Rule of Law for D&T i guess? Not modern related but you asked.

Anyone going to LA... ha ha, now you're in California.

I'm not super knowledgeable on the mtg market because I'm just starting to move from kitchen table to standard/modern, so what's the most cost-effective and fun thing to play in modern right now?

also, I have a BFZ fatpack sitting around. Should I open it or should I sit on it and wait for it to accrue value?

Burn and Infect are cost effective, but I don't think they're fun. Decks that are fun to play costs at least $600.
>>
>>47316372
>I have a BFZ fatpack sitting around. Should I open it or should I sit on it and wait for it to accrue value?

Everyone and their dog is hoarding full art lands and it's highly unlikely there's a good expedition inside. It probably won't end up being worth shit.
>>
>>47316480
yeah, I figured that would be the case.

anyone else have any insight? I don't want to just go off one person's opinion, and if everyone who's playing now has a bunch of full art how likely is it that new players will want them?
>>
>>47315864
I would have bought 4 Nahiris when she was 10 dollars but I dont play red white.
>>
>>47316514
I'm just going off the logic that people took original zendikar for granted and regretted not opening and ordering more of it. I still remember getting an Arid Mesa and Scalding Tarn out of my only fat pack way back then. The market is flooded with BFZ and there's really nothing that outstanding in the set proper. Radiant Flames and Painful Truths are the only cards I've seen played a lot outside of standard. You could always open the fat pack, but keep the full art land pack sealed.
>>
>>47316480
I dont like the full art lands. Sure they look nice but everytime I see someone play one, all I see is a hipster. Take your duel lands and go back to starbux.
>>
Do I buy Lilis to finish Junk sans goofy or buy heirarchs to finish Infect?

If I want to play modern, is there even a point in trying to build my own deck or do I just go online and use some $500+ list if I ever want to get a chance of winning?

It's not the price that baffles me, is the fact that everyone literally plays the same two dozens decks.
>>

Jund is still #1 right now, but not everyone can afford it

Modern is not a brewer's format. Unless you don't mind losing for a while (read months) while you suss out card numbers and sideboard options and optimal builds (oh and you're REALLY good at the game and the format) then i do not suggest trying your own build in modern.
>>

Are we posting mardu lists?

4 Wall of Omens
4 Kitchen Finks
3 Restoration Angel

2 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Path to Exile
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
2 Lightning Helix
2 Terminate
1 Anguished Unmaking
1 Painful Truths
4 Lingering Souls
1 Thoughtseize

4 Marsh Flats
3 Arid Mesa
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 Godless Shrine
2 Sacred Foundry
1 Blood Crypt
2 Blackcleave Cliffs
2 Shambling Vent
2 Plains
1 Swamp
1 Mountain
1 Fetid Heath
1 Rugged Prairie

Only problem I've been having is the manabase. It's hard to have a primarily white deck that also wants to cast inquisition on turn 1. Blackcleave cliffs can't shore up the gaps. Any solutions?

>>47319886

I haven't played the deck in a while but i'll tell you roughly how things go.
Alright so basically in the deck you'll probably win game 1 hands down against most decks barring maindeck gravehate. Makeshift Mannequin is a great way of being able to dodge your Hulk from eating a Path to Exile if you're reanimating from graveyard when Footsteps leaves you too vulnerable to Path.

Game 2 you'll need an alternative plan of having a reliable sac outlet to loop whether they're bringing in extra paths or other stuff like night of souls betrayal/RiP. Alternative plans for being able to loop combos and having a sac outlet are Greater Gargaddon(it's in exile when suspended so they cannot really interact with it barring Eldrazi decks)Venser Shaper Savant(this is actually the original Hulk combo in STD at the time) where Venser can bounce not just a permanent but a SPELL being cast on the stack as well and you can do a loop where you bounce their entire board(including lands!)which also reminds me that I need to test Brutal Expulsion in my list somewhere for the same purpose. Other alternative plans involve just ramping(lists using Pentad Prism) and/or grabbing out a Grave Titan instead with the Hulk. A really janky but alternative plan is to use Vampire Hexmage with Lost Auramancers grabbing out a Hive Mind and then killing them with various Pacts(Pact of the Titan etc.)

If I was you i'd at least get 2 copies of Through the Breach if possible. The deck kind of needs 2 minimum so you can also just cheat the Hulk in from play and even use Emrakul if needed.

>>
>>47321169
you can make your own deck and do well at a certain level.
however i suspect that pretty much every deck worth playing has been explored to some extent so i doubt you can find something truly original.
>>
>>47321169

You can build your own deck once you are familiar with the modern meta(both local, online and regional competitive metas) and then you'll know exactly what to prepare your deck for. Sometimes new cards will come in and give your deck a serious boost and make it something really outstanding.

For example Elves was a fringe playable deck for a while until Collected Company was printed. Dredgevine right now is going the same way with it being a fringe deck to one that got a massive boost with Insolent Neonate and Prized Amalgam.
>>
>>47322161

Seeing as Wizards keeps trying to force draft on this shit, Lin Sivvi doesn't make any sense unless there are a ton of rebel commons.
>>
>>47322110

Should I attack with my Colonnade?

Should I bolt the Snappy or Nahiri or my opponent?

Should I use my Lighthouse EOT, or will that open up an opportunity for my opponent that I can't afford?

I suppose the decision trees narrowed later on, but turns 3-6 were interesting.

Fuck i'm so clever I even splash Red and play Melira in the sideboard in Infect. They think they're safe on taking all that shock damage from their lands leaving them on 12 life and then BAM! In comes Melira and I swing in pumping up to 6 and then slap down that Temur Battle Rage.

The current go-to 4 drop for Jund is Kalitas. It gains life, turns your 1-for-1 removal into 2-for-1's, and hoses the Viscera Seer-Melira-Kitchen Finks combo.

There's a joke that Modern has the most cancerous playerbase. Some people don't think it's a joke, but it might just be /tg/.

The reason why Jund is using Pia and Kiran Nalaar is due to the fact that since the Thopter tokens are colorless artifact creatures. It allows them to block an Inkmoth Nexus or an Etched Champion. Those two factors alone are they get played.

alright boys its my patented jeskaisochron

it plays sort of like jeskai burn but also turbofog and uses isochrons to fuck shit up

mainboard originally had holy days and was deep into anti-creature but ive been trying to diversify the list for noncreature based builds like tron and have as many options as possible

4x Angel's Grace
1x Elixir of Immortality
2x Lightning Bolt
3x Path to Exile
4x Boros Charm
4x Dawn Charm
4x Howling Mine
4x Isochron Scepter
3x Izzet Charm
3x Lightning Helix
1x Blood Moon
4x Dictate of Kruphix
1x Runeflare Trap

Sideboard:

Sideboard is currently in progress but I basically need answers to noncreature permanents so i run silences because its basically gg if i get it on isochron vs tron but I need to hope they don't get karn before then.

4x Delay
2x Blood Moon
1x Smash to Smithereens
2x Disenchant
1x Path to Exile
4x Silence

fun deck! makes games take for fucking ever though

land are just basic fetch/shocks leaning towards more island/plains basics for blood moon

lemme know if its shit but it feels good

>singles
Any store still cracking any more than two boxes for singles sales right now are losing money. They're losing money on the two boxes already but there is no way that they can possibly compete with the online stores and nobody buys singles at any store ever.

The labor it takes to crack and sort singles is also lost. A store can buy singles at 50% and sell for the full market value but actually opening product is like $500-$1000 of product and labor you are never going to recuperate.

My store stopped cracking more than 3 boxes in RTR. They still buy collections and singles and sell them; so there's always cards for sale that competitive players want and for the dogshit cards the community basically gives them away.

I know stores in large cities can maintain Magic sales because they enjoy the combined benefit of cheap rent and a large Magic player base but I'm surprised anywhere else bothers with supporting Magic anymore beyond sealed sales and prereleases; every event including FNM is run at a loss after you take into account labor in addition to the fact nobody wants to work a fucking 12 hour day on Friday or wants to pay overtime.

Really?

It's kinda died off here. There was a huge surge yes, but once all the bookstores and the Walmarts started getting Settlers of Catan it was pretty much done. For the past decade people raved about Catan about how everyone in Silicon Valley played it but the fairweather players got into the fad and now they're done. It was amusing getting everyone together to play board games but most people just don't have the stomach for it to go longer than a couple months - it's actually like going to the gym; it's actually more fun for some people to sit together and watch TV or a movie like they always do.

My store sells tonnes of games during Christmas but keeps a fairly low inventory during the rest of the year, and I know that nobody is actually board gaming; they're just collecting games with nobody to play with, which is a very sad reality. As far as board games goes it sells more Catan, Ticket to Ride, and *insert property* Monopoly more than anything.

I can list the only games that really sell right here:
Carcasonne
Catan
Smallworld
Ticket to Ride
Monopoly
Risk
Munchkin

It may sound demeaning but people just don't want to put any effort into anything. You'd think the Game of Thrones board game would sell like fucking crazy right? The store owner tells me that the moment people say, "Oh my god Game of Thrones board game", pick up the box and look at the back they put it right back down. It's a solid game but even the appeal of the show can't sell the fact that it looks too hardcore for people.

>>
>>47331562

No. You absolutely need Cranial Plating, being able to change equip targets at instant speed is one of its key strengths. If you're doing a budget Affinity list then you should look to some Frogmites and Myr Enforcers.
>>
>>47331713
This. Cranial Plating steals games. You draw the third one in the top 15 cards and your opponent rolls their eyes while they die.
>>
>>47331713
i am wanting to take out myr enforcer for sigil of valor/arcbound worker

hows chief of the foundry?
>>
>>47331764

Sigil of Valor is terrible. Again you want Cranial Plating so you can swing with everything and then reattach to whatever isn't being blocked. Sigil they can always either chump block the one dude that has it.

Arcbound Worker is actually fine though, it's really good if you have Ravager in your list but if you're lacking the Ravager then it's still ok.

Never tried Chief of the Foundry but I guess it's alright. 3 cmc can be a bit hefty though but not entirely uncastable. Give it a shot anyway.

>>

>>
>>47332105
Lantern only takes forever to play against if you're an idiot who doesn't understand what you're playing against.

Even a rookie pilot of the deck has no excuse to time out besides actively jacking off under the table, which Lantern players are prone to doing.

youre gonna get assraped because youre not doing anything to develop your board until turn 4 or 5. 4 counterspells and 4 kill spells is not enough to handle your way until then. if you wanna do reanimator the right way in modern then play dredgevine. if you dont want to or cant then you are very likely to not win anything but you can try fitting in nyxweaver spiders and a couple of whips of erebos.

Ad Nauseam with 4x mainboard Leyline of Sanctity, Tron has no relevant interaction beyond Karn/Ulamog eating lands, which usually won't happen until turn 4 (when you're set to Pact their threat and go off on upkeep), Jund can't beat you without discard or Lili (which is slow enough that you need to draw like shit at the same time), 8rack nor Burn can beat Leyline if you also land a Phyrexian Unlife vs Pack Rat/Guide beatdowns. If you play 1 Lighting Storm and 1 Laboratory Maniac you can beat Coco's infinite life, only bad MU of the bunch is Infect which gets better after sideboarding 1-2 Slaughter Pacts (which can be found with Tolaria West) and 4 Darkness (requires a Spell Pierce if they try to go balls deep).

>>
>>47335418
It's not that it's a bad deck, it's just that a lot of Magic players are too afraid to branch out and bring non-meta decks to tournaments because for some reason a lot of players care more about their win/loss ratio and their image rather than just enjoying the game.
>>
>>47313772
Been testing a esper tokens brew for a while. Does quite well versus jund, abzan coco, and infect. burn and control decks give it a hard time. Turn 4 emrakuls happen quite frequently.
>>
>>47334875
It's the latter.
>>
>>47335418
My guess is that Grixis control doesnt have great win conditions, like the new Nahiri control deck, so it has a hard time closing out the game even if it does stabilize the board.

Grixis delver can deal damage better, but it's a strategy that doesnt work well against a creature heavy meta, one where your opponents can land something bigger. It's a deck that works best against control and combo because you can race and disrupt them better than an aggro deck.

... So it actually does nothing while in play?

If you play affinity why are you building elves? They're essentially the same except elves are worse

Put it in graveyard, when any of your shit dies, you get a 2/2 zombie.

Exile it when your opponent sends a creature to the graveyard.

Gitaxian probes to replace dispel

I don't personally like 8 doublestrike effects since they don't stack. I think 6-7 is better, much like how you don't want a full playset of Tasigurs despite him being the best card in hand.

Cool options:

Appostals blessing
Gutshot
Distortion strike
Unstable mutation (slight nonbo with blistercoil)
Twisted image (nonbo with titans strength)
Fatal Frenzy (1 more mana than temur, but it can stack)

That's why it's only played in decks that realistically can't ever cast it.
>>
>>47335923
you play it in legacy decks where the strategy is to force yourself to discard or mill cards from your library and use cards like narcomoeba, ichorid, nether shadow, dread return, cabal therapy, bridge from below and flame-kin zealot to annex the sudetenland.

Snaps are on sale.

So with Infernal Tutor in Lantern Control mb I figured I might as well play more 1-ofs in the sideboard since I effectively get 2 copies of each, thoughts?

3 Sun Droplet
2 Welding Jar
2 Nature's Claim
1 Extirpate
1 Melira, Sylvok Outcast
1 Grafdigger's Cage
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Sudden Shock
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Warping Wail
1 Pyroclasm (another one in the mainboard along with 1 Pyrite Spellbomb and 2 Abrupt Decays vs problematic creatures)

Two more in my binder. I am selling the shit out of these. She is near max for her price.
>>
>>47337925
Will she go back down or has she hit karn/ugin status?
>>
>>47337973

Karn/Ugin status. The hype is already dying a bit because Grafdigger's Cage is a silver bullet for her ultimate and the decks that play her can't really afford to play artifact hate. I would not be surprised if she ended up a sideboard card in Jeskai.
>>
>>47338008

I mean she will forever be $25-30. But she is not going up anymore than that-- as far as Karn/Ugin status.
>>
>>47338017
Oh okay. Kind of want to play her but i dont have anything atm that she could fit in. Nothing good anyway.
