hey, i'm preparing a space opera cyberpunk campaign, with lovecraftian (but no aliens) elements and i need some idea for the major faction of the game.
basically the earth war destroyed by the elder gods, and the surviving colonies are fighting each other for control.
can you help me?

Maybe I did not get it right, but why would the human colonies fight each other for control? Shouldn't the sight of a great common enemy unite all the colonies under the same banner?

Can you give us more of what you already have? What would gaining the "control" mean for a colony, what will the players do during the sessions (if you've already looked into it), doeas it take place just after the incident or long after?

these are the general guide, the elder gods are unknown for the mayor part of population and faction, that why don't are unite against the common foe. and the one that fight, are because without a central control don't accept other authorities exempt themself, or because major corporation are moved only by money, so initiate war for resource and profit. that drive even the pacific settlement in the position tho create a defensive army, and in extreme case to preventive strike.

and basically, human can be very stupid.

the elder gods should be the common cause to unite everyone to fight them.

TECHNOCRATIC UNION - Born from the scientific and engineering communities of old Earth and propelled into the stars by academic missions, the Technocrats value progress above all else. Only by the proliferation of technology and science can humanity overcome the ancient "Gods' and usher in a golden age of understanding where humanity is no longer vulnerable to the ineffable whims of extra dimensional entities.

THE UNITED RELIGIOUS FEDERATION - A conglomeration formed primarily of the followers of the "Big Five" religions (Christianity Islam Hindu Buddhism Judaism), united in their common belief in universal forces of good and order which will help them overcome the cthonic forces of the Elder Gods. Heathens and Unbelievers led to earth's destruction, by leaving it spiritually unprotected, and now it falls to the faithful to find God/Gods to help them destroy the ancient, crawling doom of primordial chaos as they did at the universes inception.

HUMANITY, INC - born out of the industrial and commercial spacy, Humanity, INC is a conglomerations of various corporate interests that established a presence in space before the fall. With no earth government (that they accept) to direct them, they have formed their own independent society.

UNSL - The United Nations Spacy League represents the largest, most diverse segment of humanity, as well as the last to leave - more like evacuate - Earth before its destruction. Ostensibly formed out of the Old UN, in truth it is more a ruling council directed by those nations with the strongest space presence before the doom, those of the ISS. Canada, America, Russia, Japan, and The European Space Agency (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom). These nations direct what meagre resources and governmental presence could be salvaged from the destruction of earth and believe themselves to be the guardians of humanities planet bound culture

Focus on: The Technocratic Union

The privatization of Space travel and exploration combined with the ever increasing size of education and universities as a business eventually reached a crossroads where the worlds major universities (Oxford, MIT, etc) came to be able to produce and field their own small scale space programs for the purpose of scientific study. These 'student spaceys' were, despite their ostensibly amateur status, often on par with the space programs of smaller second world nations. Forming a network of interdependence and shared data in the spirit of scientific discovery, University driven space exploration united together over international and scholastic boundaries, and functioning alongside government and other privately funded research, formed the forefront of humanities progress into cosmic studies and space colonization. Eventually this would result in humanities first great diaspora, as self sufficient interstellar colonization became the goal of the united scientific communities.

Over time, these colonies would become enclaves at the forefront of scholastic endeavor, international space colonies formed from the best and brightest from all over the world, united by a universal charter and a zeal for scientific discovery. But these clusters of colonies and space stations would not become their own political entity until the Zero Dependence Singularity.

The Zero Dependence Singularity was the tipping point at which humanities space colonies began to not only not require the intervention and support of their mother planet, but were able to ship back and trade resources and energy with Earth at a profitable level. Suddenly these colonies, some of which were decades or even centuries old, were more akin to city states than to simple extensions of a greater societies influence. Filled with the ambitious young and the descendants of risk taking explorers and talented engineers, they bartered aggressively for their independence, exchanging open sourced technologies and rare resources for increasing financial and political self sufficiency. Although remaining nominally a part of earth, this confederacy of colonies would be independent in all but name until Earths own problems increasingly made it impossible for it to police the outer reaches of humanities growth, or to effectively reprimand the alliance of colonies that would become the Technocratic Union when they finally openly declared their own independence.

As befitting the oldest post-Terran society, the Technocracies space stations and colonies are among the largest and most advanced known. These habitats, organized loosely as Sprawls, are each self governing and determinant, but loyal to the overall confederacy of the Technocracy in a pact of mutual defense and interest.

As befitting cities founded by Scholars, pedagogy is generally of the utmost importance in technocratic society, and the civil if not cultural and social center of each Sprawl is it's own local University, fully funded by it's own civil government. Enrollment is open to all citizens of the Technocracy, and admittance is based purely on academic merit. Attendance to a university is not mandatory, but in practice there are strong social and economic forces enacted against those who do not pursue some form of higher learning. It is a society where even a janitor is expected to have some form of degree. Usually in the humanities, which is usually derided as 'less important' in the STEM and Applied Science dominated Technocracy, which has little use for artistic pursuits, especially in the face of humanities extinction.

Although founded in a spirit of cooperation and open academic exchange, anyone who has experienced academic politics know they are just as cutthroat and ruthless as any civil form. It has become more important to be responsible for ones work, than to simply produce it. The game changing profiteering by Humanity, INC via the open sourced technologies the Union traded early on have since stymied any high minded notions as free and open sharing of technology. Simply put, you are either a brilliant mind on the fast track to tenure, or you are someones intern.

Steal the Ousters from Hyperion, colonists that abandoned Old Earth's government and lived and evolved in 0 g for hundreds of years during the colonization period. Their bodies are now almost two and a half meters tall with thin, flexible frames sporting monkey feet and prosthetic tails with plenty of attachments for everything between grabbing things, stabbing things, electrocuting things, and data transfers and more.

They have massive, spidery power armors for moving on land since their bodies are barely functional under 1 g.

Perhaps they've been building tech by listening to the whispers of the elder gods?
