This is going to sound really gay but do you guys know of any decent painting services or individual painters that could do a (small) army's worth of models? I just can't handle my backlog anymore and I prefer to take my time on individual models for the skirmish wargames I play and D&D game i'm in, which isn't very productive toward big ass armies like in KoW or 40k. But I hate showing up every other week with an unpainted army..

>Posted this in the last thread but it was already in autosage

I live in florida where it gets super humid, I've been working with an airbrush (Paasche VL w/ Blue testors air compressor) it's been fine for about 2 months but recently it's started spitting water. So I bought a Paasche inline water trap and installed it on the hose it worked great for about 10 minutes and then started spitting again. I've gotten a few comments ranging from "You need a better compressor." to "The humidity is too high to paint even with a water trap" has anyone encountered this problem before and if so what did you find was the solution?

Responded in the other thread; do you not have a trap as part of your regulator?
>>
>>48110647

This may sound obvious but you know it's not cheap right?

http://www.denofimagination.com/ - gives you like 5 levels of quality, based in poland.

DO NOT USE -http://bluetablepainting.com/

They drybrush everything, Person A sends them money, they use the funds to fund themselves, person B sends them money, they use this for Person A's stuff, Person C sends them money, they use this for person A and B etc... not necessarily scammers just shit business people (and painters)
>>
>>48110784

I'm not looking for cheap. I mean, if you saw my backlog you'd know i'm not shy about spending money on my hobby.
>>
>>48110813
Yeah sure, but USA, Canada, UK, etc?
>>
>>48110839

USA.
>>
>>48110813

Well I listed one there you can use but really just google

"army painting service" probably "+ usa"

Otherwise, you'll ship the stuff to country X and no doubt have to pay import charges
They'll ship it back and you may, again, have to pay import charges.

No I don't that testors compressor is like a starter hunk of junk, other than making air it doesn't do anything. If it wasn't $9 I probably wouldn't have bought it.

I'm heading to a nearby hobby lobby now to take a look at the compressors they have, see if I can find anything. I think the problem in general is that I wanted to start off with the minimum and build up from there but it seems that's just gonna cost me more money in the long run.
>>
>>48110968
The fuck are you on about? That's an airbrush not a mouth fedora.
>>
>>48110707
You need to get a better compressor. An Aspire TC908 can be picked up for about $150. Hassle free, plug and play.

Id think about upgrading that brush too. Once you have the basics down, look at an Iwata hp-cs 'eclipse'. Or a Badger of any variety.

DO NOT under any circumstance use Frontline, or Blue Table for comission work.

Blue Table just flat out sucks, their standard is very low.
Frontline - I used to hang out with a couple guys that do comission work for Frontline. They were ok, but didnt seal, used cheap/bad primer, and various other unprofessional habits. One of them also steals from people he does local comissions for. Im guessing this explains why he moves to a different city once a year.

Take a red 2 steps up from your basecoat, and edge highlight the cloth. Then take that same red, thin it to the consistency of fat-free milk, and brush very thin layers on the high points of the robes (top of head, top of folds). Let the layers fully dry before applying the next one. Building up brighter spots like this adds depth and looks great. Getting the consistency right is key.

Looks like you hit it a little too hard. The lighter the highlight is from the basecoat, the less spray you need.

I would just take a white and edge highlight the hell out of it. Hit everything, rivets too. It will look pretty awesome.

I was going for Iron Hands originally but thought if I heavily went with bionic conversions and add a few Chaos units like a Lord I could make them renegades under Black Legion.

I don't know if I'm just being lazy with the coats I put on but the paint on primer doesn't help. I've heavy black is hard regardless. I would like to try glazing as even the grey looks a bit flat but maybe a dry brush would make >>48113272

>>48113993

>>
>>48113784
Hmmm, thanks for the tip but that sounds a bit excessive compared to my needs.
You see, I DM a PF campaign for friends and since I'm the only one with hobby experience I also paint all the models we need.

Models for PCs get (a lot of) extra attention of course and for the new fire-focused wizard I thought it'd be cool to have his metal staff have that cool heat-effect.

But I'm not going out and buying stuff especially for that, not while I already have washes and glazes for pretty much all colours.

Actually, I asked advice on colour schemes for another model here in a previous thread.
And since this is WIP I'll see if I can get a decent pic of that model which is about halfway done now.

Took a pic, it's kinda crappy but the best I can do at short notice in artificial light.

The gold's got two layers with one highlight of Burnished Gold to go before washes and more highlights.
The red armour plates hava basecoat and two washes (Carroburg shade and Devlan). The red cloth has the base and a wash of Devlan.
Shame the sleaves are badly visible, those are mostly done and came out in nice purpre for a touch of imperial grandour.
All the rest is just basecoated and washed either Devlan or Badab Black.

Still lots more to do, especially since I also have a footslogging version of the same character to do.

I assume you mean the green. I don't know the exact recipe, as I just prepared the gradient on the palette. I might have used 2-3 layers of shadows and 4-5 highlights. I apply them on thin layers in a glaze fashion and smooth them out with feathering and even thinner glazes.
The colors used were these

VGC goblin green as the basecoat.
GW warboss green, incubi darkness, and a bit of VGC scab red for shadows.
VMC lime green, VGC moon yellow and white for highlights.

You are doing fine, It looks a lot better than my first models. If you are willing to share the manual disorder, there might be some work arounds for it.

As for the painting, throw in some edge highlights on the metal in a lighter color for it to look better and either drill your barrels or put a black dot on them. Also, have you painted his eyes?

Why is Biel Tan so popular?
>>
>>48115918
>>48115943
>>48115971
By and large, its actually decent quality.
There are some parts where it doesnt seem like it's been washed, and there is a few spots with the red paint that looks like they got alittle too thick.
Looking into doing highlights to make the colours 'pop' should help you alot.

No pic because I don't have the models to hand, but I feel like I've highlighted my Chaos Cultists too thickly, so it doesn't look natural. Is it worth doing another wash with Agrax and trying to highlight up again?
>>
>>48115982
>>48116022
Thanks a lot. Yes, I definitely have to practise washing and highlighting, I haven't really got hang of it yet. The barrel holes idea is great, I will surely do that. The eyes are painted dark green, I'm planning to add some highlight to them when I get more paints(which I'm planning to do soon).
As for the disorder It's not very serious, I'm not even sure if there is a specific name for it, I was simply diagnosed with "manual skills disorder". In practise it means that my handwriting is shit even though I was doing exercises for it for like 3 years, my drawing skills stopped at the level of preschool and I have serious trouble with everything requiring precision. Miniatures are pretty much the only art-related thing that I manage to somehow do semi-decent.

>>48116024
Sure thing, I'm currently making some corrections for my first squad and then I'm planning to do bases for both of them.
>>
>>48114864
I like this model but gods, that flat cape.. I can't stand it.
>>
>>48115657
feathering is just glazing, isn't it
>>
>>48116808

I think feathering is blending by layer paints thinned down to glazes. You don't glaze the whole surface, just the gradient.

Good first effort. On your next model you should try to thin your paints a little more. The wash on your yellow is a little haphazard, you could spend some more time getting the wash everywhere it needs to be and theb clean up some of the areas where its running down with your yellow.

Wet blending is where you put down two or more of the layers at the same time, and blend them together on the model while they're both still wet. When feathering you'd let the first layer dry before adding the second.

Find stuff to listen to or watch while you work. I've been ploughing my way through the Grimdark Podcast archives, if you need a suggestion, but anything that it's completely fascinating works.

If you can paint in a communal area with family/housemates/partner/etc then all the better, provided it's not too distracting to be out there (and you enjoy their company). If you've got friends who are painting themselves then invite them over, chat while you paint and then have a game in the evening.

Knowing what you're working towards helps. Don't worry about perfection from the get go, focus on getting stuff finished. If you really need to you can touch stuff up later. Seeing a fully painted and based squad will hopefully give you the satisfaction to fuel painting the next one. Getting the occasional game in also helps, even if it's just an unstructured knockabout with a few units a side.

Break up painting the rank and file with smaller, more interesting squads/characters/big models/etc. If you've got multiple factions to paint then alternating between them can help avoid monotony from setting in. Figure out which minis/tasks are easy and save them for when you're feeling a bit drained. Get them finished, gaze upon your works and hopefully feel invigorated again.

I don't, which is why even after fifteen years in the hobby I don't have a single finished army.
I've come to terms with that, I don't think I'll ever finish an army big enough for regular size games.
Instead I have three small incomplete forces, the basic "two troops and an HQ" core of an army for two and one that's a bit bigger. For each of them there are also a bunch of models that make no sense army composition wise but were added because I thought they looked cool.

My biggest problem is that I love building and converting and consider painting a chore.
I've built a WE CSM warband based on the BA 'dex, lovingly converted two full Tac/Assault squads, a unit of count-as-DC Berzerkers, Khornified some Sanguinary Guard to have Bloodletter faces & swords and batwings instead of those angelic ones.
I built skull-gathering Blood Priests for Apothecaries, turned Astorath into a Daemon Axe wielding dark reflection of himself and converted three Dreads mostly because I think they look great.
And I've painted exactly three models of that army, only one of which is actually finished.

Truth be told I stopped trying to collect an army years ago.
Nowadays I only model and paint stuff for my D&D campaign. That way I get to try my hand at all kinds of models, from Orcs to skellingtons to dragons to one off character models for PCs. Now that it's ten to fifteen similar models max I'm starting to rediscover how to enjoy painting again.

Mang, ALL resin is bad for you

whenever I work with any resin I

>Do all my clipping, scraping, cutting, sawing, anything that creates any dust, underwater with long kitchen gloves and a mask on with loads of ventilation, outside and away from my house

then I wash all the parts and let them dry before assembly. During assembly I wear a mask and gloves and have good ventilation. After im done I take off my clothes and wash them immediately then jump in the shower and scrub well

Don't buy their shitty premade characters and you don't have to deal with that issue.

but yeah I understand what you mean completely, the old archon was pretty damn awesome and it's a damn shame that they decided to stop selling his model when he could easily have been sold alongside the new guy. Especially considering he's the guy on the front of the codex.

I wear Gloves, Respirator, Face Shield and a protective cape whilst working the resin.

Don't forget to incinerate your clothes afterwards. Also burn down the house if you really want to be safe.

Have you considered playing skirmish games? Kill Team is a thing and Heralds of Ruin seems to be a pretty popular mod of it. With marine type armies you can build a full force that's only a dozen models or so.

Where do you put your finished minis?

I've got a few nice ones, that I don't just want to chuck in a box and would like to display, but putting them on a table/shelf they get covered in dust if I leave them out for any longer than a day.

Anyone have some nice small display boxes they would recommend?

Have you considered dusting/hoovering?

That all said, pic related seems to be the prime choice for a cheap display cabinet. It's furniture rather than a box, but it's got a relatively small footprint and has lots of space for what is surely an all-consuming hobby.

Hoovering doesnt seem to help. I'm always surrounded by clouds of dust.

Yeah I would get something like this, but i only have 5 dudes to display. Its gonna take at least a year before I have any decent number of dudes.

I was thinking something much smaller

>bad for you

It's okay to act like a paranoid coward in your own home, anon. But, relax. I treated my resin models exactly like my lead or plastic ones - except I used epoxy cement for their assembly. That's it. No 10ft poles or hazmat suits.

The dangers of resin dust are no more threatening than any other inert particulate matter: Just don't blast rails off your bench like cocaine, and no worries.

Protip: It's plastic resin, not polonium.

Try googling for miniature display case? There's a load of stuff out there, though a lot of it seems to be expensive.

Actually, scrap the miniature bit and the prices come down substantially. You can get a plain 20cm cubed box off Amazon for about £20.

I hate those manga eyes. So many colours on that little (even for miniatures standard) space.

>paying someone to paint your army
I could never do that man, it'd feel wrong, like they weren't really my dudes.
Besides I'm a) too much of a perfectionist so "if I'd done it myself they could have looked better" would haunt me every time I played and b) commissioning a well painted army ain't cheap and this isn't my only expensive hobby.

I have in fact. My FLGS has run a few the last couple of years. I played in a Kill Team campaign and joined a Path of Glory run (the old WH "so you want to be a Chaos Champion" campaign), although Bronchus the Infamous turned into Bronchus the Infirm halfway through and became a hermit after being crippled in both legs and losing an arm and his eyes.

I have played a few 500-750 pts and doubles/co-op games with my IG but somehow their tabletop performance never lived up to the grizzled veterans my models look like...
