This is a meme, and one that has sadly proliferated since WW1, owing to the understandably bitter and cynical literature that came out of that period. In reality, humans are ASS at killing each other. We're good at killing things we don't identify as human, thanks to herd instinct, but due to that self same instinct it's very emotionally traumatic to kill something we identify as another human IE a herd member. The solution? Deconstruction and the creation of 'other'.
Military boot camp exists to partially deconstruct the individual you are when you come into it. It breaks you down so you can operate in uniformity with other individuals, and mentally and physically prepares you for the rigors of combat. In Korea and Vietnam they took the approach of being exceptionally harsh and even dehumanizing, just so that when soldiers actually went into combat where things would be much worse, they would be prepared.
Looking another human being in the eyes and killing them is very traumatic. If it isn't, by that point you've already dehumanized your opponent and ceased to empathize with them. Whole social structures exist for the express purpose of creating a sense of national 'identity' and supranational 'others'. These process has existed since communities and civilizations were a thing, simply as a defense mechanism - in this way, we do not see the raiders or outsiders who come for our food as brothers in need, but rather 'others' to be destroyed. By creating sub-groups within the human species, herds, aka Communities and Nations, we use our own instincts to our advantage.
Humans aren't particularly destructive, we're just good at making TOOLS. And a soldier is a tool, built by society. We use these tools to kill each other. Unfortunately, the psychological levers we use to get away with this also have a tendency to get away from us.
