The year is 1125, a full thirty years after the First Crusade was called for Jerusalem and brave, faithful souls took up the sword to liberate the holy land.

While they succeeded in their goal of pushing back the Turkish Sultanates, this brought on a resurgence in both the Empire of Eastern Rome - who found a groundswell of support from a popular uprising and his own generals, using the Crusaders as a distraction to reclaim much of Anatolia - and the Fatimid Caliphate, whose famous general Nassor reclaimed Mecca for his liege.

Sunni Islam's loss of Mecca has provoked a response - the disparate factions who yet make their homes in Northern Africa and Iberia have put aside their differences in order to lead a push to the east under an ambitious young warrior calling himself the new Caliph.

This move has understandably shaken the Christian rulers of Europe. A united Sunni Caliphate - should it succeed in taking all of northern Africa and reclaiming Mecca - would pose a threat not just to the newly-minted Crusader States, but to all of Christendom.

Thus, in a controversial act of Papal authority, the newly elected Pope Urchin II declared the Iberian Reconquest to be a holy crusade, encouraging warriors from the world over to march upon the Mohammedan occupier and to bring salvation to those ruling there.

This is an alternate-history nation builder with an emphasis on the characters that take part in this holy war. It is a sequel to the original Crusade Builder, whose archive you can find at http://archive.4plebs.org/tg/search/subject/Crusade%20Builder/ if you are interested.

However, knowledge of the minutiae of those threads are not necessary to participate. History has yet to diverge significantly from history, with the cracks only just starting to show.

You take on the role of a warlord of some description. Whether you intend to make a name, carve out a kingdom, serve your ruler faithfully or defend your home, you must have come from somewhere.

To play, fill in the following character sheet:

Name: [What you are called]
Culture: [Your country of origin]
Fluff: [What were you known for before the reconquest? Why are you taking part?]
Religion: [Are you a triumphant Catholic? A resurgent eastern Orthodox? A beleaguered Sunni or even some kind of Pagan?]
Colour: [How do you want to be represented on the map?]
Transit: [How did you arrive in Iberia? Did you march? Did you sail? Or are you simply defending your home?]

1. Shore up our defenses. The heathens pour out from the north to bolster our foes and we must be ready.

The training is fairly dismal to start with as your least experienced underlings get situated with the rest of the men - but a few seem to pick up the basics of combat.

The local sheikhs and emirs, however, turn you away without an audience - and from what you can gather they consider your arrogance unbecoming when they say you're "Just a mercenary" and "Have no reason to think highly of yourself."

>>46524112
The trip is slow going, almost tortuous - but you just about pull through, and put some meagre distance under your feet. You pass through the duchy of Barcelona, and reach the borders of Moorish Iberia.

As you pass by a few towns and villages there seems to be little to offer, but eventually you bring in donations of enough coins of varying denominations to fill a single chest.

Name: Mattew Fores
Culture: Holy Roman Empire
Fluff: Second son of a German family, Matthew trained for years with the bow from horseback. An expert marksman on foot or horse, Matthew won a small bit of fame in a tourney held by the Duke of Masovia. His three signature arrows, forest green shafts with swan fletchings, managed to strike the center ring from 400 yards. Not particularly suited for melee combat, due to his short statue, Matthew fights with a short sword and saxe only when absolutely necessary. Otherwise, his bow is his primary weapon. The ability to fire multiple shafts in the span of seconds has been engrained through years of practice, each one carrying a man's life in it's barbed steel head.

The call for the reconquest of the Iberian peninsula struck the young man hard, and with his brother set to inherit what little holdings the family owns, there was nothing to hold Matthew back. Astride his faithful horse Connam, with his bow and wits as armaments, Matthew set off to free the Holy Land.

Now that your men are properly equipped, you set to work ensuring that they are well fed and loyal.

The local community praises your efforts, and your men are only too glad to cheer you when you lead them - but your efforts to train horsemen are stymied by the incredible task of finding horses not being used for farming, and getting the equipment together that a mounted warrior would expect as their due proves a headache.

>>46524826
Though outfitting mounted warriors is a mighty task, it is helped along by the wealth used to find them the mounts, weapons and training they need, supplementing your elite cavalry contingent.

You also manage to find a local lordling down enough on his luck that he is happy to marry you to one of his daughters in exchange for a quick infusion of gold - and you use this fairly prestigious marriage to garner the respect of the local lords, envoys from the lord who previously spurned your services now coming to you to beg audience.

>>46524840
Things move slowly down here in the south. Though young men are more than happy to join your banner, such things are always true. Your scouts are all rebuffed from muslim lands, and you can find no safe route deeper southward. It's frustrating, but for now you have to give up, or risk losing all your men.

Minorca.

Taken from the Empire by the so-called Caliphate of Corbaba in 903, the island had several natural harbors that would prove a useful base for raiding and launching invasions without depending upon Western Kings.

His father had argued for landing onto Hispania proper, but Philaretos' arguments about helping to secure the seas had weight to them.

When he landed, he planted the Standard of the Empire into the sands. He would see the conquest of this isle.

1. Send demands to the towns and settlements to submit, those who fight will forfeit their lives, those who leave, their treasures. Moors who stay may be permitted, for now - if they give half their treasures.

2. There are still Christians here on Minorca, try to recruit them for the reconquest of these islands.

Your scouts return soon enough - after a fashion. Their heads are left outside one of your villages, with a note that says that Sheikh Ibrahim does not tolerate spies.

Your men take to training much better now that they've had time to settle into the routines of their new military lives. As the month wears on, you are satisfied with two new regiments of spearmen.

Name: Konstantinos Ibericos
Culture: Byzantine Greek
Fluff: Konstantinos' father served in the Thracesion Theme as a permanent cavalry officer, having been swept into the crusade for a short while at it's height, serving in the retinue of an Italian merchant. Konstantinos was naturally swept into this, and he grew up as the son of a rather confused Byzantine mercenary. He has, through poor luck, grown up in the assorted military camps of the Mediterranean and Levant. As the heir to his father's estate in Thrace, he returned to serve in the military of the empire for a short time, being eventually granted commission to lead a small expedition of theme men to Iberia to fight in their crusade, ostensibly as the Catholics had fought in the Crusade of the Byzantines. This situation has led to him traveling across the Mediterranean in a small Byzantine vessel with a small crew of sailors and some barely trained theme soldiers, not fit for the Tagmata, but not landed enough to serve in the upper class of the Themes.
Religion: Byzantine Orthodox, under the Patriarch of Antioch.
Colour: Purple, if it's available.

Bonuses: [A Hand for a Hand] A loyal servant adherent to the Orthodox faith as preached by the Matriarch of Antioch, Konstantinos holds that the Catholics ought to be repaid for their assistance in saving the Empire. This endears him to them, even if they consider their faith borderline heretical. +10 diplomacy with Catholic nations.

Konstantinos disembarked onto the small island, and directed his men to leave the ship in a decently safe place, and to scout the island, looking for any settlements or military resistance.

2. Scout out the Island for Arab or Muslim forces. Or any random villagers.

You think little of it at first, but this self-same storm seems to be lingering - and the more paranoid or credulous of the believers in your entourage start to say that your expedition is cursed.

When a bolt of lightning strikes the supplies, this is seen as confirmation and you see desertion in droves.

Transit: By ship, from Constantinople. The ship was not fitted with Greek fire, more suited to transporting grain.
Military: 50 mounted, 200 men at arms, 500 rabble.

Konstantinos spared only a moment to establish a safe camp, according to standard Theme practices, before finding and attacking the local Muslim force. The people of this island could likely be converted to loyal servants of the Emperor in Constantinople.

1. Set up a theme style military camp
2. Attack the Muslim forces with the entire force.

Bonuses: [Prince of Jerusalem] Ludovic's family is widely regarded as a line of heroes across Christendom. Ludovic himself is stubborn and ruthless, and his troops tend not to break easily.

1. Arrival in Catalonia. First, the arrival of the Templars should be known, and grand, for word to spread across the land that the grandson of the Fist of Christendom has arrived to free them at last. Templar knights bearing the awestriking emblems of the order and of Jersualem are to draw men from the villages around as we march, and from these fresh sources, exhausted of oppression and filled with new hope, we will find recruits.

2. There is no time for rest now. We march immediately on the Muslim town of Lledia to the direct north, as it will provide a perfect point for planning a quick, strong incursion to the western fortress of Zaragoza. This is a trivial task, as there will hardly be more than perhaps a single patrol, and with luck we can begin immediate preparations to take the soon-to-be-Templar fortress of Zaragoza.

We have surprise and ferocity as our primary working elements - the men of Zaragoza do not know of our arrival as of yet, or the strength of our armies, or that of Christendom itself. While Zaragoza is well-fortified, it is not so well-done as the central cities of Iberia, and to mow them down quickly will be a simple task. First, a small, elite group of men disguised as peasants are to move into the city and make their way to the central gates, where they should be able to slaughter the single guard or two with ease. 1/2. This is it, this is my moment. Crispinus turns to Ludovic. "Here we are, born to be kings! Princes of the universe!" he puts his arm around the Grandson of his father's closest ally "FIGHTING TO SURVIVE IN A WAR WITH THE DARKEST POWER!" He turns to the city, his voice like a signal horn, loud and clear amidst the day's noise "And here we are, We're the princes of the universe, Here we belong, Fighting for survival!" He turns to the guardsmen looking from the city walls "We've come to be the rulers of your world!"

I have heard that west of where we are another Muslim warband has set up camp. We shall carve out a warpath to them and meet these warriors and see if they are braver warriors than these.

Lord Otto Von Saxon stands before you, behind him a detachment of soldiers; though small in number, they all have the look of professionals: there were no common rabble among their ranks.

He briefly dismounted, visibly clasping a rosary in hand. "My directive was to oversee this crusade of yours, Noble Prince Ludovic. I shall see what I can do to ensure our success among those of a wicked heart. Christ be with you, and with your men."

Name: Lord Otto von Saxon
Culture: Holy Roman Empire; Saxony
Fluff: A mid-ranking knight of the Knights Hospitaller, finding himself leading a small band of like-minded cavalrymen, Otto was purportedly sent in order to oversee the progress of his peers, as well as ferry a large surplus of supplies to both his fellow crusaders and any bereaved locals. Taking his responsibilities seriously, he and his men believe in fighting with a strange code of honor, defending the weak and innocent from harm, even extending some mercy to pagans and the misguided heretics. After all, are not all equal under God's eyes?

Religion: Catholic
Colour: Battleship Gray
Transit: Horseback, alongside wagons

Military: 76 mounted, 220 men at arms
Important Items: [1 Chest of Wealth]

Bonuses: [Warrior of God] +10 to combat rolls against religious enemies. -10 to combat rolls against fellow Christians and civilised Pagans.

1.) Otto and his Hospitallers do what they do best and set up a field hospital to tend to the wounded that will surely accumulate over the course of this siege. Wagons are dismounted and converted to tends, and the building supplies are put to use in constructing serviceable structures.

2.) For offensive actions, the knights and mounted warriors are sent on reconnaissance, picking out weakly guarded areas and other vulnerbilities and relaying them back to the main crusaders force. Afterwards, they join up with the main body of crusaders, aiding in the followup as reinforcements after the initial breakthrough.

As you conquer the city of Zaragoza, it's strange.

You were all expecting some form of resistance. But when you arrive, there are no sentries, no guardsmen, no saracen soldiers. The walls are bare.

The gates are child's play, and you secure the city in a matter of an hour - or even less.

But just as you were pondering this strange turn of events, one of the keen-eyes archers from Mattew's troupe cries out what it is - hearing reports of your massive combined forces bearing down upon them, the mohammedan garrison pulled away rather than sell their lives pointlessly - only to attack your camp!

>>46532435
Otto stands before his men, pleased at the field hospital they have constructed. Their depleted forces may not be enough to form a major part of the assault, but they can at least perform the true function of their holy order.

There goes up a ragged cheer when the Hospitallers spot that the other Crusaders made it over the walls with what looks like minimal resistance - but soon that jubilation turns to horror, as from cover nearby, closer to the field hospital than the city of Zaragoza emerges the full force of their garrison, sallying forth to do as much damage as they can, presumably before retreating back into deeper Iberia to gather reinforcements.

They outnumber him by hundreds. Perhaps even thousands - all bearing down as the hospitallers stand about unarmed, garbed in healer's vestments.

Is this the end? Lord Above, what has his servant done to desrve such an ignominious fate?

That is the thought that flashes through Otto's head in the face of the moslem charge, and he prepares himself to account for his sins alongside his men.

- until the charging force is scattered by a hail of arrows.

Off in the distance, he can see that German youth Mattew marshalling his bowmen. They aim high across an impossible distance, aim and loose. Despite the incredible range, their missiles fall true.

Slowed by this surprise, Otto's attackers stumble and panic. They start to turn this way and that, and the momentum goes all out of them.

And then comes the thunder of hooves. Prince Ludovic of Jerusalem atop his valiant steed bears straight down into the panicking foe, scattering them to the winds as he's flanked by his brave knights.

On the walls holding the city for Christendom stand Crispinus' troops.

And that day, Otto learned what it's like to witness a miracle.
