I'm trying to spice up my knight's base as flat with stones seem too little for the big guy.

Currently working on an idea with a ruined road out of cork covering roughing one third and a lamp post I have left from an imperial sector, the rest being earth so it isn't too dense.

I want to bulk up the dirt part however and I've been wondering, would simple wood filler be a good way to make iregular earth that might get the knight up by half an inch or less?

On a side note, would Agrellan Earth crackle paint work on anything other then flat pastic?
>>
So, its a correct assumption that Hobby Lobby or an equivalent would have proper sand that I can just glue onto my bases, right? Got some models that I want to bury their feet to add to the desert theme.
>>
>>47786673
I purchased a 15kg for like £4. Once dried out by sitting in my room for a few weeks it was perfect.

Don't be fooled into thinking you need to spend much on sand for bases. I use the sand constantly and give pots of it out to my fellow wargamers and it's not even close to half empty. I feel like a sucker for buying GW sand for so long.

Find a building site near you and ask the bricklayer if you can take a small bucket of their sand.

It's really good for basic ground texture, you can add slightly larger grit to taste.
I do 90% of my stuff with brickies sand as a starting point now.

I assume google is trying to tech an algorithm to regognise them. Same as the streetsigns.

If you mean how to make the line look like it's continuous on folded cloth. What I do is rule a line on some paper then fold it into roughly the shape of the robe etc. to see how it flows. Then replicate that line.

Otherwise if it's just a how do I paint straight question. You can use a fine greylead pencil to lightly mark points (with calipers if you're super anal) then join those points with a line. After that trace the line with your paint.

Dettol if you are in Aus, UK and possibly canada. Safe for almost everything for over a week of soaking. Wrecks green stuff though.

Simple green for most everywhere. Still wrecks green stuff I believe.

or acetone free nailpolish remover, that can melt though. You just add a bit to a brush and scrub.

I used Equate-brand (Walmart) non-acetone nail polish remover. It's cheap and effective. Use an old toothbrush to scrub it on and get the paint off. You shouldn't need to let it soak... and Emperor protect you if you accidentally buy the acetone stuff instead; it *will* melt your plastic.

If yer in da UK, I hear Dettol works well, too.

Damn, CAPTCHA... again with the store fronts?

Get a jug from wal mart. Wash out an old milk gallon to keep the used stuff in so you can re-use it.

Pick up a cheep set of plastic food containers with lids and an old tooth brush while you are at wal mart.

I have left minis sitting in this stuff so long it all evoprated and it did not harm the minis at all.

If up put the lid on the containers after you cover the minis with this stuff it will last a long time.
>>
>>47787346
You can also buy a 50lbs of the stuff from your local hardware store for $5 and have enough for like 4 tables, 5 armies, and all the terrain you could want, and still have 25lbs of it left over.
Or, you could beg construction workers for a bit of outdoor cat piss laced sand lol.

>I went to buy some citadel paint pots and found some of them were labeled as "base" paint. Is there an actual difference in formulation between base and non-base paint or is it just saying the colors are suitable to use as a base coat?

The difference can range from "minimal" to "zoggin' ooge!"

Base paints have a specific ratio of medium to pigments to work well as the first layer you put on on a model; see >>47789107 - the Base paints are in the middle.

Layer paints are meant to go on top of base paints, although in practice, I've found that the Layer paints I've purchased can be used much like Base paints if you apply the right undercoat. If you notice a difference at all between Base and Layer paints, it will usually be pretty minimal.

The other paints differ greatly. You'll find Dry, Texture, Shade, Glaze, Gloss, and Technical bottles that are all pretty far removed from what Bases do. They each have their own specific uses, and, as the chart in >>47789107 shows, are often made specifically to compliment one or more other colours in the Citadel range.

>How would I go about making a base coat with generic acryllic? Just add a few more layers than normal?

This question makes me suspicious, anon.

If yer askin' "how can I mix the paints on the right to get an effect similar to the paints on the left so I can slap them on a tiny metal lad like the one in the middle", the answer is, you can't and you shouldn't. Every once in a while I have a use for cheap-ass craft store paint, but it's almost exclusively for putting on terrain pieces and stuff like that - *not* expensive Citadel miniatures. Even the pricier stuff that comes in tubes (cadmium is an expensive pigment, innit?) is meant for artwork on board, paper, or canvas, and is ill-suited to finely-detailed models.

If that *isn't* your question, could you elaborate?

>>
>>47791255
what both of us meant with gray is that you should avoid basecoating white and leaving it like a shiny slab because it will look bad, try starting from grey and highlight into white or do white and shade grey. To do the latter just dilute the colour and apply it very thinly (do not load the brush) and make a few coats until you are satisfied. http://www.mainlymedieval.com/ozpainters/viewtopic.php?t=49&start=0
(also i wanted to make it clear that i suggested red because it is complementary to green and should give a nice effect to the mini)
>>
>>47791255
>Not sure how to do that. You have a link?
Just do some 'blacklining' with a light grey on the white parts and it'll give it the feeling of coming together.
Right now these parts are just plain white, which kinda make them feel unfinished. Adding some shading to the recesses is gonna soften the look of the mini and give it more depth in general.

I use a white undercoat to paint my Blood Angels. This results in a much brighter red (I also start with Evil Sunz Scarlet instead of Mephiston Red) that is more along the lines of how they looked in the days of Second Edition than the Grim Darkness of Third Edition and later.

Minimum around 7.
Black, white and 3 core colours, base and a metalic. You'll need to mix your own highlight colours.

If you want to paint using just pot colours though you'll want 12-20.

Starter sets can be good if you want everything in them as they can be a little cheaper but if you don't just get individuals as you need them.

>>

It's a really stupid question, considering that the bare minimum for a good airbrush or compressor is far higher than $50. For each one.
>>
>>47794520
You guys wonder why WIP is shit? It's because of morons like these. If you don't like good advice just because it doesn't spoonfeed and handhold and is sugarcoated for you, get the fuck out. A sub-$50 compressor is fucking garbage.
>>
>>47794509
The airbrush is better then the compressor. That compressor will give you lots of problems the longer you use it. It's got no holding tank so the air pressure will be sporadic and spit a little and no water trap so it's likely only good for a few minutes a day if you want even coats. If your just doing yellow base coats it should do fine for a few models a day. The airbrush is got most of what you want starting.
>>
>>47794550
I think Johnny fits the whole classic 40k theme more.

He may not be too creative of a model by himself, but the way the community created this meme around him makes him feel like a communal "your dude". He's not anything special gear-wise whatsoever, but now he's gonna be one of the coolest guys in you whole army.
>>

I guess you could say that was my answer.

It's the fact he's a communal in-joke and an embodiment of culture which I guess would make him the definition of a meme, at least in the classic sense of the word. That fact doesn't make him bad however.

>This is a fucking nightmare. I have no idea how the guy who did pic related did it.

Very carefully, anon. I think I actually folded a sheet of sandpaper and dragged the folded edge between the molecular bonding studs on his shoulder pauldron. Also, >>47794381's advice about the thin files (I didn't have any back then, though) is spot on.

Y'know, there was also some variation in the casts back then due to things like mold slippage, where the halves are apart by just the tiniest fraction of an inch. Da QC trolls didn't always catch it before packaging, either. I've seen some metal beekees that look like they'd been split in half and soldered back together rather haphazardly. Sometimes you got one with bad mold lines, sometimes you didn't.

>On a related note, I never noticed how small Johnny is; he's a head shorter than a Space Marine Scout and a little thinner than 'em too.
>His left eye actually has a pupil too, which makes him even more awesome.

All the old metal beekees are small, and Johnny's bent-over posture doesn't help matters any. The plastic RTB-01's were the same way (pic related).

>>47794670
>Because the people who post Johnny actually create threads

I only do when I'm paying attention, anon. That sometimes other people use a Johnny picture for the OP warms my heart, because I feel it gives us a sense of identity. Now, how Johnny *also* ended up in the OP picture for the WH40K general thread... *that's* a deeper mystery. I tend to stay out of there, and had nothing to do with that.

>>47794714
>I bet if some anti-Johnny made a thread to prevent it some faggot would just say "what're you doing the other thread's still on page 9" or whatever.

You're probably right, but it wouldn't be me. As long as we have a thread - with or without Johnny - all I want to do is read, save a picture or two for inspiration, and contribute.

The section labeled just 'sky' here (as opposed to 'sky grey')
>>
>>47795086
>the problem is that my question was why is he a meme and you answered because he is a meme.

The other part of his answer, as to why Johnny and not the Forest Goblin spider-rider, is that he fits the 40K theme so well, and 40K is a lot of what goes on here in WIP... for better or for worse.

>also some of your wording made me wonder, was johnny relevant in its time?

Not really any more than any other Beekee, although it's always been a wonder to me why he isn't in the blue 1990 catalogue like everybody else. It's not like he was some kind of unreleased secret like the Space Marine Standard Bearer (pic related) or something.

>Did people give it any particular importance or was he just one of the space marines which people deemed more representative in these threads?

It originated solely in the WIP threads. If you've never seen the model up close, it looks like he's talking into a communicator. If you take a close look (and notice that his bolt gun has no magazine), you'll see that he is, in fact, reloading, and the fresh rounds are visible in the top of his magazine.
>>
>>47795041
>I actually folded a sheet of sandpaper and dragged the folded edge between the molecular bonding studs on his shoulder pauldron.
That's fucking genius.
I've actually got him looking relatively nice with just an old pocketknife and my fingernails so far but I'll make sure to use that to buff out some of the kinks.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out what is mold line and what's actual detail on the model however since this is the first metal model I've ever worked on.
C'est la vie though, only one way to learn I guess. I'm having so much fun.

>>47795086
I think Johnny is definitely more popular now than he was in the past, but that's just a guess. I think it's because he's so much in conflict with the current state of the game that he resonates so much with the people on /wip/.
>>
>>47795172
Ok, if you want green washes i only found green tone ink from army painter and vallejo's green, but this link might help .

If you want that colour, best bets would be swamp green from reaper,gw's murgling flesh, vallejo's pastel green(just look into them don't buy blindly, it's just hypothesis, but i think the closest is vallejo. The problem with that colour is that slight blue tone to it, you might have to mix it, either by adding a touch of cyan, or since thecolour looks very pastel, i think mixing a similarly blue green colour with white would do, problem is obviously which colour and i can't help you on that.

On another note, like many guard players I fucking hate the Taurox model. I have one, a secondhand piece that's butt-ugly (I don't even want to paint it). Wondering if it's worth it to buy a new kit and then convert it with proper weapon placement and some actual wheels instead of the retarded sno-cat pods.

I couldn't really say what paints would work best for the color scheme (I'm far from the best painter).
I'd try asking on the /wip/ thread as they'll give you a whole ton of great advice.

>>47797013
Tuarox's look a whole lot better when you replace their tracks with plain ol' wheels. Gives 'em a kinda MRAP look which is kinda neat.
Other than that I heard some 3rd party half track models look alright.

>>47797013
I never understood why people dislike it so much

I don't like them since I don't really think they fit with 40k's aesthetic. They look a little too boxy and modern to me.
The tracks are also retarded and for as armored as they appear to be, they're 11/10/10 3HP (iirc)? They're fucking paper with armor drawn on them

personally I would have made the Taurox have slightly better armor, cost the same points as a Chimera, but make all Tauroxes fast and not just the primes

Chimeras would be slow but safe
Tauroxes would be fast but less safe

Right now Tauroxes are supposed to be the IG equivalent of the Rhino, but misses the point about why Chimeras and Rhinos are useful
>>
>>47786296
i suppose saving money for my first figures is WIP in a different way
I think I'm going to go with nids
>>
>>47797287
>Tauroxes are supposed to be the IG equivalent of the Rhino, but misses the point about why Chimeras and Rhinos are useful
Exactly, they wouldn't even be half bad if they weren't so obscenely overcosted. 80 fucking points for a prime is crazy.
>>
>>47786673
personally i try to only use whats available
I like to travel to the near by national park to steal small lake rocks as they are the best
>>
>>47797330
the taurox prime is just confused

it is fast and has better firepower, but still paper thin

if it was just fast and paper thin, like if the gun was an optional upgrade, but a few points cheaper, it'd be an easier sell
>>

if you're short on money, just buy second-hand. I can't understand why anyone would ever buy retail other than to "support gw". If you try hard enough you can get a lot of nice things for cheap.
>>
>>47797476
I have $20 to my name as of this moment
>>
>>47797556
still though, you can get a lot more with that money on ebay or another mini trading site. nids might be harder to find though since they're not nearly as popular as things like guard or marines
>>
>>47797556

no offense but there might be better things to spend your money on than tyranids then
>>
>>47797476
> I can't understand why anyone would ever buy retail other than to "support gw".

- Don't want recast FW stuff and there aren't any legit auctions on eBay
- Live in some third world shithole where it's cheaper to pay 100% MSRP than ship online discounted items to their country
- Want to support local FLGS

Those are about the only three reasons I can think of that are any good. I don't even consider "supporting GW" a good reason.
>>
>>47797832
>Want to support local FLGS
Spot on right there. That's about the only reason I don't buy all my 40k shit online.

They've not even been around a year but it's become one of my favorite shops 'round town already. Real friendly staff and decent deals too. Kinda small selection of GW products but it's still enough to get what you want.

Thanks bro's will give that a go! Will try to finish the 2 terminators after work today. You recon the helmets looks ok? After that I will paint some assault infantry and then a landraider. I might beg around for some bits for my assault guys because they are a bit posable (2001 kit?).
>>
>>47796663
i feel like for a warboss he's a tad under-armoured
>>
I just finished basecoating my first Rhino.

I want to die.

I still need to buy and paint three more of the fuckers for the Kauyon White Scars formation (that includes actually finishing this one).

Is this the price I pay for being overpowered?
>>
>>47798211
>Is this the price I pay for being overpowered?
No, you pay that price no matter what.
Being overpowered just makes it hurt slightly less.
>>
>>47797692
already worked the prices out, warhammer is low on the list, but i figure throwing a couple bucks back out of each paycheck could get quite the army. just a matter of actually getting to that part

Attached a head and did some more GS cleanup for my converted inquisitor psyker.

GS is much cleaner than my previous attempts, but still a mess. Need to find out a good way to fill the seams on the side of the robe.

I am undecided on whether to GS her hair or not. In my original concept she had more hair and not the a fade haircut on one side, but so far I couldn't even get GS to stick to her head.

The base that came with the original model combined with the more upright pose makes her look like some kind of massive amazon woman, but she is overall a similar height to everyone else.
>>
>>47799069
Inquisitor Casca looks fine. I don't really dig her giant belt-buckle though. I'd try putting something in the center of it.

Other than that, the guy on the right looks like he's got a questionable character; I think the marine on the left has the right idea.
>>
>>47799069
Neat, just mind the huge mold line on her halberd. They're for Inq28?
>>
>>47793419
>>47793504

I thought that was an N7 armor stripe.
>>
>>47799234
If I had a part for it or if my sculpting skills were better I would put an inquisitorial emblem on it. I was thinking of painting it on.

>>47799268
thanks. It is still very much a work in progress, but it is nice to make progress. It was intended for regular 40k, provided nobody spergs out about the spear instead of a sword.

The grey knight swords were really crazy big. Even on the terminators they are huge. Who designed those things? The old metal grey knights weren't like that.

My kitbashed slaughter master, he is suposed to launch "The Maw" spell, even if I kinda fucked up the teeth growing out the rocks

But atleast I didn't put 30$ in a shitty finecast model
>>
>>47800287
You don't like the GW one? They're still selling him as a metal model.
>>
>>47787562

They eat right through varnish so don't repeatedly go over the same area.

How I do my freehands
>put down dots where I want lines to start, end and curve
>let it dry
>draw lines
>let it dry
>color in/blacken out parts

I mostly use them for doing templar iconography
>>
>>47799983

Thats my issue with the GW model, i hate metal more than finecast or any other material, and i would like to handle my minis without acting as im handling an ancient tome or something, for now i will give a look to the other anon's suggestions, in hope that one day they will sell a plastic version

I was reccomended this airbrush, the Badger Air-Brush Co 105 Patriot Fine Gravity Airbrush,
