in combat. If an ork keeps surviving his battles, he can live indefinitely

Also, orks can grow for the entirety of their lives, but their physical growth is influenced by rank and how much he fought.

An average ork boy will grow bigger and larger the more he fights, but his growth will reach a stalemate and stop completely until he manages to carve himself a place among the Nobz, usually killing a nov and taking his place.

A warboss keeps growing the stronger he becomes and the larger his WHAAAAAAAAAG! gets. Eventually, he influences the growing ratio of all orks below him, making them grow bigger before stopping
>>
Orks don't reach adult size. They are born already formed and as big as ordinary ork boyz
>>
>>46629415
>can't into gorkamorka
orks are born as yoofs (youths), and are /slightly/ smaller than normal orks
but they don't stay yoofs for long
>>
Gorkamorka's fluff said that generations of orkz worked together to get off the planet they were marooned on. After a while the groups fought each other over the name of the contraption they were working on, there was also clashes with various Mekboys because over time The Mekboys were not unified in making a spaceship anymore.

Albiet Gorkamorka is old, but as far as I know it has the only piece of fluff where Orkz are not able to fight on the frequency of the average Ork.
>>
What does "youth" and "adulthood" constitute for an ork? Is adulthood when they become able to spread spores?
>>
>>46631893
Dis is da shooty end. Dis is da holdy end.
Dis is da choppy end. Dis is da uvva holdy end.

Ya get all dat? Good, ya now a Boy.
>>
>>46631922
But what about becoming a man?
>>
>>46620275
Yep, some Imperial captain saw an out of scale picture from an Ork broadcast and said his head isas large as a habwhatever.

Some Anons think it was literal for some reason.
>>
>>46631940
Ya killed some gits? That'll about do it. You want ta join da kommandos or other weird bitz, ya choose now. If not, ya already know everyfing ya need ta be an Ork.
>>
>>46618597

That makes it much more reasonable. An Ork Boy is arguable the size of, or larger than, a human adult, probably on par with a space marine in some cases. A boss that would make them look like children would be twice or three (maybe four?) times as tall (by my own bullshit estimations). Perhaps the size of a two-story house at most, but most likely at least slightly less than that.

The rest sounds like exaggerated description, the kind you get when describing things that just have that dimensional quality of being much larger than ordinary. Look at the descriptions of large Great Whites from people who have been in the water with them; they note it's not just 15-20 feet long, but that it has girth, depth, and a kind of weight you don't truly get from pictures or video.
>>
>>46632010
So the difference between a young ork and an adult ork is that one's gotten their krumpy on?
>>
>>46632106 It's (mostly) learning ork kultur, yes.
Yoofs also need to get slightly larger, but that's part of getting their krump on.
(Which is part of learning kultur.)
>>
>>46632471
Now I'm imagining "oriuntatshun klasses" to teach orks where everything is, who da boss is and why he's da boss (tip: he's da biggest and da strongest). Plus a couple uvva boys dat you needs ta know about. Like da mek, dok and a couple of da biggest nobz.
>>
>>46632547
I'd always imagined they dived straight into ork society and gradually learned how it works.
But that sounds way better. Probably led by a Runtherd since they're the ones who preserve orkish traditions.
