Hey guys! Does anyone want to see a reimagining of The Fighter without using Maneuvers? I have been creating a Revised Fighter that gives the fighter more Defenses and Out of Combat abilities to play with.
The concept revolves around the idea of the Fighter as a soldier and mercenary a man used to long marches, harsh conditions, and constant fighting. A man who is good at keeping himself alive and tipping the balance of battle in their favor.
For this several things have changed. For one the fighter now received Advanced Weapon & Armor training IN ADDITION to their normal Weapon & Armor training. This allows the fighter to be far more modular, giving them unique class features. To facilitate this I have added new Advanced Weapon & Armor trainings to fill out their lists, and have switched around a few of the existing in order to clarify what they do (Advanced Weapon is for Offense, Advanced Armor is for Defense).
The other thing that has been added is Advanced Equipment Training, which gives the fighter tricks to perform outside of combat. Everything from faster travel, to setting up camps, to scrounging. With Advanced Equipment training he can become a war hero and craft magic arms & armor. The Advanced Equipment training list will grow in time.
Besides this the Fighter Class Skill list has been rethought, adding new things and increasing them to 4+int modifier per level. As well Bravery has been redone.

Thanks friend! So you know the redoing has made the Fighter a very defense heavy class if you invest in it (with armor training they can get +17 to fort/reflex from just their class alone). This may be a bit too strong at the moment and may be changed.

Hey everyone! Before I head out I am wondering if anyone has final thoughts on the "Unchained" Fighter? Or if anyone may eventually plan on testplaying it? (If so I would love feedback, I plan on doing it myself eventually).
Also on a final note I am torn between who to do next for a class update. I am thinking either Cavalier or Gunslinger. Does anyone have opinions?
Cavalier would receive a large more complicated "Knightly Order" class feature with internal choices (lists to choose from of benefits, each cavalier order having access to certain benefits from an agnostic main list, plus the cavalier being able to choose a select few benefits that don't appear on their order's assigned list). These benefits would actually move away from the challenge class feature and try and make cavaliers able to switch up combat. The feel of the class would be the sort of individual who belongs to a military order/landed knight house. Where as the Fighter was supposed to emulate the "grizzled veteran".
On the other side the Gunslinger is more difficult to pin down what it needs. The conclusion I have come to is it need a larger list of deeds and the ability to choose deeds. Deeds need to able to do both in combat and out of combat things (perhaps separating them into two class features). They need to be distinctly separated from Ranger's as a mainly at range class with their own unique abilities and niche. Towards this my idea lies in making them the urbanite, able to deal with people. However this also steps on the Vigilante's toes. Any thoughts on the Gunslinger? Or angry outbursts, I'm also fine with angry outbursts!

My group is wrapping up the last book of Kingmaker now, and with fewer sessions left than you can count on one hand, I can't really say I remember much out of the campaign that needed serious revision- although it's possible that anything so awful as to need such revision was revised by my DM without saying anything. He's told us that he hasn't changed much of the AP, other than rebalancing encounters for our large party. As for the very start of the campaign... I actually can't say much at all, I joined the campaign just a few sessions after they finished the first book. I think it's more that the things that are IMPORTANT in fantasy, the things that are valued both critically and by consumers, can obviate actual writing ability to a lesser or greater degree. Brandon Sanderson is, what, the best-by-a-bunch-of-metrics fantasy author in the world? Prolific, best-selling, much-beloved, et cetera et cetera, but his characterization is weak and he's especially shitty at writing girls, which is grating when his best-known work centerpieces one. His plots are okay. Not bad, not special either - Mistborn was supposed to be this dark story about if Sauron won, but he ended up scrapping that (I hate grimdark so no tears here) for an only somewhat nontraditional narrative. His worldbuilding is good, but it's not as good as some people say it is. But he is a fucking GOD at understanding what makes magic systems cool and interesting and creative. He spins that shit out in his sleep and every fucking TIME he comes up with something completely new and exciting, every new series, totally new systems. They're fun as FUCK to read and think about.
But his characterization is weak, and his plots are average, and his worldbuilding doesn't cover them.
But he's the best.
It's like that. Rothfuss could make an English major cum in half a paragraph but he's a sad, aging virgin or near-virgin who thinks the friendzone is actually noble. King is maybe the Shakespeare of our time except he literally cannot stick an ending to save his fucking life, a hundred books and a hundred shit endings. Martin is great at balancing gut-stabs out with these sweeping epic realpolitik campaigns, but he can only REALLY write Tyrion and NPCs (Syrio, Bronn, Aemon, anyone who he isn't TRYING to write) and he only figured out Tyrion after a book and a half.
All these guys would probably be shit if they wrote anything but fantasy. But it's okay. Fantasy has different metrics.
