My favorite approach to elves in general is probably just super patient people with a slight advantage in dexterity and/or magic. In lots of settings, elves live for hundreds of years, so it makes sense that they'd almost always take the long view from the humans' perspective, even if they just think they're at a normal level of patience.My current Wood Elf PC basically believes she's got all the time in the world so she's let herself get lazy and her swordplay rusty. There was a book series that came out not too long ago that featured elves as this conquering empire, that subjugated all other races via magic brainwashing that needed to be re-applied to keep their slaves complacent. Because the slaves never remembered anything, many would use that as an excuse to heap abuses on their slaves(humans, dwarves, etc) and then subject them to the enchantment so they have no idea where their injuries came from.

Elves would represent our love for art, music and nature while dwarves represent our love of wealth and craftsmanship. That's why they seem one dimensional.

In my shitty homebrew, elves are only moderately longer lived than humans (150 years or so of functional life, then a different kind of "natural cause" death). They are decedents of fey which immigrated into the world after their own was destroyed, and while the true fey were actually ageless, their children were mortal, and subsequent generations became more and more like the other humanoid races of this world, both in terms of physiology and lifespan. Most current elves live among humans and aren't really seen as being fundamentally different, even though their origins are technically extraterrestrial. A few groups still live secluded and isolated away from the great cities of men, where they are led by the surviving first generation fey who were not picked off by disease or war or all the other ravages of time. And those elves are kinda buttmad about not being immortal like their ancestors. In terms of gameplay, elves have a bit extra magical attunement

This makes them very hard to understand and connect for your average /tg/ guy who is either ignorant of his own arrogance and detachment or who values comfortable company where people don't have high standards in etiquette.

I hate elves because those two guys I started playing tabletop with always picked elves and they were always played a mary sue type character without regard to the rest of the group. While I'm playing a human who's just trying to raise enough money adventuring to send to his wife and kids back home, they're playing a duo of demon summoning, sanguine magic using, teleport behind you and unsheathes katana elves. If I try to move up and match their power level, they'll usually move on to something else over the top, and if someone actually matches or eclipses them, they'll stop playing with any feeling to move on to the next game.
All this hate just fell on elves and any elf type characters throughout media, such as Protoss from Starcraft, Asari from Mass Effect, or any other race who's whole shtick is being an impossibly ancient brooding creature who can't stand when others outdo them. I hate elf players and by extension I hate elves.
