Every intelligent species gets a fair chance. To overcome the perils of their home planet, solve their internal struggles, and then go to the stars with the resources left to them on their home world.
Matter is funny that way. Main sequence stars wink out and leave behind certain concentrations of atoms, big atoms. Atoms so big that the death of a star is the only force capable of producing them in quantities.
Many of these heavy atoms are essential for science and technology to develop, sturdy matter and essential reactants for harnessing the power of the universe. Unstable isotopes to discover the inner workings of matter by breaking it into pieces. All these are vital for any intelligent species to break orbit in numbers and survive in their new home.
But eons ago when mankind was young and could hardly paint or even speak they came. They didn't much care about the two legged mammals roaming the surface. They cared only for that one element, the precious heavy stable one that accretes at the liquid cores of so shaped planets. The one that is the key to understanding the fabric of reality. The one without which no culture can ever hope to step onto distant worlds. The one without which a species is doomed to travel through the void in fragile and slow extensions of their habitat with no hope of returning in their lifetime.
They took it and they left. Our ancestors understood their presence no more than they understood earthquakes and solar eclipses.
Millennia later mankind ventures out in our spacetime prison to discover all the systems in reach of our sublight generation ships. Like an infection we spread from world to world, taking centuries each time to create the ability to start anew and send another generation of explorers into the void. Until eventually the stable heavy element is discovered in a system at the very beginning of colonization.
That's when they arrive to take it again. We know now what the element is, and what it can probably do eventually, if we research it. And we remember them, if just on a cultural subconscious level, the best clues buried in the cryptic messages of ancient relics.
So gather all pilots, soldiers, geologists, engineers, archaeologists, and paleontologists of mankind. Your species needs you. This race will only last a few decades, and it will decide the fate of man.
