It's time for confessional /tg/.

When I DM, I steal all my NPCs from Precure anime and reskin them as rugged old men.
>>
>>47944684
When I GM, I usually have the players encounter a cutesy trap that will help them along the way with downtime stuff like healing, preparing potions, scrolls et cetera. The look on their faces when the NPC they thought was a girl joins them in the men section of the bathroom/hot baths is always a treat.

Doubly so when they still go for it even after they know the truth and insist on 'no homo though'

I've got a confession;

I railroad fucking everything. I can't help it. I spend every week talking on podcasts and shows about being a great DM that makes player-driven moments and events take precedence in the campaign, but I have NEVER had a player do anything like that. They don't attack anyone out of turn, they don't chase reckless ideas, they just pick up a quest, go do it, and then come back to get paid. They never ask for more.

So instead, I just keep them chugging along the plot train because otherwise nothing would happen.
>>
>>47944844
>I almost never plan games more than a day or two before the session.

Since I run exclusively published adventures, I always spend some time during the week reading/prepping what I think will happen just so I'm familiar with it. But 90% of that time is setting up statblocks, maps, and tokens I'll need.

I run 3 campaigns a week right now, and play in a 4th and host a show, so I have very little actual time to prep anything anymore.
>>
One NPC in my setting is a youngster of mixed race who shows great promise of being a master archer. Prefers to wear only flexible rogue pants and sandals. Nothing else.

It's actually a girl, she goes to great lengths to hide this fact
>>
>>47944811
I do similar, only they're a tomboyish reverse trap.

>>
>>47944894
that just means that A, there isn't really another option or B, your quests are really good
>>
>>47944969
They're not, at least I don't think. I have a habit of the "no consequence quest", which means that the players go in and kill someone, and will usually make an enemy, strike a bargain, or burn something down in the process, but it never actually comes back to them.

That's mostly just the way my brain works, I guess, I have to force myself to remember those things for later.

I hate people who do blatantly magical realm shit in game and trust me, none of you cunts are any good at hiding it.

The moment someone isn't a team player in my games I start heaping penalties or a lions share of the damage until they beg for support from others.

If there's a powergamer in my group I thrust them into situations that make their character vulnerable and weak while giving benefits or nice things to other, non optimized characters.

When I run Deadlands I just use the plots of westerns I know my players haven't seen. They've only ever seen The Man With No Name trilogy so my material is practically endless. I steal characters from them all the time too so it's not just the plot either. I enjoy imagining them fighting side by side with classic western heroes or going up against great villains. They actually shot a vengeful zombie Liberty Valance to protect senator Ransom Stoddard.
>>
>>47944684
I was part of a campaign where I became the DM after the DM got burnt out. As I had to come up with a reason to get rid of him, I baited one of the players into setting of a chain of events that turned my player character from a Neutral Good hero to a Lawful Evil villain over the course of a year. He had become the Lawful Neutral antagonist of another campaign before being defeated by them and going full Lawful Evil because he had basically lost everything.
Only one person in the party he came from knows that their character abandoned him in the Feywild and kickstarted everything. He's now a Chain Devil and he'll be back for that character eventually.

My players think tomboys forced into girly dresses are really cute said players consist of three women and a crossdressing guy, so I sometimes include a tomboy just so they can go out of they can have a little amusement during downtime. No, I don't mean sex. Sex has never actually come up during the campaigns.

Though they also joked about wanting to force a villain to dress like a french maid once they beat him.

I have a player that plays a chaotic neutral wizard really well. Pretty sure he is on a path to become the next god of madness. He might be on the edge of chaotic evil, but hasn't pushed over the line yet. He's taken out a village of innocents previously because they kicked him out of a brothel, but he has more recently saved a monastary from demonic influence. our group paladin is getting ready to *attempt* to smite him either way.

I never plan anything before one hour before the session and just wing it. I used to try to plan things, then my players destroyed almost everything I ever planned, I improvise now.

I need to constantly lean on one of my players for emotional support because I have wanted to quit the campaign a couple times recently, convinced myself my players didn't give a shit about anything I was trying to do and got tired of them running off on their own impossible to manage side ventures.

One player's annoying actions are coloring my perceptions to where I get unreasonably angry whenever he does anything, even if he doesn't deserve it, and I'm trying to be more fair to him.

I complain about not being in a game as a player but I dropped out of last three games due to lack of interest.

All the games I've run died out do to players losing interest or never getting started.

It's like I'm a bad GM and Player.
>>
>>47948120
I don't know what it is but I swear it's so common for players to fall for their GMs

The first time I ever played a ttrpg, I developed a crush on my DM within a couple weeks. He had a girlfriend already, so that didn't go anywhere. But now that I'm running my own campaigns, one of my players has a really obvious crush on me, and I'm not sure what to do about it either.

Is it just something about the power dynamic? I'm honestly perplexed by this trend.
>>
>>47949851
Holy shit dude, me too. My roleplaying moments as a GM are entertaining and "captivating" according to my players, but when I attempt to run combat, everything just slows to an immeasurably dull crawl and people end up pulling out their phones when it isn't their turn. How the hell do I make combat more engaging?

Show up by /tg/chat on F-List and you'll be sorted out.

Though if I may burst this bubble, Magical Realm campaigns are more of an ideal than something really achievable. Long-term freeform RP is doable, but bringing actual RPG systems into it gets wonky. You can still get lewd with other characters of a regular game in 'downtime', but making the Magical Realmness part of the campaign itself makes it lose its Magic imo.

Being a good GM takes intelligence, charisma and perceptiveness. And he/she is in a position of authority over you, which makes you either want to rebel or submit. No one gets turned on by an egalitarian, noncompetitive relationship.

My girlfriend freely admits that one of the reasons why she liked me was that I was so arrogant and such a smartass that she wanted to take me down a peg.

Make people act faster. If they stop to ponder their action, snap your fingers and tell them they don't have time to think in battle.

Additionally, make combat more intense. Use the D&D 5e method:
>HP can't drop below 0
>when you hit 0, you are unconscious
>every turn and attack while unconscious you must make a death saving throw
>three failed saving throws = dead
>restoring HP will wake the character and reset their death check count
This lets you put characters in mortal peril more frequently without the threat of instagibbing.
>>
>>47950136
I've noticed this as well. I have ended up banging every single girl I've run for.

My theory is that it has something to do with the demonstration of authority being subconsciously analogous to the idea they have amassed actual power, which in turn is a pretty strong attractor.

Like, I'm not trying to dehumanise people, I often find myself romanticizing the women in my life that I see as being 'influential'.
>>
>>47950754
Or use the FFG method where once HP/wounds hits zero you start taking damage on the infamous critical tables.

>risk of mortal peril
>no risk of lingering bodily injury
>>
>>47949232
>she has been a practicing nudist for 12 years so i have seen plenty of them tiny titties
Sorry for off-topic but I have to mention it, is it considered abnormal for relatives to see each other naked where you're from? My older sister actually BATHED me when I was a toddler. Modesty only started coming into question when she turned 15 or so and that was more out of general self-consciousness. My mother never saw a problem with it either. The only person in my direct family who I didn't regularly see naked for a few years was my dad
>>
>>47951158
Every family is different, and nudity isn't a big deal when you're kids.
>>
Whenever I am a player, I go out of my way to make unorthodox, stupid, or otherwise off-the-rails decisions just to see how the DM will react. I also backseat GM whenever whoever is running the game doesn't seem like he knows what to do next. All the while, I think how I would have run the game differently.

I am forever GM for a reason.

I've been playing a game of pathfinder with some friends and they were fighting a hobgoblin chief. He ran the dwarf cleric through with his sword and dropped him to dying, while mocking him in cockney accent.

The party was almost out of heals and realized this guy is no push over and started thinking strategically. The druid sent in his bear while they distracted the hobgoblin and the bear dragged him to safety where he could be healed by another party member.

They really enjoyed the challenge of the encounter, and stopping to speak to them as the hobgoblin really put them into the mood, and made them want victory even more.

In one of the campaigns I'm in, I hate the way the DM handles things, very No Fun Allowed. So whenever I play that campaign I usually lie about my rolls upping them some notches up.

Don't even feel guilty though, especially when your DM won't let you even get a conversation of an NPC or strays the plot to fuck you over no matter your plans (or lack thereof).

Which is kinda sad, being myself one of the only ones having fun with the game no matter how fucked up things get. Everyone else plans waaay too much what they'll do, thanks in part to the GM.

I'm usually THAT GUY for the table because I've ended up being the 'rough and tough' asshole in the group of friends so I keep them in line.

I want an ERP so badly but my friends all have such strange fucking fetishes and none are willing to try it.

I killed an entire fucking game because the GM was being an asshole and rule lawyering, So I framed him and we all almost ended our friendship... nobody knows to this day it was my doing.

Nobody ever wants hugs ;-;

I think that's super weird because I was raised in a completely different type of family. I have never seen a member of my family even close to naked or vice versa. Even when my sister was an infant I don't think I ever saw her naked.

But you're not abnormal. In fact I might be the weird one.

> Tell a game of political intrigue and warfare
> Group rises to power rather fast by use of exessive force and a ridiculously large merc-army which will eat up all their funds within two months tops.
> I provide a vast landscape, custom and detailled maps and dozens of factions and noblehouses fighting for power.
> I try to not make anyone except the Big Bad Antagonist seem really evil - mostly it's shades of grey, ambition, powerlust, ruthlessness.

> Of this I did too good of a job.

"Anon, we just don't have any clear enemy except for Big Bad, how could we make alliances with anyone? They're all one shade of shit or another, but none really evil."

> "Well, you could always align yourself with the Empress and her Marshall of the Region. They are definitely goodguys."

"True, but they also don't have the strength to project military force into the Region we are trapped in. By aligning ourselves with them, we would be in a bad spot." (Many of their Neighbours are in Feud with the Empire).

> "Then maybe try to forge an alliance with the Knightly and Godfearing Lord who holds large lands to your east, he can project his power easily and be a boon to you in all the wars to come."

"True, but then we'd be enemies of the empire, because he is in bloodfeud over the succession of his daughter with the empire."

It goes on like this.
> One Year (Outtime) later
> Four Months (Intime) later
> War has escalated
> Heroes have run out of funds
> Heroes have failed to secure a larger foothold to keep up with their spending habits and merc-demands
> Heroes have refused to make an alliance with ANYONE
> Now they're in deep shit.

It's my fault, really.

I should have made some of the Noble Houses more clearly evil, and I should have made some of them much more clearly good guys.

You're doing a good job in critrole.
Nevermind that the Adventurers and Players basically just mindlessly follow the obviously laid out plotthreads you crafted.

naw man, whomever they turn up to, they discover, they can't bring themselves to hate. Even some of the more overt bad guys I portray, I try to portray as human beings.

The only guy whom my heroes gladly destroyed was a sad out of luck broke baron who wanted to extort them for money, since he stood no chance of defending his people against the Big Bad.

The Heroes promptly killed him and half his knights in one of the most gruesome fashions one can imagine. It was a bloodbath.

I've become what I hated most. A flake GM. After a certain amount of sessions I lose interest in the campaign. At first I thought it was the people that I had as players but now I think that it's some flaw in myself. I've yet to successfully conclude a campaign, but I'm hoping to change it this time, but maybe I'm just not cut out for it.
>>
>>47954071
I've almost flaked on my game a couple times, had myself convinced none of my players cared about the campaign or anything I was trying to do.

Turned out it was really just one guy who was being a lot more interested in his own personal story elements than the overall plot and being very loud about it, the others were actually very invested and it gave me the energy to turn things around and move forward.

I know it sounds petty, but I had really high hopes for the campaign for story and adventure and when it feels like nobody gives a shit and takes you for granted week after week, it was sucking the fun out of being a DM and making it feel more like a tedious chore than something I wanted to do.

Now I'm doing interesting stuff and having fun again.

>TFW your last combat encounter starts with the players shitting bricks about how dead they are, and finish with sighs of relief and exclamations of triumph after they really had to think to overcome their enemies and say how satisfying a battle it was.

So good.
>>
almost all of my campaigns and settings are somewhat inspired by dragon age:origins

my first campaign had a DMPC
>>
>>47954116
I have like 4 DMPCs in my campaign, they're well received because most of them are noncombatants who just stay at the mobile base and offer fun roleplaying interactions, the only one who did fight was only in a couple fights before plot developments sidelined him.
>>
>>47952332

That sounds rad as hell, can you give some examples?

People who want to be taken from earth by aliens? A magician who helps people with relationship advice? Godzilla?
>>
I DM a fantasy setting with heavy steampunk elements in it.

The current antagonists in my campaign are thinly veiled expies of Star Wars characters.

I'm waiting to see how long it takes or how blatant it gets before anyone notices.

Nobody has so far.

I've self inserted Stannis Baratheon in my 3.5 campaign, and the players, somewhat GOT fans have followed him in basically every endeavour he's set himself to

The villages and covens they burned so far, filled with undead and general unholy things were actually normal people, but the Priestess placed a spell on the party and followers to see them as vile, necromantic minnions.

My girlfriend doesn't play Magic: the Gathering. Therefore the barkeep is named Angus Mckenzie when I have to think of something on the fly.

>>
>>47944684
Forgive me, /tg/, for I have sinned.

I've GM'd entire game sessions without really rolling the dice, having pre-determined outcomes for the current situation already planned out in my head. Any dice rolling I've done in these situations is purely for show.

>>47957869
Next Saturday, actually. It'll be one of those "final battle" type of situations, where if they succeed, they find out in a "WHAT HAVE WE DONE" type of deal.

But if they fail, I've got a few scenarios in mind, like the clammering undead chitterings surrounding them and screaming until the illusion goes away and they all are surrounded by peasant militia, etc, shouting "WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE HEROES, SAVIOURS"

I run, and genuinely enjoy running, ERP campaigns. You need the right kind of players, which is to say people with basic social skills and a significant amount of real-world sexual experience who still enjoy ERP, but they're out there.

The second guy has it. A fedora is meant to be paired with a suit or a coat.
>>
I am bad both at preparing stuff in advance *and* at winging it, so I steal blatantly left and right, and any major NPC tends to start life as a Mary Sue DMPC and then get told not to steal the spotlight. In one of my particularly excessive games I had a Mary Sue shapeshifter DMPC join the party and seduce one of the PCs, combining That Guy with That DM, while a Rogue Trader spaceship was making a crossover into the setting and crashlanding on the PCs' fortress-base.

And this is why I run Exalted, where you're doing it wrong if you aren't at least a double mary sue and nobody bats an eye at so much stupid bullshit.

There are some solo adventures that you can play by yourself. I know GURPS did four of them based on Conan books, with semi-random progression through the quest and a lot of different possible outcomes.

I stole the whole goddamn plot for the entire campaign from Wakfu S1. None of them knew, until another friend saw some sketches and I had to explain to him. I've confessed to them before, but they seemed to like it. They even bought me cake.

I plan to steal plots from Hogfather, Gravity Falls, and Twin Peaks soon-ish.

While I plan the framework for games, I improvise almost all details.

I cheat for my player's benefit when killing them would be boring.

I only run one-shots because my friends have fucked up schedules
I have never run a full campaign

I do all of my planning during character creation
Half my ideas are re-skinned Cowboy Bebop plots
I secretly fantasise r34 situations of PCs and NPCs
When playing D&D/PF with new players I purposefully withhold system information. I remember the game was so much more fun when me and my group didn't know all the rules and couldn't powergame. I change rules during play to make for a more smooth and balanced game. It feels sleezy and I'm probably doing my players a disservice but it results in much better game.

Outside of play I spend more time tweeking and trying to create systems than I do planning games. At this point it's starting to become an addiction. Whenever I play the little imperfections in the system bother to no end. I hide how much it bothers and just let it slide or houserule it but it haunts me. I don't get to play often and when I do these systems just bug me, I want to maintain the integrity of the game but it's just so fucking annoying.
Whenever I do start tweeking I loose focus and start changing to much. I forget what the system is intended for and drive myself up the wall. Maybe if I had a group to steadily play with I could do some testing and shit but that never happens. I just have to live with this neurotic little obsession
