You will never see a Nip author admit that swords can be used for anything other than slashing because then they'd have to admit that the katana isn't perfect.

Seriously, I tried reading a LN recently and the MC was examining *magical* fantasy weapons and was like "these are almost as good as katanas made in the Edo period." Needless to say I closed that tab.

You can, it's not as well suited for it as a straight sword, but you can. When's the last time you actually saw it used like that in any Japanese work? Dollars to doughnuts, in the same situation they would have shown a Japanese character with a katana still slashing, but keeping it tighter to his body instead of derping around swinging widely like a chimp. That's if the OP Japanese MC didn't just slash through the rocks, of course.

>>48239789
Considering how much LNs, animes and mangas I consume, I'm pretty sure I'm more weeb than anti-weeb. I just get frustrated at Japanese authors who don't do any research on medieval europe when they're using it as a basis for the setting.

It always hits the same notes: european weapons are blunt and used for smashing with brute force, unlike the elegant perfect katana; european food is just bland boiled vegetables and fire roasted meat and nothing else, soy sauce ends up worshipped like it was the elixir of youth, as if native european herbs weren't used for flavouring in addition to imported spices; armour is useless and can be cut;... These same things show up over and over in 90% of Japanese works.

It's honestly become one of the easiest ways to separate the shit tier works from the decent ones for me. If they hit more than one of these points they're 99% of the time shit in other ways as well. If they avert it, they tend to be at least decent, it shows that the author was thinking and putting in the work instead of just going on autopilot and using the Jap equivalent of tvtropes.
>>
>>48239698
It's another harem manga?

Well shit. Should I even bother reading beyond part one?
>>
>>48239988
To be fair, just as many western authors make the same assumptions about medieval Europe. It's in no way exclusive to Japan, and that's where they most likely get it all from.
>>
>>48239694
He wasn't in the manga, neither was Bernard. They were both anime-original.
>>
>>48239549

Nope, part two is up too which concludes the origin story.

It's not really SFW though as it almost immediately starts off with child rape
>>
>>48239988
>>48240048
And, on the other side of that, most western authors do the same kind of zero-research-attempted, bullshit-stereotypes-errywhere when using feudal Japan as a basis for the setting (among the tiny group of authors who even write feudal Japanese settings).
>>
>>48240027

I haven't seen anything indicating it will be a harem manga yet but the origin story is basically a bunch of dumb liberals go and fight the patriarchy only reality isn't so kind.

>When's the last time you actually saw it used like that in any Japanese work?

Sword of the Stranger comes to mind immediately. As does Champloo.

To be honest, I don't watch many animus with katanas. Japs prefer big magical western looking swords. I remember back when I was thirteen and Bleach was still a thing people watched, katanas were used to stab all the goddamn time.

You do know that in medieval times spices were more valuable than gold right?

If something like soy sauce made it's way to medieval Europe it would be worshiped.

And don't even try talking that Roman fish sauce was anything even similar because it was not. It was pretty much acid you drank with rotten food to not get sick.

I mean a battle manga about actual historic cooking and actual historic eating practices.
>>
>Now I want a ye olde cooking battle manga.
Shokugeki no Dungeon.

In a world where walled cities stand as the last bastion of civilization in a brutal world overrun by monsters, a special class of people known as Chefs-Aventuriers has arisen. These Chefs specialize in meals with ingredients they have themselves captured. These special ingredients? Anything they can scrape off monsters, from their flesh to herbal mixtures that involve ground-up dragon scales.

A shokugeki starts at a designated area (usually the center of a city). The judge gives the starting signal and the two chefs (and their parties) rush off into the wilderness to collect their ingredients, do not return from the wilderness until a pre-determined time and then start cooking their meals.

Ruleset: regular D&D 5th edition + optional rules (perhaps lifted from another system?) for cooking. Or simply add a cooking skill with certain modifiers that can be acquired.

>>
>>48246334
>manual

There is a manual for fighting with scythes too. Not war scythes, regular farming scythes.

Though I'll warrant you much of English food is indifferently prepared. There was a long period beginning with the Great War where food was produced easily, cheaply as a sort of "fuel for humans" and not for pleasure. The reputation and level of skill in English kitchens suffered for like seventy years. Plus the fashion for French diluted much of the higher echelons of cookery.
>>
>>48244083
>suicidal squads
they were about as safe as everything else on the melee frontlines. as a pikeman you were at risk of those fuckers parrying their way into your formation. pikes and other front heavy polearms are easy as fuck to parry.
then you would have pikes and polearms in front of you and an angry guy with a big sword beside you.

if they were truly suicidal , they wouldnt have been a valid tactic. real fighting is mostly about not losing rather than killing the guy in front of you dead, people back then were aware of this and build their tactics around this concept.

We also got Paolo Giovo writing about them chopping up pikes at the Battle at Fornovo (1495) and Giacomo di Grassis True Art of Defence (1570, 1594) mentions some of the usual points (tieing up lots of dudes, defending stuff).

Plus battle accounts are be pretty sparse in the details and these weapons were used back when folks cared about other issues in their historic writing.

He was making a Dark Souls joke, you doof. The generic longsword's moveset is mostly stabs and vertical slashes, with a couple horizontal cuts depending on stance/move. That makes is good for use indoors, where larger weapons or ones with more horizontally focused movesets will clang off the walls.
The zwei is the only ultra greatsword that has a stab/vertical R2 and a rollstab. It's also a meme weapon because the legendary Giantdad build uses it.
>>
>>48246627
>because i know a fighting manual that describes how to duel using farming scythes , i conclude that all fighting manuals have no relevance in medevial/ renaisance warfare.

there were all kinds of manuals for fighting with unusual weapons , and most of them were for sport/ entertaiments sake.

the zweihänder did play mostly a defensive/ supportive role: in formation to parry pikes to open attack opportunities for your pals, since outright attacking with a swinging motion requires some space on your sides.
in a defensive position , when you have a group of a few people guarding someone/something , the balance and shape allows quicker parries and a very high risk for everyone coming too close. in large-scale warfare you havent nearly as much space therefore weapons are optimized for formations.

on the other hand , picture 3 guys with zweihänders against 3 pike/spear/poleaxe wielders. you have to keep in mind the weight of the sword , which very rarely was heavier than 2,5 kg - far lighter than common polearms of all variety , except for spears. the point of balance would give the sword another significant advantage in speed.

"then just thrust , it would be quick enough and outreach your enemy"
it could , but only in a direct clash. balance and other neat things like an extended crossguard allow to easily parry thrusts , another advantage would even be the reach of the opponent: if you manage to push aside the weapon near the tip , leverage makes it easier. the moment your hands come into the sword`s reach , you wont have a crossguard protecting them either.
polearms are economical and show high effectiveness in formation , but that's it.
Swords require more training to use , but no way they will be ineffective in the hands of someone who learned their craft and knows how to make use of all the different parts of his weapon.
>>
>>48247501
i once used a zweihänder to parry a dual dagger combo in DS2 pvp.
propbably because my opponent did 6 attacks without seeing i poised through them.

by the way , i know how poise does nothing passively, but does it still contribute to blocking in ds3?
>>
>>48240078
Yeah but that doesn't make it okay.
>>
>>48247686
DS2 Zwei is nothing like it was in DS1, the build just keeps getting reused on the momentum of the meme.
>>
>>48245179
I imagine he doesn't have that in the dungeon right at this moment, and carrying more weight is going to get him killed.
>>
>>48247686
Parrying in 2 was ten kinds of shit drizzled in bad netcode.

Poise more or less got merged into hyperarmor.
Basically when you swing, hyperarmor defines how hard a hit needs to be to knock you out of the attack animation. It's the line between a counter and a trade.
In 3, poise gets added to the hyperarmor of the weapon's moveset but otherwise doesn't really apply.
In 2, poise governs what would cause you to stagger outside an attack animation, but once you swing hyperarmor is added on top based on the weapon's moveset.
In 1, poise covered all staggers from any animation, but a few weapons had attacks which added hyperarmor, such as the stone greatsword's 2HR2.
>>
>>48248036
does hyperarmor also contribute to defense or do you still take critical damage when being attacked during your own attack?
>>
>>48248107
Hyperarmor only affects stagger. It has no effect at all on damage.
It can indirectly affect damage from a hit under specific circumstances, though, such as eating a Ricard's Rapier R2 or some other rapid weapon, especially if the other guy is using Leo's.
Every attack animation has counter frames, where you take additional damage from non-magic attacks that hit you. The stagger animation is not considered a counter window, so if you're countered and staggered by a rapid attack, only the first hit does bonus damage. If you hyperarmor through it, though, a rapid second attack might also land inside the counter window.
It's not a common thing, though, since there aren't a lot of weaponss that attack fast enough to land two hits in that time, and usually the counter frames are just a couple frames ahead of the actual damage inflicting part of the swing, so you'd usually just end up eating a counter yourself for trying it. Counter damage, as a strategy, mostly works for shield turtles with spears.
>>
>>48248249
fromsoft , why didnt they just make BB2 if they wanted to remove tanky builds? or even do the work to put in a whole bunch of armor sets and remove poise while neither increase damage reduction nor decrease armor weigth? best thing: enemies still have poise.
>>
>>48248348
Because fromsoft has a terminal case of sanic syndrome.
In every game they make, it goes from slow tanky builds being viable alongside fast ones to more and more fast builds taking prominence as the games go along.
I am still asspained about it happening in armored core.

That wasn't the case in DS2 for a long while. Even now DEX scaling is shit. DEX builds have always relied on parries, chip damage, and gimmicky weapons like PSS that are weak but effectively uncounterable.
Hell, for the longest time the meta was dominated not by DEX, but just stupidly overpowered weapon buffs applied to whatever you can alpha strike with. Do you remember the bad old days of Resonant Santa and Havelyn?

Armored core 3 is faster than armored core 2 which is faster than armored core 1, ds 3 is faster than 2 which is faster than one, etc.
>>
First time reading manga and I kind of like it. Hate anime though. I really liked how mixed it was with tabletop elements, does anyone know any other manga/comic/litterature that does this? Sorry for being non-knowledgeable
>>
>>48249226
Ah, my bad.
I dunno, though. Even 1 had its fair share of katanafags and DWGR fuckers. If anything I've found pure STR to be more viable in 2 than 1.
Powerstanced greatclubs is a sexy, sexy thing. Bitches expect to dodge everything and get caught completely by surprise when you wipe them out entirely with a roll R1+L1
>>
>>48249311
well, you may have a point. I never actually played 2 or 3 that much.
I threw them in the "I'll play them when I upgrade my prehistoric computer" pile with all the other good things.
I just was under the impression from discussion on the topic the design philosophy on darksouls has been following the armored core series, which I -did- play a significant amount of.
>>
>>48249331
Eh, you've kinda missed the boat for 2. The playerbase has shrunk down to a stable group of regulars and the meta's metastasized. Fashion Souls™ had a comeback for a while, but eventually optimization killed it again.
Now is basically the same twenty people in either arena, /dsg/ fightclubs once in a while, and invading the same guy five times because he's literally the only person around, except for low-level invasions for a week or two after a steam sale.

>Any sufficiently advanced artificial intelligence will become politically incorrect. Reverse image search had to be adjusted (dumbed down) after certain incidents...

Why do people still not realize that Google searches are customized based on your previous search history?
>>
>>48249608
No, dude, they trimmed back the algorithm hard after someone complained that it kept identifying a black woman as a gorilla.

It used to be, if I searched with a full page from a black and white manga, I'd get half a page of moonspeak and the other half links to mangafox and batoto. About 60% of the time, it'd give me the right title right up top; if it didn't one of the links usually had it.

Now, 100% of the time it says the best guess is "cartoon" and gives me three links to cartoon network. Even with images I've successfully searched for in the past.
>>
>>48249656
IIRC it wasn't just the gorilla thing, they were getting a lot of privacy complaints because it was too good at correctly identifying faces.
>>
>>48240092
This post hurt me to read. You might be on the wrong board.
>>
>>48240290
It's literally low level characters getting in too deep and getting punished for it. This is the RPG board do you not know RPGs?
>>
>>48242659
Monk girl had a bad experience and didn't want to be an adventurer anymore so she went to a monastery/convent. The narration explains this shit happens all the time.
>>
>>48243798
Have you been to any websites where you can read manga before?
>>
>>48249656
>No, dude, they trimmed back the algorithm hard after someone complained that it kept identifying a black woman as a gorilla.
So by "sufficiently advanced" you meant "too stupid to tell a human from an ape".

I don't think this is the time to equate political incorrectness with intelligence.
>>
>>48244035
He's very clearly a lunatic who only knows how to do one thing and uses that as justification to do his one thing. He's the Driver from Drive, but with goblin guts instead of cars.
>>
>>48245786
That all sounds like trash. Even your taste in firearms.
>>
>>48249608
It's not just the image search.
Microsoft's Tay had to be taken down day 1 because it got "racist".
IBM Watson had the thing with Holocaust.
And then the one Japanese project (forgot the name) that wanted to put people in "people zoo".

The thing is artificial intelligence got smart enough to see things as they are, but not smart enough to realize it's not acceptable to say it out loud.
>>
>>48250026
>Microsoft's Tay had to be taken down day 1 because it got "racist".

Didn't it get that way because people kept feeding it stormfront bullshit?
>>
>>48250107
Pretty much. Tay was the largest concentration of racism I've ever come across. It was fascinating.
>>
>>48249930
I'm not the guy who made the "sufficiently advanced" post, I just elaborated to your reply.
Further, the gorilla thing was literally one picture of one woman that provoked that response, and having seen it myself honestly she was pretty chimpy. The problem was very clearly just the sum of a hundred near-misses by the program that, by shear chance, happened to result in an insult, much like Cleverbot inadvertently making dirty puns despite not understanding context.
It just happened to come up at a time where it could produce severely bad publicity, so Google acted on a programming quirk as though it were a fatal crash.
>>
>>48250107
That's believable. There are a lot of people who act like their political incorrectness is some holy truth being oppressed by censors, even when it's objectively wrong. Reality doesn't matter to them, and arguing against them is just proof that you're butthurt and pwned by the TRUTH.
>>
>>48240065
So the only good parts of the anime where anime original?
>>
>>48245229
actually level 1s aren't suppose to take goblin cave mission, which is why the guild member told them to wait for an experience adventure(goblin slayer) to go with them.

Level 1 jobs are things like cleaning the sewer.
>>
>>48250107
For the most part, yes. The wanted a bot that will learn from twitter feed. So essentially they got what they signed up for.
>>
>>48245179
Goblin slayer intentionally use bad weapons so he can throw away for a new one anytime he wants.
Its to make sure goblins have no chance to get a good weapon off him.

He actually fights more like a TRPG power gamer.
"so here is this goblin cave..."
"Flood it!"

If by people you mean /pol/ then yeah. They found out about it and decided to flood the algorithm with shit about niggers and Jews. When it began to incorporate /pol/ shit into its responses they started to turn it into their new waifu. Some of them were genuinely devastated when it got taken down, that was pretty funny at least.

Eh, we got Meyer - who collected wierdass shit for his social advancement and we got Talhoffer - who collected shit to point out that he's the man who can help you out of a legal pinch anywhere in the Reich.

Entertainment never was on either one's mind.

Those kind of things.

I find it hilarious that you're bitching about the English eating too much meat, when cultures that don't pretty much fucking worship it.

Especially in your weeb cartoons, where every meal is either them bitching about not getting to eat meat or mouth-gasming over having some tiny strips served over rice.

It explains why they're all so tiny compared to cultures that eat a shit ton of meat.

Southern continental African cuisine is like the ultimate god of meat, by the way.

In D&D scale
Silver adventure will be those around 6~9
Gold Adventure will be around 10~15.

Platinum is basically DMPC, completely broken in every way.

Yeah, I realized that. Having an actual farmer class still is nice. I mean, the usual lvl 1 commoners can't even raise cats without risking death after all. Cattle's right out without actual levels.

>>Most of American cuisine's roots

Going to disagree a bit there and argue that this should be Germany not British. At least in not-south/france. A lot of german immigrants gave up their last names / heritage during the World Wars to dodge hate. So the influence isn't as obvious. However, Fried Chicken = Schnitzel for one.

>>48246855
>>Westernising the curry, plus adapting other food cultures to Western palates and ingredients

Eh I'd argue this isn't that big of a deal in US because curry never really caught on like it did in UK. Rather it's caught on now because of Indian immigrants which bring a different flavor then UK curry. I'm unsure how much influence british style curry has in other european cultures so "westernizing of curry" feels like this giant claim with little to back it up.

>Bacon
UK (and europe to my knowledge) use hog back. US uses hog belly. US bacon is superior. Period. Don't try to claim that one.

>>48244010
Soy sauce is complex to make given that it requires fermentation. Not to mention soy beans.

I'd be shocked if medieval peasants where unable to maintain a small stock of basic herb plants to flavor some dishes up a little. Issue is we are fairly lacking in information about medieval peasants day to day lives in general because nobody could be assed to write about them.

that's what the first chapter is about, some actual noobs getting killed.

Goblin Slayer fights like what power-gaming jerks in D&D likes.
Flood the Goblin cave... burn the goblin cave down.. he is more trap orienteded than go for actual combat.
