Newcomer to 40k here. I started collecting some Space Marines back in the day, roughly 7-10 years ago, and all of those Space Marines have much smaller bases than the new Space Marines, even some Dark Angels vets I picked up recently. Do I have to rebase each and every single one of them or can I still play them with the smaller bases?

can vespid JSJ? i'm assuming they can't because of 2d6 movement instead of 6" but want to beg sure

Also, does ap3 really make a difference on S5 vs AP5?

I really want to like the vespid but even with thier I6 Ld9 and decent rules they just seem extremely worthless for the points cost
>>

Vespid are jump infantry, not jetpack, so they can't JSJ but they can move 12" in the movement phase.

That's just because they're in the Tau codex. As a unit, they're pretty dang solid.

You just have better tools at your disposal.

>>
>>47536825
AP3 vs AP5 honestly just comes down to what you're fighting.
If you know you're gonna be fighting a MEQ-type army, you can't get much better. Versus a GEQ-type army though, not so much.

Also, not really my place to say this, but don't not use Vespid just because they're sub-optimal.
It'd be a real breath of fresh air to see them on the table from an enemy's point-of-view, and i think it'd go a long way in terms of improving the reputation of Tau players in general. Plus, from a strategic point of view, I doubt most people who would play against you as Tau would think that you'd bring some.

Base size does, though. Blasts and close combat, not to mention simply interacting with terrain all use the base, rather than the model. .

all kroot really need are some more plastic options. Plastic oxen, hounds and a shaper is all the unit wants.
>>
>>47537362
They aren't the best units ever but to claim they need to be better is utterly delusional.
>>
>>47537362
groups of 20 not 30, 6+ armor save, if you add sniper rounds they are the same cost per unit as fire warriors because you are always going to need the shaper and hound

the only thing that makes them worthwhile is the infiltrate + acute senses, but you already have better options for that from stealth suits
>>
>>47537409
Why do you need either?and 6+ is entirely irreverent, if you arent putting them in cover you are wasting your time, and their rules. infiltrate means you can grentee they will be in range to attack a specific target, from turn one. 20 snipers means 5 wounds regardless of toughness, which is pretty nice. point is they are cheap, and can both hold back and mid feild objectives, whilst also putting out a modest amount of fire power
i cant recall off the top of my head, but dont they also have like stelth(forests) or something? not great, but it basically means 4++ everywhere

>>

point for point, i would say yes. tacs have a serious identity crisis.

thats not to say tacs are bad in all circumstances, (eg demi-company), or really 'bad' at all in compared to some troops (i'm looking at you slugga boys) but they sufferer from being generalists in a game that rewards specialists.
>>
>>47537452
>4++ everywhere

>what is ignore cover

you would need the shaper because you are going to be nowhere near an ethereal if you take one, 7ld and pretty bad saves is just a recipe for your entire unit legging it instead of doing their job

Can Kroot eat Tyranids? What would happen if they did?
>>
>>47537598
there's no point, you'd wouldn't change your mind. You'd just go on thinking tacticals are worse. I don't play tau, and I can tell you without a doubt, if I did I would never take kroot. Ever.

Here you go. Tacticals have:

>3+ saves vs a 6+
>options for special and heavy weapons
>options for good cheap transports
>atsknf
>sergeants have a chance to do something in challenges
>better S, T, BS, I, and leadership
>combat squads

Tacticals can at least be made slightly useful. Kroot are just fodder, and will get run down by basically anything in assault or shot/flamed off the board in droves. The only reason for someone telling a tau player to use kroot is if they want to beat the person.

>endless training and wargames

That's the logical conclusion. Higher ranking members probably study military theory if the paragraphs about travelling to see Puretide is any indication. Shadowsun also has a personal dilemma about joining a breeding program so that's something that Fire Warriors might get up to.
>>
>>47537757
>If so, what % occupies the Fire Caste in every Sept?

Don't ask GW for hard numbers.

>How many resources are dedicated to Fire Caste military.

Well, how do you break that down? Because resources dedicated to the Earth Caste often wind up in Fire Caste hands.

Basically all Tau resources are dedicated to expansion, either directly through conquest and diplomacy, or indirectly through research and training.

>Is there anything productive they can do while in long-time (years) reserves?

Every four years of service, a firewarrior undertakes a Trial of Fire, to attempt promotion to the next rank.

Aside from that, they train. But it's a more modern real world style of training than, say, Space Marines. They not only exercise and practice accuracy and discipline, but also study the art of warfare and maintain military academies. The higher ranking members also advise the Tau military council. They also use cryotech during long FTL trips.

Keep in mind Firewarriors prepare to fight from the moment they're born. Even before conception, generations of selective breeding have prepared their genetics for combat. As soon as they're able, they're split into groups that will persist for life, and train for years until they're promoted to Shas'la and sent off to expand the Empire.
>>
>The Silver Skulls of the Adeptus Astartes encountered Kroot that had assimilated DNA from the Eldar and gained powerful psychic powers, which allowed them to cover themselves in an illusionary disguise that hid their true nature, appearing instead as dark, midnight-blue creatures with smooth skin, long sinewy limbs, clawed fingers, and large amethyst-purple eyes set in a comparatively small, elongated face that came to a triangular point with two nostril slits at the end, no visible ears, and a mouth full of a double set of razor-sharp teeth. Their psychic disguise was only ruptured when their cerebral connection was broken, such as when their head was severed, after which they would revert back to their true Kroot form.

>They also displayed the ability to generate multiple psychic illusions of themselves in battle, which appeared to their enemies as completely corporeal and capable of causing harm. However the illusions were extremely vulnerable to psychic attacks and would dispel back into thin air when hit by one.

>The Silver Skulls recognised that Kroot with psychic potential posed a grave threat to the Imperium and recommended the planet where they were encountered on be cleansed.

Could a Sept keep in cryostasis a large reserve of firewarriors and awaken them when necessary?
>>
>>47537936
The guns, yeah. I want to be able to run breachers if I feel like it.
>>
>>47537939
Expensive and resource intensive.
Cheaper to keep a flesh flow of new soldiers coming as the old ones die, especially with the pace of weapons technology, retraining the popsicles would take years.
>>
>>47537939
They could, but there's not really a strong reason to.

Firstly, the Empire typically acts as a unified military unit, drawing troops from the septs. They don't normally fight on their own, like you see in the sprawling and disorganized Imperium.

Secondly, a Sept can usually assume it'll have more soldiers in the future than it does in the present, so it makes the most sense to use today's soldiers for expansion, instead of holding them in reserve.

However, if you really like the idea, I see no reason a Sept world under direct invasion couldn't awaken some frozen legion of superior soldiers for defense. The Tau have demonstrated willingness to freeze their top lads.
>>
>>47537969

I don't think it would be more expensive than having them on a ship. They mastered slower-than-light-interstellar travel first. Less food, water, oxygen, space, and resources consumed while in stasis. A significant part of the Fire Caste is always in space anyway in rapid-reaction fleets.
>>
>>47537939
Way to dangerous, theyd have to deal with soldiers with Oldthink ideas and memories that conflict with Truepast.
>>
>>47538019
The Ethereals do rewrite history, but I can't think of any event frozen FW could recall that would be problematic, aside from Farsight who's barely been forgotten anyways.
>>
>>47537939

What about a Sept that have learn the value of keeping a cryostatis reserve with Earth, Fire, Water, and Ethereal Castes in case there's a catastrophic event, regular hazards on a Death World or a total war?
>>
>>47538066
I doubt they would ever freeze an ethereal.

That vehicle doesn't sound Sept-y, but keep in mind every Tau world isn't a Sept. Septs are major economic and cultural centers, the Tau maintain a larger number of myriad of lesser colonies. You could have a frontier colony with a small population that has its castes frozen and rotated out due to frequent disaster.
>>
So Kroot can't eat Nid's, what about if Kroot managed to harvest a bunch of Omophagea organs from some space marines and ate those?

The Omophagea is the organ that allows a space marine to access the memories of those he eats and it sounds like an ability that Kroot would find especially useful.

I'm going to be playing a Kroot in a Rogue Trader game and I'm toying around with a few ideas.
>>
>>47538042
Actually I think Farsight could be a big one, and a big reason why the Farsight Enclaves actually survive.

Prior to his "rebellion", Farsight was Puretide's magnum opus. This was the man that the Ethereals claimed would spearhead Tau Expansion and he actually did it. Imagine waking up after a couple of centuries to find out that this man had rebelled against the Greater Good. It's probably be very hard to swallow for some of the old guard that fought alongside him, especially in his anti-Ork campaigns. Some of those Tau might never be awoken from stasis.

Of course. But supposedly he divides the Tau even to modern times, so I don't think there'd be a need to keep good soldiers frozen. People are mad about Farsight already anyways.

Anon, please.

Kais and Shadowsun were briefed about Farsught's treachery. You know, the guys that were so close to him as to be his siblings. Heck, if Kais didn't fuck up, all three of them would have soul-bounded/married together via the bomding ritual. This was how close they were.

They turned out fine.

Farsight still has a lot of sympathizers and supports within the spets, especially his own sept where they still have statues of him in spite of the the Ethereals decree.

Alright buddy.

To give my two cents: you have to be straight up retarded to look at kroot and Tactical marines and think the kroot are better. They can fullfill more roles, has chapter tactics, will never have leadership issues, and have amazing options. Snipers are so-so. Compared to shit like grav, it is straight up useless. And hey, tacticals have access to that.

But of course, I play Deldar, so sniper doesn't look all that impressive, and your 20 sniper shots *might* get 2 rending hits per turn, and the heavy profile isn't doing them any favours.

You're wasting the mark of slaanesh if you're just taking bolters. Go melee with them. Alternatively just go for Noise Marines with sonic blasters, but you'll pay 5 points extra per marine. Still a better show.

>>

Anti-Psychic, a Culexus has an incredibly strong Pariah aura that assaults the minds and souls of those it touches. Tau, having less souls, probably fare better than Humans exposed to their raw power, but this would be a pain they could never have prepared for.

Dawn Blade steeling life. A Prophecy surrounding him etc. A significant number of backstories of the Eight are old theories behind Farsight's unnatural lifespan:

-Bravestorm: Technology keeps him alive forever trapped within a Crisis suit, just like a Dreadnought.
-Shas'vre Ob'lotai 9-0: an AI engram with the personality of Farsight's long-dead superior.
-Commander Sha'vastos: Put in stasis until he could get the early Puretide Brain Chip.
-Brightsword: inherited the title from a series of previous Brightsword (some of them clones).

The Emperor obliterated Horus's very soul within the Warp.

But little by little, the Chaos Gods have pieced the fragments back together. Horus remains a shadow of his former self, but every day his form grows stronger. It is only a matter of time before no man in the Imperium can stand against him, as it was always meant to be.

But he grows impatient. Why wait a millennia to regain his strength, when the only force opposing his rejuvenation - the God Emperor's influence upon the Warp - could be so easily severed?
>>

That's right, and since it happened, now no armies other than Necrons are allowed on the table. History is rewritten such that none of the events prior to M43 ever occurred. Narrative campaigns are outlawed by president Clinton after the US annexes post-brexit UK and nationalizes GW. Anyone who speaks of factions or fluff that occurred earlier in the timeline is deported to a gulag under a joint agreement with Russia. Old minis must be turned over to be melted down into Finecast, and refusal is punishable by death.

>Thousand Sons
Not really. I mean I like reading but I don't want my legs to randomly fleshchange into a spatula and have my soul eaten for a spell to warm poptarts.
>Necrons
There's no Necron citizenry, I'd be a mindless Warrior. Well, simple lives, more or less immortal, don't have to worry about.. anything really. Ignorance is Bliss personified.
>Tau
Fuck yeah, as long as its not a fringe planet or some shit. I don't want kids so if the rumour about sterilization is real, I don't care either way. I'm fascinated by the culture and society and in general not have a bad life at all.

>(some of them clones)
Oh man, I can't wait for the Chaos Tau campaign books to come out. There's gonna be so many booty-blasted blueberries when Farsight and his bodyguards go full Blood for the Blood God all over their empire.

>Be Tau
>wake up to a brand new day of serving the greater good
>kiss my assigned fish wife goodbye
>go to work as a thrifty water-caste merchant
>meet my freinds' Por'saal T'au V'ral, and Por'saal T'au V'ral on the way
>spend day selling various ethereal approved books and sundries
>get paid
>send all money to the war effort because i have to
>go home
>sleep not having to worry about chaos fuckery, thanks to us being almost invisible to that shit

8/10 would live that life

Shit, for some reason I assumed to be human. I'm going to assume I'm just an Earth Caste builder or scientist as that seems to be the most unexciting role within Tau society. Spend my days designing cool shit and everyone's happy and grateful for it and treated with respect.

Earth Caste bitches are also short and THICC.
