Actually, the Vikings used highly advanced(for the time) tactics and were genuinely a huge threat, they just didn't have the manpower or land-based supply chains to sustain a siege.
They failed to sack Paris because it was almost impossible to take a city without a protracted siege, which they weren't prepared for.
