Bullshit, the 2011 version still had those. Nowhere near as strong as the '82, but it's still there. For example, I would argue that the divide of people who could speak the language of the crazy swedes and those who couldn't added to the sense of division and mistrust. That was done very well in my opinion.

Even John Carpenter says he would've used CGI if it was available for him. The practical effects of the The Thing were good, but remember it put Rob Bottin in a hospital. And also practical effects have limitations to them, which is why the Blair-Thing was such a dud in the climax of the '82 The Thing. The Thing 2011 didn't have a geniuses like Bottin or Carpenter working on it, despite having a comparable budget (adjusted for inflation). But that doesn't mean Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is a bad director. With what they were given to work with, the 2011 The Thing was fine in my opinion aside from a few things.
And practical effects aren't an inherent indicator of quality, look at Harbinger Down. And it's also worth noting that John Carpenter's The Thing was not well received at all either when it came out, and not just financially. Sci-fi fans were shitting all over Carpenter for desecrating what they viewed as a classic 1950s sci-fi horror movie.

If this is going to be a John Carpenter discussion then what really killed his career was Big Trouble in Little China, he had hits after The Thing and was still a respected name in the industry until Big Trouble. (And has now regained his reputation especially due to the reevaluation of The Thing as the masterpiece it is)
I never said practical effects are inherently better, but Bottin's work on The Thing was godlike and the new monster cgi looked like first gen ps3 shit. I understand that the new one was made on practically the same budget but that just goes to show how instrumental Carpenter was to making the whole thing work. The movie never should have been made, it should have been an original movie inspired by John's, not a pre-sequel. Would it have been any better? The 80s were also a sequel craze. Look how many Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13 movies there were. To say that the only horror movies that came out were "sequels/prequels" is just ignorant.

Except it was. It was a financial failure when it came out (it only actually recouped its budget in 2011), it was a critical failure when it came out, and according to Carpenter himself, sci-fi fans hated it when it first came out. The movie didn't find success until after it's theatrical run.
