Shinobi Quest #12
This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.
(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Last thread, Tsuki Norihime met General Doto of the Land of Snow, Talked to Danzo about business and politics, and brought him along to the chunin exams. She charmed her way into her own booth, and watched the semi-final round fight between Neji Hyuga and Hyo Arashi, of Yukigakure.
As the four of you interact, you hear the crowd murmuring again.
Neji has left the arena, and Hyo has been collected by the medical-nin.
You here the proctor announcing once more.

The next round is starting….
The first person you see is Nori’s brother- wearing his trademark jacket. It looks really silly- Neji did call it garish, and you’re inclined to agree. It’s also quite worn- it must’ve been through quite a lot.
The second boy comes out- this must be Sai, the third member of Neji and Naruto’s squad. He’s very pale, and wears dark, muted colors- very different from Naruto’s bright clothing.
Naruto smiles- and assumes a combat stance. You can’t quite make out Sai’s face from here to see if he returns the smile.

I just haven't gotten to know him well enough.
Immediately, Sai jumps back- unfurling several scrolls as her does so. You see him splash a bit of int on each as he does so- and the drawings come out of the scrolls!
Three painted lions, now in front of Sai, are in a formation around him.
Naruto hasn’t moved. He just stands there, smiling.
“Feh, my brother isn’t taking this seriously, ya know?” Nori growls, peering over the edge of the booth.
“Inaction doesn’t mean he’s underestimating his opponent, young lady. Especially if they are familiar with one another’s techniques.” Danzo says, sitting, but still paying close attention.
Finally, as Sai and his lions begin to inch closer, Naruto begins making a series of handsigns-
“He’s using the shadow clone technique-” You, Danzo, and Nori all say at once.
The three of you look at each other, surprised.
“Look!” Hinata shouts.
You turn back to the fight- Naruto has summoned three shadow clones, and is using them to fight off Sai’s lions. The real Naruto has taken off- directly towards Sai. You can see him wielding two tri-pronged kunai.
In response, you see Sai pull out two tanto, and charge.
The two clash, surrounded by the clones and lions. Both of them are very proficient in kenjutsu- each being able to keep up with one another, with blindingly fast slashes, stabs and parries. Sai’s weapons are particularly interesting; one is giving off white streaks of chakra as it moves, while the other seems to be coated in a black substance- ink, maybe?

Danzo speaks up again. “That would be Kakashi’s blade- the White Light Chakra Sabre. Belonged to his dad, Sakumo, before he passed. I’m not surprised he lent it to his adoptive brother, though. The other blade, I have no idea.”
The two continue to exchange blows- though you can see Sai beginning to pressure him further. Maybe they weren’t so equally matched, after all?
Eventually, Naruto jumps back- throwing the three-pronged kunai as he does so. Sai deflects them as he changes. Naruto, however, is ready.
“Wind Release! Gale Palm!” he shouts, clapping his hands together.
A great gale surges forth, stopping Sai in his tracks. Eventually, the wind knocks him over, and he flies back towards the arena wall just beneath your booth. You hear him hit it- hard.
Naruto releases the technique, and seems to already be preparing something else- he seems to be trying to form some sort of chakra ball…
But as he does so, black snakes, the color of ink, begin to wrap around him, biting him in places. You figure Sai must have released them as he was flying backward?
The chakra in Naruto’s hand dissipates- you can see he’s having issues trying to remove them
“When facing a superior opponent, you must gain an advantage- outwit them, bind them, hamstring them-” Danzo says, listing off various methods.
You see Sai step forward back into view- unrolling a rather large piece of parchment.
You’ve never seen anything like it’s drawing, which you can clearly make out from your seat-

You know Sai is actually not a bad option from a CK2 perspective. That painting is definitely a clever trick to pass on, Kakashi would have tons of stuff for nieces or nephews, the Hatakes aren't SO important that it'd basically be getting absorbed.

“I hoped not to need to break this out so early, Naruto. Forgive me” you hear Sai say below you.
You seem him flick his tanto- ink hits different pieces of the giant parchment- and a deafing roar fills the arena.
“Fear,” Danzo finishes, “is also a wonderful tool.”
The large black fox begins pulling itself free of the parchment, slowly. It’s eyes are a searing red- and it howls repeatedly in anger.
Nori immediately pulls away from the window- you see her squat down and face away from the arena, covering her ears.
“No, no, no. It isn’t him. It couldn’t possibly be. It’s just a trick. A dirty trick….”
Meanwhile, Naruto’s face has gone white. The beast finally finishes pulling itself out of the parchment, growling ferociously towards Naruto, and the crowd at large.
“Quite the rendition.” Danzo says, stroking his chin. “You’d think the boy had seen it himself.”
Naruto, finally, seems to have freed himself from the ink snakes, just narrowly avoiding the swipe of the multi-tailed monster.
His face has changed- the smile he wore, long gone. He looks furious.
It seems claws are not this beast’s only weapons- it’s tails, swinging wildly around the arena, also fail to hit the dodging Naruto, but are pockmarking the arena with all sorts of holes.
“Release it! This creature doesn’t belong here, or anywhere!” you hear Naruto yell over the roars of the fox.
“Not until you give up, Naruto. I’m sorry, but this is the way it has to be.” Sai responds, barely audible over the commotion.
The crowd, meanwhile, is in an uproar- some of them seem to be breaking into a panic.

Meanwhile, the fox hasn’t stopped it’s enraged assault, Naruto only barely managing to dodge the strikes of the beast’s tail and claws.
Nori is still in the back of the booth, muttering to herself….
Eventually the two of them land on the beast’s back, still exchanging blows. The melee continues, with Naruto having to dodge underneath the fox at several points.
As Sai chases him, you see it- Naruto has left a clone on the fox’s back. As Sai returns, seemingly losing track of Naruto for just a moment. The clone choses this time to make it’s move, lunging towards Sai. He turns, quickly engaging it, and eventually dispatching it. However…
Naruto is underneath them, charging up that same attack from before.
You hear him yell- echoing throughout the arena.
“RASENGAN!”
He flies upward, the spinning ball burrowing through the ink monstrosity. He surfaces just underneath Sai’s feet- who tries to jump away and block…. But is isn’t entirely successful.
The attack clips him, and you see him go spiraling down into another one of the Arena’s walls.
The giant ink monster begins to melt, and Naruto lands, panting.
You also see Sai, struggling to get to his feet. As he does so, Naruto readies himself once again-
Only for Sai to speak.
“I give up. Summoning that thing took most of my chakra. I’m sorry, Naruto.”
Immediately the proctor appears-
Naruto Uzuamki wins by way of forfeit!
The crowd, now worked up, erupts in applause.

“Sorry about that, Tsuki. I got a little worked up. I’ll be alright.” Nori says- although she still looks rather concerned.

Nori just smiles.
“Never change, princess.”
Meanwhile, it seems one of the proctors is making an announcement.
“There will be a brief intermission while the contestants recover. Please use this time as you wish. We will reconvene in one hour.”

The three of you gather up by the door- it’s snack time!
As you walk towards the concession area, the three of you share a bit of small talk. It’s mostly Nori and Hinata going back and forth about the finals- Nori is of course convinced her brother will win, while Hinata keeps insisting that she not count Neji out. You just laugh- partially because you aren’t really sure which one will win.
Eventually you get to the concessions, and you order your friends all some takoyaki. The vendor happily complies, and within a few minutes you have yourself four orders of Takoyaki. At this point, the three of you split- Nori heads back up towards the Hokage booth, while you and Hinata walk over to where the Hyuga were sitting before.
Seems like many have left for various reasons, although you’re sure they’ll be back. Hiashi is still here, though, so you and Hinata walk over to him. He greets the two of you- rather cheerfully. You exchange some pleasantries, and he thanks you for bringing Hinata back before the finals. He seems confident that Neji will win the finals- maybe they have something up their sleeve? Hinata’s a sweetheart, but is Neji is anything to go by, you aren’t sure what they might have planned.
As people come piling back in, you say your goodbyes, heading back up towards your booth. Upon entering, you present Danzo with the Takoyaki.
“Ah, thank you, Tsuki-dono. With everything that’s been going on, I’d forgotten that we haven’t had a proper meal.” he says, happily accepting the snack.
While he eats, you can barely restrain your curiosity.
“So… what was that thing? Nori was absolutely terrified of it, and Naruto certainly didn’t seem very happy to see it, either.”
He finishes chewing, then begins to speak.

“But why would they be so afraid of it?” you ask. “Certainly they’ve never seen such a thing before…”
“Maybe not physically. Their mother, Kushina, is the jinchuuriki, or sacrificial vessel, of the Nine-Tails. Who knows how that has affected them?” Danzo says, finishing his snack.
Maybe that’s why Kushina is so scary….? It’s a distinct possibility.

Kurama literally yells his name at you if you talk to him for than like, five minutes. He isn't exactly subtle. I just don't think Kishimoto wanted to humanize Kurama by giving him a name until later in the series- but it makes no sense for the people who are owning him as a living weapon not to know his name.

I always interpreted him, and most of the others, as being too prideful and full of old hurt and hate to give out their names freely.

Nice pic. I still recommend the Meteor Hammer (metal ball on string) especially if we/dad can design a way of allowing Chakra to be fused with and expelled from the ball at designated points. This would allow the user to direct the ball mid flight unexpectedly. Get it into an arc that takes it into the blindspot and redirect to contact with blindspot point.

What's Hinata's chakra element? If it's water or earth we could go with "figure out the exact muddiness that's most difficult to use gentle fist in, teach hinata how to produce that and then put shitloads of training into fighting in that mud so she can turn the battleground into one she's way more suited to fighting in"

You opt to focus on the fight, but will judge Neji work further weaknesses.
“Everyone, please return to your seats! The final match will begin shortly!” you hear one of the proctors shout.
Finally.
Eventually, Naruto and Neji walk out- the wounds from their previous bouts seem to have been healed. They stop in the center of the arena- still damaged from the Ink-Kurama- and raise their hands to the onlooking crowd, to a chorus of cheers.
A proctor appears, and begins his announcement.
Chunin Exam Final Match!
Naruto Uzumaki!
VS!
Neji Hyuga!
The two boys bow towards one another- then immediately jump back to the far side of the arena.
Begin!
The proctor returns to his booth with a *poof*- and the match begins.
Naruto immediately starts performing the shadow clone technique again- this time, producing 6 clones.
More than before?
“He was worried about making the clones more durable before, to counter the ink lions. Now that this isn’t the case, I’d suspect this is probably his current limit.” Danzo says, returning to analysis mode.
Neji activates his Byakugan in response- although you’re sure he won’t be able to tell them apart; that is one of the shadow clone technique biggest strengths.
All seven Narutos run at Neji, who immediately drops into his Gentle Fist stance.
“Eight Trigrams! 32 Palms!”
As the Narutos approach, they’re taken out in sequence, easily.
“You know that isn’t going to work, Naruto.” you hear Neji say.
“I know. Just making sure you’re awake, you know?” He says, smiling.
Naruto produces his three-pointed kunai, and they exchange blows for a while- with Neji always getting in a blow or two at the end of it. The Byakugan really is a terror in close combat…
Backing off slightly, Naruto again makes the symbols for the Shadow Clone technique. The clones form up around Neji, and quickly begin to run in a large circle around him.
Neji waits patiently- you can see he’s unfazed. The Narutos continue to run in the circle, until Neji finally goes to swing at one. In response, they all jump away simultaneously, forming a far ring. Naruto throws up a different set of hand symbols this time-
“Wind Release! Air Bullets!”
Pressurized spheres of air appear around one of the Narutos- the one you assume to be real. They follow him as he runs- the illusion begins again. Seven bullets for seven Narutos.
In one fluid motion, they all dart towards Neji!
Seven Bullets of Air, followed closely by the clones. Surely he’ll use it….
“Eight Trigrams! Palms Revolving Heaven!”
Neji spins, again becoming a whirling cyclone of chakra. The bullets of air collide with it- seemingly not doing much damage. Shortly afterward, six Narutos follow up, kunai outstretched.

Sure enough, as Neji is preoccupied with deflecting the six clones with his Revolving Heaven Technique, you see the seventh and true Naruto a ways off- preparing another technique.
“Wind Release! Gale Palm!” he shouts- producing another strong torrent of air, just like in his fight with Sai.
Neji keeps whirling- the gale collides with him just as the final clone is dispatched. It hits him dead on- and he goes careening towards the far wall. You don’t hear him hit it, but you see it. Ouch.
He needs to fight harder! If he constantly stays on the defense, he’s going to lose!
As Neji gets back up, scuffed and bruised, you cut him a deep glare, while keeping your frown hidden behind your fan. Very ladylike. You know he can see it with those eyes of his- he’d better.
Without giving him any time to rest, another six Narutos are upon him! They’re definitely trying to keep him boxed in for another-
“Wind Release! Gale Palm!” Naruto yells again, from almost underneath you.
Neji, though, was ready this time.
He dispatches the clones in short order, and prepares an attack of his own.
“Eight Trigrams! Vacuum Strike!”
As the torrent of air hits him, you see him splitting it- with his fists! He seems to be using his palm strikes to emit a short burst of force, enough to deflect the attack.
As Naruto holds the Jutsu, you see Neji progressing steadily up, through the attack, as if he was moving against the flow of a mighty river. It’s mesmerizing, almost like a dance.
As he does so, his eyes meet yours; just for a moment.
You find yourself blushing, despite yourself.

“Wind Release! Gale Palm!”
Again, Naruto fires off a column of wind- Neji, however, continues to progress using his technique.
He seems to have found a way to counter it!
However, as he does so, you hear him grunt in pain- you see kunai embedded in his palms- and slices around his arms!
You see Naruto- as he’s channelling the technique, his clones are throwing projectiles into the wind tunnel. Boosted by the strength of the gale, it seems like Neji cannot deflect them as easily.
You look back to Naruto- who’s now running straight at Neji, along with his clones!
Neji again drops into his stance-
“Eight Trigrams! Palms Revolving Heaven!”
Close after clones throws itself upon the whirling chakra-
“RASENGAN!” You hear Naruto yell as he charges. Your eyes dart back to him to see that same whirling sphere of chakra from before, heading straight at Neji!
He tries to adjust, to deflect the attack, but between his wounds and dispatching the clones, he’s simply too slow. He does manage to deflect it, but not completely. Instead of the chest, where Naruto was aiming, it catches Neji in the shoulder.
You hear him scream out in pain as the attack connects- warping and twisting the joint. He’s eventually blown back, rolling on the floor. His right shoulder is a bloody mess- his arm bent at an unnatural angle.
He struggles to his feet- only to land on his knees. You’re surprised he’s conscious.
But not only is he conscious- he’s looking right at you, as Naruto approaches.

The crowd erupts into cheers!
Looking around, though, you can see Hiashi Hyuga, frowning in the crowd.
