What do you guys think about my idea of converting a horde of Basilean Men-At-Arms into two nurglish-looking varangur Bloodsworn regiments?

The backstory of my army is that it was a former Mercenary Company that hid its devoting to their dark patron so as to be able to sell their services throughout the civilsed world.

The men-at-arms in question:
http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/basilea/product/basilean-men-at-arms-40-figures.html

I'm looking for some professional and somewhat flashy looking standard infantry and thus far these miniatures are the ones that closest resembles the vision of them in my mind's eye. If anyone know of similar miniatures for a reasonable price let me know as I've heard that these aren't of the best quality.
>>
>>48163669
They're good for conversions.

Problematic:
Arms are a bit large
They're a taller than normal
They've all got facial hair, even if the store page didn't paint them that way.

They need trimming. You can find people that clipped them to size, and you can find some examples of conversions and kit-bashing floating around.
>>
>>48158859
It's handy if you have elves or dwarves from another manufacturer and want the warmchines without crews. The regular sets they sell areundeniably better deals hwoever, especially as you can pay less than a dollar a mini depending on where you buy them from.
>>
>>48164048
That they are tall with facial hair is just great imo. After all the usual not!chaos-army tend to be composed of larger chaps and a mercenary without a beard or a moustasche is just not fit for the life of a sellsword.
>>
>>48164429
>Sounds good
More specifically on "large"
Tall, yes
Disproportionate, yes.

The arms are disproportionate, as is the torso.

There's a funny story behind the Baselians I saw. They were done through China, and the Chinks' CNC machines making the molds couldn't use the file format. Rather than buy software to convert the files the boss just sat some intern down to open the models, and re-create them in the compatible file format. Mantic didn't know what was going on until they started getting the sprues and realized something was wrong and investigated to find they just paid $$$ for molds that weren't even made from the files they sent.

TL;DR
China, lol

Wyrd got out of it OK as in their figures actually come out of China looking nice. Even their limited edition models are plastic thanks to their current arrangement. So I wanted to get into WHFB for some time now but when I finally saved up the money the End Times started. I decided to wait, see what happens and when the dust settled I saw Sigmarines.

So now I'm trying to decide, on which replacement to follow, 9th Age or Kings of War and I wanted to ask if I can have your opinions on pro's and con's of both and how do they compare to each other, purely rule-wise (since I will probably assemble an army from cheap ebay sales). To clarify, I'm going for the closest thing there is to Bretonnia in each respective system.

Will probably repost this question in the Fantasy Battle thread.
>>
>>48168754
Is there any reason you couldn't follow both games?

Also for KoW the Bretonnian equivalent is the Brotherhood.
>>
>>48168754
In KoW the closest equivalent of Brettonians is the Brotherhood, which is largely the same thing with the addition of water elementals that the Brotherhood summons. The fluff is moved around a little with the setting's equivalent of Jesus giving an order of knights an incredibly powerful set of armor that they use.

As far as mechanics goes, Kings of War emphasizes much more streamlined rules rather than having lots of special rules for each faction. It uses height categories instead of true line of sight, it doesn't use model removal so you can do multibasing for dioramas and such. There are no random charge distances, and there is premeasuring. Turns are much shorter than they are in WHFB(Which 9th largely emulates) so games are much faster. You can play the game where everything during one turn is done by one person, making it possible to play with chess clocks. The game has been thoroughly playtested so each faction is actually balanced.
>>
>>48168865
The main cons that are brought up is that individual heroes don't have as many options as they do in WHFB. You generally only choose what your character is riding, what spells if any, and a single magic item to give them. Magic is also much simpler, so you don't have any of the crazy faction specific spells that you would have in WHFB/9th. I didn't like the crazy apocalypse spells in WHFB, but I still would like to see some more additions.

Also what >>48168844
said. There is nothing stopping you from using the same army in both games unless you want to multibase, in which case you would only be able to play Kings of War. They are both fun games which both proudly stick it to the End of Times/AoS. I generally stick with KoW as that is what people at my store play, and I don't need to reference the rules and grind the game to a halt as I try to figure something out.
>>
>>48168865
>There are no random charge distances
No, there are.
Only for Shambling+Surge though, and it's equally good for regular moves as well as actual charges.
>>
>>48156387
So, AoS player here, converting my bases to square so that I can branch out to multiple games. I was wondering, where do you guys buy your non-mantic miniatures? Or Square bases?
>>
How are the beastmen? Theres an event at my lgs this weekend and i want to school some nerds. I have 3 years of whfb expirience and I played one game of KoW (crushed it) 4 months ago.
>>
>>48172771
>Square bases?
Renedra have plenty of cheap bases.
>>
>>48173461
They're very solid: fast, ignore lots of terrain restrictions and hit like a truck on the charge. In a series of Australian tournaments Herd armies had the highest average kill attrition rate against their opponents.

>>48175236
What kind of builds work well?
>>
>>48172771
>Non-Mantic
There are tons of manufacturers for rank and file fantasy stuff like MoM, Avatars of War, Perry, Shieldwolf, and even the Frostgrave plastics which make good militia mobs, fleshlings, and tribal warriors.
>>
>>48172771
You can just find circular base conversion trays which should be fine for all but heroes, which will be on their base alone.

Solid base, far removed from Bloodbowl, with a real fluid feel to it. Several elements in need of attention though, with refs being a thing, but being near useless (given the pointlessness of fouling) and one of the main player roles (as well as one of the rare ones) being under-powered. League system somehow manages to be both over complicated -and- bland. Balance wise it's O.K. with a few outlying teams of the 24 currently available.

All in all it's in need of a 2nd edition and from what we've heard so far, Mantic are well aware of the current shortcomings and will fix these issues in 2nd.

Mantic have always sold individual sprues, since they first started in 2012.

They also haven't added any new sprues since they released Orcs (I think) in 2013 (I think).

It's something they still do because they always did, but they're not rushing to add all their new sprues; only the first and most basic ones.

Also, you've gotta buy things like bases separately, and they come in mostly unhelpful multiples.

I suspect it's intended for possibly someone wanting to do a wholesale deal or something.

Are they ever going to add Kings of War rules for Blaine?
>>
>>48212400
I was wondering about that myself. They even made a mini for him.
>>
>>48212448
They only added a handful of rules for Dungeon Saga characters with the campaign book. None of the other ones like that vampire lord or the naiad stalker have been given anything yet. I imagine that you are meant to use them as generic characters, as they have recommended using the naiad hero as a regular stalker and the Basilean one as a regular abess.
>>
>>48212498
Maybe they will get rules in the 3'rd edition in 5 years or something?
>>
>>48214470
I have no idea why they would completely change editions to add a few stat blocks in. Even then KoW doesn't really need another edition change right now. If anything it is much more likely that any new characters would be added through supplements. The historical one is coming next, so nothing can be expected soon.
>>
>>48214499
Wait, I need to check it tomorrow but isn't there rules to add heroes from DS in the new campaign book ? Because I sure remember something about it.
>>
>>48214662
As I said that only adds Valandor, Mortibris, Ba'el, and the four main dudes. Nothing for Drech'nok or any of the other heroes that they have put out.
>>
>>48214499
I just figure that they might in the future release a new edition that includes all the new armies in Uncharted Empires, campaign rules, maybe some updates and updated fluff.
>>
>>48214993
A compendium hardly warrants a new version name, even at the level of Rules-Cyclopedia. Major mechanical changes like the ones between 1e and 2e would of course be a different story.
>>
>>48216199
Sure, but it's not like they heavily overhauled the game from the first edition either. Most of second edition are a bunch of tweaks and expansion material put into a new edition.
>>
KOW-Newfag here, I have 2 questions;

>What's the Australian scene like in terms of players and general support? More specifically WA.

>Is Abyss a good army to start with? Because value for money and mini-count are already 2 big pluses imo-senpai-desu.
>>
>>48220486
>good army to start with?
Honestly, I haven't found an army that's "harder" to play than the others yet. They're all very well balanced on the whole.

Better if you play enough mock-games to start understanding the tactics, then choose an army based on what you like to use.

Or just what you like the looks / fluff of

For example, abyssals are typically a mix of glass cannon protected by horde, have no war machines (48 inch ranged attacks), have only firebolts (18 inch range shorter than standard 24), have only one unique monster (literally only one monster on the board, ever), and various list-building considerations such as their nimble cavalry are limited as troops.

Then consider you can take 25% of your points as allies which can round out weaknesses, which is great since I think evil armies compliment each other better than the good aligned armies do.

>Australian scene
Kind of want to know this too. Not an Ausfag, but still.

>>
Every faction should get a symbol, IMO. Seems odd to have been lacking them so far.
>>
>>48224259
Because iconography differs within individual factions. They have put out several symbols for Dwarves, Elves, Undead ect. through decals on their web store, with Morgoth's iconography being the most common, but still differing from others like Mortibris's iconography. As each faction isn't necessarily united, giving them all one set of iconography wouldn't make sense.
>>
>>48224677
Surely we could have have symbols for Basilia- a society so drenched in religion ought to about in symbolism. Likewise an Empire like Golloch ought to employ symbols. The Varangur should have symbols as well for the aspects of Korgaan. And the Brotherhood really ought to have heraldry and symbols for something as rich in tradition as the Eternal Watch which was instituted after the Winter War.

I suppose this is just part of a broader complaint that there is not enough flesh on the bones of the fluff. At least we have some bones though.

I am with you on everything else or course, having examples of specific dwarven holds, vampire bloodlines and such with preferred tactics, color schemes, and of course iconography ranging from a coat of arms to a simple pattern for the more savage factions. To say that each faction has nothing is somewhat of an overstatement.

>9th Age
>No company backing it

Mom Miniatures and especially Avatars of War seem to. Avatars of War have apparently dropped warthrone and renamed their product lines to conform with 9thAge conventions.

>Kings of War
>Balanced by a Studio
Not quite the case, they delegate and awful lot of stuff to the rules committee who have used open betas for balancing, especially KoW2nd ed.

>Mantic might go out of business
I've seen no evidence to support this, yet contrarily Mantic have reported problems keeping up with demand.

I think that he means more that you aren't going to see a company pushing 9th Age rulebooks and conveniently packaged starter sets on to store shelves. I like the direction that both games are going anyways. What would really be tragic is if points values for AoS rounded up enough people to the point where interest is lost in both games.
>>
>>48233281
I just can't see that happening though, AOS's core rules are such a sorry mess that slapping half-assed points on it isn't going to fix anything.

I'm sorry for your loss, anon.

As to the customer service, I've dealt with them a few times before. They can be a bit slow if there is high demand but thus far they have always provided good service. A few years back I was missing 2 bases from a mega army box and I got a handwritten apology along with a free paint pot. Things aren't that amazing now simply because they've expanded too much to give that much care to each individual customer, but it's still nice and reflects well on how they treat their customers.

>>48240724
Don't be sorry, I met her straight out of university at a much wealthier friends family party. She was over 50 years older than me. We were together for mutual benefit, she had companionship and I now have my own home and a small amount of wealth.

It wasn't easy especially concerning the early years sleeping arrangements and the later years of caring for her in her ill health, but now if I continue to live frugally, aside from the rare treats I will mostly be set for life.

It's nice and sad to read that their customer service isn't as good as it once was, but as you said that's because they are growing bigger as a company.

Some threads ago I said I'd play some 6k points games in 6mm scale and some anon wanted to know.
Herd vs Forces of nature. Cardboard proxies worked fine enough for the moment, Microworld stuff is on the way.
It went kinda good. The games lastet about 5 hours and we played up to 8 turns, and it ended in draws usually. The main problem was the lack of appropriate terrian and that we always got stuck in the middle, with some big blocks fighting and the others waiting patiently behind.
We'll have to arrange the terrian better.
Still, it was a lot of fun, having loads of units to move is nice, strategy counts a lot and it's more challenging.

Still need more Lycans, maybe I'll drop the Giant Eagles, and the nine shamans did their job fine. Naids with ensnare and the salamanders with their def 5 can be reallynasty.
Here some shitty pics.

Definitely worth it. Yes, I was only there for the money and the home, and she wanted me for companionship due to being a widow. There was no secret about it at first but as she got more frail she desperately wanted to believe I was there out of love and I gave her that, I did my best to make her believe I truly fell in love with her.

Lies of course, I didn't really feel anything for her, not bad or good. Now that she is gone I have more time on my hands than I've had in years and I'm still adjusting to it.

I've always been interested in miniature games and have picked up the odd pieces of Games Workshop in the past, but I wanted to give Mantic a try.

>>
>>48261706
Lots of ex-High Elf players because apparently they were pretty good in WHFB. Their lists pretty much resemble their old WHFB lists because it's what they've got.
Lots of Undead by Mantic, since it was the best line for early adoption, more than we need and we first adapted to anti-Elf.

WHFB players collapsed into a blackhole of deathstar builds buffing elven archers. This more or less died out in the regular players already, but new people keep gravitating towards it. Lots of butthurt towards fliers, individuals, flying individuals, and cheap fodder because of this.

Takes longer than you'd think for people to get used to the idea of actually flanking, rather than min-max builds.
>>
>>48261706
One Elf player, played today, lots of fliers and archer hordes
Goblin player, extremely good, varied armies
Ogre player, a bit new
Demon player
Ratkin player, lots of shooting and stormvermins
Undead players with lots of independent char
2 Herd players
2 Twilight elves players
Right now there is also one building up a Trident army, another one a Ratkin army and another one building a Herd army.

It will be the focal point for a demo game I'll be running, with the Ogres trying to cleanse the sacred site of a Varangur clan that has camped nearby. I'm thinking that Spellcasters will get to roll double the number of dice for their spells while standing on the terrain, which should spice things up. Finally had my Deadzone starter set ship today. Turns out, there was some confusion about my paypal which resulted in them freezing my order.

Ghouls are the unsung heroes of the Undead list. 60 pts for a Sp 6 troop makes a fantastic bit of chaff, and At 10 me 4+ means that they are just strong enough that you can't ignore them if they get in a sneaky flank.

I guess I could give them a magic item to make them more reliable.

I'm using Revenant troops as mine, for thematic reasons mostly, but would totally use ghouls in a second in a 100% competitive list.

Steadfast maybe ?

Yeah, that sounds like a good fit.

Kind of wish we had a /tgg/ board.

I'm pretty sure that's just reddit. These threads also slows to a crawl during weekends. I guess people are out playing games and stuff?

There simply isn't as much to talk about. The game doesn't have a jaw dropping setting to draw in discussion, and the gameplay itself doesn't warrant too much either because of how straightforward it is.

Any suggestions on what to use for dopplegangers?

I've read Hellfire & Stone and it's not very outdated at all.

I've made a review for those interested.

I enjoy talking about the hobby aspect about KoW. But maybe we should instead just have a hobby general that is about ways people can make their own fluff, what minis to get and what would be a good conversion? I realise we already have the WIP general, but we don't have a brainstorm general.

Thanks anon. How big is that table? You've got the lines meeting from one side to the other with lots behind in reserve. That would probably be another to get stuck in the middle, you might not have had enough space to manouvre all those units.

Gee wizz a game of that size looks fun though.
