I need advice on RPing the edgiest possible 2fast4u type rogue character. I've got most the character figured out, but I need to think up some throwaway lines to say like when killing stuff, taking damage, or whatever.

Kindly post anything inspirational you can think of, pic related

Troll opinion or not, Space Marines are maybe the edgiest thing in 40k and on /tg/.

The problem is that being a Saturday morning cartoon villain or sadomasochism fetishism isn't really how you get edgy nonsense; you make an unrepentant anti-hero with contrived methods of success and basically every combination of edgy buzzwords.

>ANGELS OF DEATH
>FLESH TEARERS
>BLOOD ANGELS
>IT IS BETTER TO DIE FOR THE EMPEROR THAN LIVE FOR YOURSELF

These are all the calling cards of the edge. If /co/ can admit Judge Dredd is edge lord central you can accept the same for its derivative.
>>
>>47596949

There's actually a lot of contention about whether or not it's a parody.

Mostly because it says Coldsteel likes the band Nine-Inch Nails, but apparently hates lead songwriter Trent Reznor.

Everyone just went on and on about how badass he was and how we had to watch out or he would teleport behind us wand unsheathe katana or some shit and he was super hard to kill.

>Fails to assassinate anyone on the council. Gets fought off by a terminally ill Drell. Completely and irrevocably ruins any future chance for Cerberus to take control of the council.
>Fails to kill Miranda despite dropping out of an air vent onto her and having every advantage
>Out numbers Shepard and friends 30 to 1 and has an attack helicopter. Shepard and friends kill all of his friends, beat up the helicopter and slap him from one side of cathedral to other and back again. Leng survives because the building fell down on top of Shepard. Still manages to fail at killing Shapard.
>On home turf, Outnumbers Shepard and friends 30 to 1 not counting the army of his dudes we had to get through first, keeps getting regenerated from environment. Goes to sneak attack Shepard from behind whilst Shepard is fucking around with computer. Gets stabbed to death by Shepard who didn't even have to get out of the chair.

Was this meant to be a comedy character?
>>
>>47597142
You hit the nail exactly on the head.

I ran a Mass Effect RPG where the recurring villain only became one because the party spared her the first time around. The second time, she ambushed them after a particular tough battle and kidnapped the party leader. Every roll was made right there on the table.

You must refer to the 70 year old wizard as 'kid'.

Never show your face ever, even when it makes complete sense to do so.

Parents dead.

Wield katana, or katana like blade. Even if it is not a katana mechanics wise, you will refer to it as a katana.

Never feel any pain, it's always tolerable.

Anything you do not have or are unable to obtain is for the weak and is a sign of weakness.

I find it funny how Altair, Ezio, Haytham, Connor and Edward were all very non-edgy characters.
>>
>>47598637

Connor toed the line, but I chalk that up to a combination of his native heritage and the possibility he legitimately had autism.

But you're right, for a bunch of people who were famous members of what is essentially a death cult, none of the PC assassin's ever reached edgelord status.
>>
>>47598637
>Ezio was just a very angry young man seeking to avenge his family
>"Requiescat in pace" is an edgelord calling card line
>>
>>47598766
Ezio was a Trickster at heart as evidenced by the vast majority of his behavior.

"Requiescat in pace" literally means "Rest in Peace" and when the Assassins say it they are genuinely wishing their targets a peaceful rest in the afterlife which is the exact opposite of what an edgelord would do.

>>47598758
Connor was DEFINITELY autistic. Amazing tactical and combative knowledge, but he was completely shit in social situations and couldn't plan for the long term at all.
>>
>>47598174

I romanced Tali in ME2, and Miranda survived KL. But, I also did her loyalty mission, so... I dunno.

See now you're starting to touch on the real hart of the edgelord problem. Which is they take a lot of things which are cool, or even just innocuous when done by a certain character they like, and apply it completely out of context or in a manner which is just grating.

"Requiescat in pace" is part of Ezio's flair. He's a chatty fellow and that phrase is just him dropping a common phrase in a period-appropriate language. It's just him expressing typical Assassin rhetoric about how any ill will he has towards his target doesn't transcend the current life.

Edgelords miss the mark, and see it as more of a boast. It's the same shit as "nothin' personal, kid". It's the superior fighter expressing a sort of disdain towards the person with weaker skill and training. Like the edgelord character always knew victory was a given.

A lot of behavior we associate with edgelord characters feels completely normal and almost cool when applied to better-written ones. Look at almost any Harrison Ford character and you'll see behavior which in almost any other circumstance we'd call edgy.

Unless it's already set, your last name should be mashed together from what I call the "Liefeld phonemes". Blood, doom, dark, kill, shot, dead, death, gun, fist, you get the idea.

As for things to say:
>I'm beyond saving.
>I'll teach you to mess with (token character created solely to be killed)!
>I don't believe in forgiveness.
And quote nü metal lyrics like it's badass.
>I'll cut your life into pieces!
>>
>>47599361
Correct. Though I'm pretty sure she also dies if she's not loyal.

Tangent: anyone else think Miranda would've made a great Spectre? Her ability set kicks ass, she can lead a team, she exposed Cerberus's top-secret plan while they were trying to hunt down her, specifically.

Edge is when you do all this shit and expect to be taken 100% seriously. No humor at all. You are deep, mysterious, and cool. You are the most mature player at the table and if someone else makes fun of your character that just proves how childish they are.

Be 14 again.
>>
>>47597097
I've decided that Kai Leng's implants don't actually increase his reflexes or strength any. Instead, they're nano-fabricators that dispense a cloud of nanites into that air around him, rendering everybody who breathes them in mentally retarded. That's why, in every cutscene he's in, Shepard and all his allies suddenly become totally useless.
>>
>>47598174
He may or may not be parody. Even if he isn't, the other characters are just as silly and over-the-top as he is so it isn't like he sticks out very much.

I mean, McRee even has BAMF carved into his belt buckle.
>>
>>47604441
She said she would've just lead the mission to the Collector Base herself, but the Illusive Man wanted Shepard. In a bit of dialogue when you talk to her early on in ME2. If I'm remembering right. Plus she volunteers to be both the tech expert and the biotic expert (ill-advised as those both would be).

I kinda get what you mean, that she comes off as superior, but she's there holding the line with everyone else.
>>
>>47604386
I feel like she has the right skillset, but as a character, she just ceased to impress me so utterly that I wouldn't want to give her the special treatment.
>>
Actions and Character Traits:

>black and red everything
>acts like a dick to every NPC
>acts like a dick to party members, generally uncooperative in the most stupid ways
>unnecessary insults
>unnecessary brutal or graphic violence--decapitations and dismemberment on a regular basis
>anime-tier fighting style and weapon choices
>one liners whenever possible
>maniacal laughter at inappropriate times
>kills people and steals things for no reason, especially when other options are obvious

Lines when fighting:
>"Blood will flow."
>"You weren't strong enough."
>"You was weak. Don't waste my time again."
>"Why do weaklings always have to be so loud?"
>"Heh."
>"You can't escape your fate."
>"Your soul is mine."
>"Your blood is mine."
>"Let the blood rain."
>"Your existence dishonors me."
>"You were a mistake. I'll fix that."
>"I am the strongest."
>"All that matters is who is strongest."

Lines when injured or defeated:
>"Damn."
>"Not... here..."
>"Heh."
>"You're pretty good."
>"To think the likes of you... could even touch me..."
>"To think I could be bested by someone like you."
>"He's fast!"

>Isn't Reaper an intentional parody?
He's never treated like a comedic relief character as far as the actual storytelling is concerned, but he does get mocked relentlessly by pretty much everyone else in-game for being an edgelord. Honestly I think that's a pretty good direction to go with him.
>>
>>47605357
The story takes him seriously, but the other heroes don't?
>>
>>47605366
He's as tough as anyone else in the cast and its not like he trips over banana peels for comedic effect or anything, he just acts like his typical edgelordy self while doing villain stuff and other characters occasionally make snide comments about it.
>>
Make an asshole with a grimdark backstory and turn it up past ten. Also make sure any flaws are actually positive qualities(e.g., vampires) or that they are only flaws by proxy of their terrible awesomeness.

Always bear in mind that this is not about exploring a character, it's about wish fulfillment. Edgy 12 year olds are edgy because they want to rebel against societies rules and conventions without any understanding of what they are rebelling against.

example
> has a tragic backstory
> has tattoos
>totally dark and evil
>conflicted about how dark and evil he is and agonizes over it
>cynical to the point of absurdity
>be a bitter mean spirited confrontational asshole
>but it's only because you're surrounded by people who don't understand

Like that dude you meet in the first game who spends his life idolizing and trying to be Commander Shepard. A joke character and mockery of all the super serious weeaboo fightan magic ninja characters.

And that would have been fine and quite funny if it had been the case. But the way the others spent the entire game sucking his reputation cock and generally worshiping the ground he walked on was a little too far.

He spent his career that we saw getting bitch slapped by The Shepard, surviving by luck and dying like a little bitch.

The letter was just stupid.

I have a friend who's exactly like that. I've taken numerous region classes at university, specialized in political theory and cultural studies, and I went to catholic school when I was in my edgy nihilist phase. I know enough about religion to make an informed choice about my personal beliefs. His response is always some long winded pseudo-relativistic diatribe about the futility of existence and the meaningless of whatever. He's a freaking business major, but acts like he's king atheist, lord of dick mountain. The worst part is, I generally agree with him, but I'd prefer to live a happy delusion then some edgy fag factory because one option is clearly more socially productive than the other.

And 'nobody agrees' is clearly an overstatement, since the majority of people in this thread seem to know what we're talking about.
>>

Exactly what I'm saying.

Its like one person or group of people made a joke character, then another group got hold of it, tried to adapt it into a srs bzzns character and shoehorned him into a story that had no room for him. Killing Thane was just slapping the [insert cheap drama here] button in the laziest possible manner.

From a story point of view removing Leng and letting Thane die of his illness would have not impacted the story one jot.

You're saying them because they're contrarian and shocking, hence edgy, because a rational person doesn't need to say things like that in public conversation. It's like talking about your sick slipknot hoodie and that really gory horror movie you like; you only get away with that if other people are already edgelords.
>>

Oh that makes sense. Being contrarian and shocking is pretty much the definition of edgy.

But that's not why I'm saying them, I'm saying them 'cause I believe them.

and fuck what you "need to say ... in public conversation". The rules of public conversaion are A. A meme, and B. Normie shit. Let babbys get butthurt, imo.

Dredd is pretty blatant parody. It doesn't take itself anywhere near seriously. Actual edge is characterised by being extremely serious and playing itself completely straight.

This is edgy. Its not about your personal beliefs, its about the inability to control yourself from attempting to assert them in conversations they don't belong in. Its essentially social autism, being unable to take proper social cues or function normally.

I understand where you're coming from anon, but I've always thought that much like grimdarkness, anything in the 40K universe is essentially a parody of itself. I'll remind you that the Slannesh-affiliated Chaos Marines used to canonically wear white armor with pink trim and wield what were basically really loud guitars as weapons. How serious could it possibly be?
Besides, >>47613262 makes a pretty good point.
>>
>>47613341
40k used to be much more satire. It used to satirize what it currently embraces.
>>
>>47596023

Okay, here we go. There are different flavors of edge nowadays.

Pride Edge:

1) Whenever a villain does something really evil, be unaffected by how evil that is. Don't show any negative emotion. In fact, show amusement. Bonus points for critiquing the villain and trying to one-up him, telling him how someone *competent* (you) would have done it.

2: Always remember: nobody, especially not the villain, can faze you. You are above everyone and everything they can possibly do.

3. It's not enough to call other people "kid." You have to really mean it. Especially if you're younger than them. It's not about age, it's about experience, and you've got the *edge* in both on them.

4) Whenever anyone beats you for any reason, they didn't really beat you.

5) If the person you're talking to is weaker than you, mock him for his weakness. If he's stronger than you, mock him for relying too much on power and imply you can beat him through skill.

6) The more words you use on someone, the more of your precious time they've wasted.

Rage Edge:

1) YOU ARE ALWAYS ANGRY ALL THE TIME! IF SOMETHING ISN'T PISSING YOU OFF YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

2) EVERYONE ELSE IS EITHER AS ANGRY AS YOU AT EVERYTHING OR ELSE THEY ARE A FAGGOT.

3) YOU POINT YOUR ANGER AT THE ENEMY BECAUSE IT IS PRODUCTIVE BUT YOU DON'T BOTHER SUPPRESSING YOUR RAGE AROUND NORMAL PEOPLE, NPCS, AND OTHER GOOD GUYS BECAUSE THEY ARE FAGGOTS.

4) ALL DIPLOMACY MUST INVOLVE KILLING SOMEONE ON THE ENEMY SIDE.
4A) ANYONE YOU USE DIPLOMACY ON IS AN ENEMY.
4B) NPC FAGGOTS CAN AVOID THIS BY BEING SUFFICIENTLY SUBMISSIVE TOWARDS YOU.

5) YOU DO NOT COMPROMISE EVER.

Usually it's a mixture of both, because there's a lot of overlap. I think the most common thing is to act like a Pride on the surface, while the RAGE drives the "subconscious." Or something like that.

This. Miranda has all of Liara's bookish tendencies without any of her cold ruthlessness.

>>
>>47596968
The only reason they wind up coming across as so particularly edgy is because the company seems to have convinced themselves in the last decade that they're unambiguous good guys. I think I've just figured out what Kai Leng is.

He is the DMs weeaboo 13 and a half years old brother.

The one who wrote his characters backstory to be as "epic" as possible without taking into consideration the levels of his character or the characters around him

It's like writing a character whose heir to an ancient and empowering bloodline, top grades at the Assassin Guild School that he got in to on scholarship, powered up by making kickass deals with the devil and is a world renowned assassin of kings and slayer of dragons. Campaign starts at level 1.

But because he's brother to the DM he got all the NPCs to big up his never before mentioned backstory achievemnts and it works really well until you meet him and the numbers and dice don't lie and you slap the ever loving shit out of him. DM then saves him by circumstance. DM's Weeb brother pulls shit eating grin.

Eventually the DM gets sick of his shit and removes the plot armour and the weeb gets stabbed in the ribs.
>>
>>47650083

Eh.

I read it as an inexperienced DM thought he was making a really cool recurring rival villain, then swung fucking wide.

Talking up some hero killer villain, then seeing him get trounced and save him by fiat is something new GMs do all the time.

I was stunned when I discovered Rouge had rudimentary breast jiggle physics in Sonic Adventure 2.

I spent hours doing that. I feel so dirty thinking about what I've done

Right on anon. Space Marines stop being edge when you think about the fact that they lose a lot, they're kind of pathetic from an outside view, and they lack the sort of deliberately cynical amorality that makes the characters which inspired our friend Coldsteel so kewl in the first place.
Space Marines work because they *think* they're knights in shining armor, but they're actually abused child soldiers who have become brutal thugs for a genocidal authoritarian theocracy.

They still save the day and can be heroic, though.

People fell in love with the style and personality, and they just couldn't let it go.

I had more than one guilty, self hating fap to those crudely bouncing melons.

I hate younger me and resent most of the memories he left me.
